Chapter One - Yuma Shadow
The heat never really leaves Yuma. Even at night, it hangs in the air like a warning. The kind of heat that remembers everything you've ever done.
Craig Smith stepped out of the old bus station with nothing but a duffel bag and a silence he'd carried for years. The streetlights buzzed. The pavement shimmered. And somewhere in the distance, a train horn cut through the dark like a blade.
He wasn't supposed to come back.
But the desert has a way of calling its own home - especially the ones who tried to outrun it.
Across the street, the Territorial Prison sat like a fossilized beast, its stone walls glowing faintly under the moon. Craig felt its stare. He felt the weight of every story buried inside it. And he felt something else too... something watching him from the edges of the night.
A shadow moved.
Not fast. Not slow. Just enough to let him know it was there.
Craig froze. The air thickened. The street went quiet, like the whole city was holding its breath.
Then the shadow stepped back into the dark and vanished.
Craig swallowed hard.
"Not tonight," he muttered.
But the desert didn't care what he wanted.
He walked toward the motel - the same one he stayed in as a kid when things at home got bad. The neon sign flickered like it was trying to warn him. The clerk didn't look up. The key was cold in his hand.
Inside the room, Craig dropped the duffel and sat on the edge of the bed. The hum of the AC unit filled the silence. He stared at the door, waiting for the feeling to fade.
It didn't.
Because the shadow wasn't just following him.
It was remembering him.
And somewhere out there, in the heat-soaked dark of Yuma, something whispered his name.
