Chapter 1: THE WOMAN WHO BELONGED TO GOD
The bells of Saint Raphael Catholic Church rang every morning at six.
For the people of the town, the church was a place of peace, forgiveness, and salvation. Families came there to pray. Children attended catechism classes, and troubled people sought comfort from the priests who served behind its sacred walls.
Among the church's most devoted servants was Sister Mary.
Mary was a young African reverend sister who had dedicated her life to God. She was gentle, disciplined, and deeply committed to her faith. While other young women dreamed of marriage and romantic love, Mary believed she had found her purpose in serving the Lord.
Every morning, she knelt before the altar with her rosary between her fingers.
"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus."
She prayed for the sick, the poor, the lonely, and even those who hated her.
She trusted the priests who worked beside her. She believed they were men of God, chosen to protect the vulnerable and guide lost souls.
What Mary did not know was that some of those men had hidden their corruption behind their collars.
And the woman they secretly desired to destroy was the very woman who trusted them most.
