Chapter 1: The Coal-Pit Runesmith and the Anvil Rejection
FREYA
"Keep your calloused thumbs hidden behind my cape, Freya, and don't let a speck of coal-dust drift onto my hem," my twenty-two-year-old cousin Maris Lind hissed over her gilded shoulder, rapping her pearl-handled tongs against my heavy iron wrist-cuffs. "See this golden sun-weave forging corset I am wearing for the Master Forge-Trial today? My father had the armorers refit it from your late mother's ceremonial vest. On a runeless, wolf-less coal-drudge like you, gold thread would be a joke, whereas on me, it announces the next Luna of the Iron-Peak Pack."
I stood two steps below the central Master Anvil Platform inside the cavernous Great Foundry of Iron-Peak Keep, keeping my spine straight and my soot-streaked leather sleeves pulled down over the ten-pound Slag-Lead Suppression Shackles bolted around my forearms.
Around the tiered stone galleries of the volcanic arena, four hundred Eastern and Midlands forge-elders, pack warriors, and guild envoys raised hammered-bronze tankards beneath the fiery amber glow of the Eclipse Sun shining through the high roof-vents.
To every laughing smith in those galleries, I was twenty-three-year-old Freya Lind—the quiet, "runeless" orphan daughter of the late Master Haldor Lind, a girl whose wolf and ancestral smith-runes had supposedly failed to wake at her eighteenth birthday and who was only kept around to shovel anthracite clinkers in the subterranean coal-pits.
Not a single person in the arena suspected that the twelve seven-inch silver pins holding up my waist-length copper-red braids were actually balanced Star-Iron Runic Throwing Chisels capable of splitting a two-inch iron breastplate from forty paces.
And nobody—least of all Maris—knew that while she preened in my mother's altered sun-weave corset, my right boot was resting lightly against the master resonance pedal of the subterranean bellows-flue, silently monitoring the five-hundred-gallon overhead quench-tank bubbling twenty feet above her powdered curls.
💬 COMMENT BAIT: Maris is wearing Freya's dead mother's stolen gold forging corset while rapping tongs against Freya's lead shackles! 🔨🤬 How badly does Maris need that stolen corset melted right off her back?!
"The sun-weave suits your ambition, Maris," I replied in the calm, measured cadence I had honed during five winters locked beside the white-hot blast furnaces beneath my uncle's foundry. "Though my mother always wrote in her ledger that sun-weave basted with cheap tin-solder pops every single seam the instant it touches boiling coal-flux or pig-tallow grease."
Maris's painted mouth twisted into a sneer. "Save your coal-pit fables for the rats downstairs, little cinder-mouse. Once Thane rejects you on the anvil today, you won't even have a straw pallet behind the ash-bins."
She sashayed up the granite steps onto the Master Anvil Platform, where her fifty-six-year-old father—my uncle, Forge-Master Garret Lind—stood puffing out his bronze-plated stomach beside a velvet-lined weapon rack.
Resting on that rack gleamed six magnificent greatswords forged from living, golden-white star-metal that hummed like a choir of bells—The Sun-Steel War-Blades.
For the past three winters, those six monthly blades had made the minor Iron-Peak Pack the richest forge-territory in the Eastern Mountains. Every thirty days, an armored vanguard from the feared Shadow-Forge Citadel (Seat #2 of the Eclipse Conclave) rode down from the volcanic peaks to pay Uncle Garret twenty thousand gold sovereign crowns per shipment—six hundred thousand gold crowns in total—because Sun-Steel War-Blades were the only weapons on Earth capable of sealing the Eastern Abyssal Shadow-Rift and halting the lethal Shadow-Slag Heart-Burn curse.
Uncle Garret and Maris had sworn to the entire realm that Maris was a rare "Sun-Blessed Runesmith" who hammered and runed every Sun-Steel War-Blade with her own delicate hands.
In reality, Maris couldn't sharpen a butter-knife without chipping the whetstone.
Every single inch of those one hundred and eight Sun-Steel War-Blades had been folded, hammered, and runed by me at two in the morning inside the locked subterranean coal-pit—quenched with three drops of my own royal golden-bronze blood drawn from my blistered palms.
For one thousand and ninety-five scorching midnights, while Maris slept upstairs in silk sheets and my fiancé Alpha-Heir Thane Ironwood drank spiced ale in the tavern, I had swung a forty-pound star-iron sledgehammer over the subterranean heart-anvil.
At first, I had forged those blades because Uncle Garret threatened to melt down my late father's master tools and burn his runic blueprints if I didn't produce weapons he could sell to Seat #2.
By the second winter, however, something extraordinary had begun happening whenever I quenched the sixth blade of each monthly crate.
Every time I plunged the white-hot star-steel into the blood-infused quench-trough, a fierce, answering pulse of volcanic heat—smelling of smoked mountain hickory, volcanic thunderstorm, and dark spiced rum—would vibrate back up the steel tang into my calloused palms, as though the unknown Immortal Alpha-King wielding my blades two hundred miles away in the Shadow-Forge Citadel was wrapping his hand around mine.
I had etched tiny, hidden runic balance-notes inside the fuller beneath each hilt-guard where Uncle Garret never looked—adjusting the pommel counterweight by half an ounce to protect the wielder's left shoulder, and carving a microscopic sun-spark rune into the grip to ease the chest-spasms of the Shadow-Slag curse.
"Silence in the Great Foundry!" bellowed the voice of my betrothed, twenty-six-year-old Alpha-Heir Thane Ironwood.
Thane swaggered onto the center of the Master Anvil Platform wearing a garish suit of gilded parade-plate that clanked like a sack of tin pots. With his greased sandy hair, watery blue eyes, and heavy iron gauntlets that had never seen a real battlefield, Thane had spent the last four years sneaking down to the coal-chute after dark to beg me to repair his dented tournament shields while swearing he would break my lead cuffs and name me his Luna on my twenty-third birthday.
Today, however, Thane didn't reach for the key to my cuffs.
Instead, he hooked his thick arm around Maris's waist in front of all four hundred spectators and sneered down at me from behind the Master Anvil.
"Today marks the Annual Master Forge-Trial of Iron-Peak!" Thane shouted, puffing out his chest before the visiting guild envoys. "Five winters back, a childhood betrothal pact bound my house to Master Haldor's daughter, Freya. Through five long years, I waited to see whether a wolf or a single smith-rune would ever stir inside her barren, defective veins! Instead, she stayed a useless, runeless coal-pit drudge while her younger cousin Maris blossomed into the Sun-Blessed Master Runesmith whose Sun-Steel War-Blades have earned us six hundred thousand gold crowns from the Shadow-Forge Citadel!"
Cruel laughter echoed around the stone tiers of the arena.
Thane pointed a gauntleted finger straight at the circular rejection rune carved into the base of the Master Anvil.
"Step onto the Anvil Stone, Freya Lind!" Thane barked. "Before the Forge-Elders of Iron-Peak, I, Alpha-Heir Thane Ironwood, formally reject you as my fated mate, dissolve our betrothal contract, and claim your cousin Maris Lind as my true Master Runesmith Luna!"
💬 COMMENT BAIT: Thane spent four years begging Freya in secret to fix his dented shields and now he's rejecting her on the Master Anvil to marry her fraud cousin! 🗑️🔨 Who can't wait to watch Cassian's war-hammer meet Thane's kneecap?!
He expected me to crumple onto the soot-stained flagstones, sobbing and begging him not to cast me aside.
Instead, as the archaic rejection rune sparked beneath my scarred leather boots, I felt nothing but a glorious, volcanic wave of liberation—as if an iron vise that had been crushing my lungs since I was eighteen had just snapped in two!
Deep beneath my ribs—and all along my forearms beneath the ten-pound Slag-Lead Suppression Shackles—something colossal, ancient, and blazing like a noon sun suddenly roared awake, opening a pair of molten bronze-amber eyes inside my soul.
Let the tin rooster clank his hollow armor, daughter of the Sun-Hammer, a regal, fiery female voice sang inside my mind—the voice of Solara, my Mythic Twelve-Foot Golden-Bronze Sun-Wolf. Because the true Sovereign of the Shadow-Forge just crossed the outer bridge—and his wolf has been hunting the maker of his blades for three winters.
My pulse struck a steady, iron beat beneath my sternum as I raised my chin, fixing my molten bronze-amber eyes squarely on Thane's sneering face without shedding a single tear.
"I, Freya Lind," I said, my voice ringing clear, steady, and unbroken across the hushed foundry arena, "accept your rejection with sincere relief, Thane Ironwood. May your future as Alpha have considerably better temper than the cheap pig-iron in your breastplate."
Thane's jaw dropped, an ugly crimson flush creeping up his thick neck at my refusal to cower.
"You insolent coal-rat!" Uncle Garret roared, purple veins throbbing in his temples as he snatched a red-hot iron Apprentice-Branding Rod out of the ceremonial coal-brazier beside the anvil! "How dare you insult your new Luna and the future Alpha on their betrothal day! Before we lock you permanently in the lower slag-vault to pump the bellows under Maris's whip for the rest of your life, Thane is going to brand the mark of a Bound Indenture-Servant onto your right wrist and take your father's bronze anvil-pendant!"
Thane snatched the glowing red-hot branding iron from Uncle Garret's hand, marched down the two anvil steps, and clamped his greasy left gauntlet around my shackled wrist, raising the sizzling iron brand two inches from my skin.
"On your knees, runeless trash," Thane snarled, "before I burn the skin right off your—"
Thane never got the rest of his threat out.
Across the vast hall of the Great Foundry, the twenty-foot reinforced iron-and-oak blast gates did not simply swing wide.
They blew clean off their hinges in an earth-shaking detonation of bronze-and-violet volcanic lightning, hurtling forty feet down the center aisle and silencing every breath in Iron-Peak Keep!
💬 COMMENT BAIT: Right as Thane raised a red-hot branding iron to Freya's wrist, the 20-foot iron forge gates just blew forty feet down the aisle in a blast of bronze-and-violet lightning! ⚡🔨🐺 Drop a 🔥👑 for Alpha-King Cassian Vane's entrance in Chapter 2!
