Chapter 1: The Flooded Sub-Basement Vault
RORY
"Your disgraced name belongs at the bottom of the Chicago River bed, Rory!" my treacherous ex-fiancé Braxton Lowe sneered through the brass intercom grill behind the two-inch-thick sub-basement blast glass, twisting the red drainage lockout wheel while frigid grey river seepage sloshed around the ankles of my scarred steel-toe work boots. "Once Alderman Cross stamps Kendall's signature onto your hundred-and-ten-story seismic-caisson blueprints upstairs, Cavanaugh Structural collects the forty-five-million-dollar completion bonus—and you stay locked in this hydro-cell until the concrete trucks seal the shaft!"
Beside him on the dry, heated observation catwalk three hundred feet beneath downtown Chicago, my vain stepsister Kendall Cavanaugh adjusted a decorative white designer hard-hat studded with faux pearls over her platinum blowout and blew a kiss at the glass.
"Honestly, Rory, you should thank me for putting my name on your little foundation drawings," Kendall trilled, waving the gold-embossed tube containing my six months of hand-calculated deep-bedrock shear diagrams while my greedy stepbrother Declan poured himself a glass of thirty-year-old scotch from my late father's crystal decanter. "Imagine what the Chicago Architectural Commission would say if they knew a disgraced twenty-three-year-old basement ghost drew the load-bearing caissons for the Gallagher Sovereign Tower! Nobody wants an architect with soot under her fingernails and calluses on her knuckles at a black-tie gala."
"And don't bother tapping on the reinforced glass with your little brass plumb-bob, baby sister," Declan chuckled nastily, leaning his soft, pinstripe-suited belly against the brass railing while Alderman Garrett Cross—the corrupt Chairman of the Chicago Zoning and Engineering Commission—checked his gold pocket watch in the shadows behind them. "The sub-vault air vents are already throttled down to twenty percent. Just sign the irrevocable patent waiver on the waterproof clipboard in front of you, or Braxton opens the auxiliary river intake valve and turns your drafting table into an aquarium."
I didn't touch the forged patent waiver sitting on my rusted steel drafting table.
For over a thousand nights since they had confiscated my late father's master drafting seal and bricked up the private freight elevator connecting this sub-river testing chamber to the main Cavanaugh Structural tower, they had treated me like a human calculator they could starve into submission. Every time a billionaire developer or municipal board demanded an impossible deep-earth foundation solution in the shifting clay of the Chicago Loop, Declan and Braxton shoved the geological bedrock samples down my dumbwaiter chute at midnight, threatened to bulldoze my mother's rose garden at our foreclosed Lake Forest cottage if I missed their deadline, and then paraded across stages in custom tuxedos while claiming my hand-drawn structural calculations as Kendall's visionary work.
Instead, standing knee-deep in forty-degree Lake Michigan seepage inside the subterranean hydro-drafting cell where my stepfamily had imprisoned me for three brutal Chicago winters after my father Padraig Cavanaugh's suspicious fatal fall from a scaffolding hoist, I kept my calloused fingers steady on the vernier dial of my modified green structural laser-transit.
Across my collarbone, tucked beneath my oil-stained charcoal thermal henley, the heavy octagonal pendant my late mother Siobhan had pressed into my palm on her deathbed—Crimson Signet #3: The Emerald Plumb-Line Compass, a twelve-carat Colombian blood-emerald suspended inside a black-platinum draftsman's compass ring—began to thrum with a fierce, rhythmic heat against my skin.
Sixty-two hertz.
My eyes narrowed behind my fogged safety glasses as the green laser beam from my transit reflected off the weeping limestone bedrock wall of Primary Caisson Number One.
The micro-vibrations rippling up through the soles of my boots weren't natural Chicago Riverbed settling.
Someone had bolted a ring of military-grade harmonic resonance charges directly onto the seventy-foot steel-and-concrete bedrock pilings supporting the hundred-and-ten-story Gallagher Sovereign Tower above our heads—and the frequency was tuned to shake the entire skyscraper into the river the moment the upper sky-bridge counterweights were locked into place!
"You didn't just steal my blueprints, Declan," I said, my voice slicing through the intercom speakers like a diamond-tipped masonry saw as I locked the blood-emerald plumb-line compass into the optical housing of my green structural laser-transit. "You and Alderman Cross let someone wire harmonic demolition charges onto Caissons One through Four! And Kendall—you mounted my tuned-mass damper schematic upside down in that blueprint tube! If the crane crew upstairs drops the eight-hundred-ton sky-bridge girder onto the east trunnion right now, the harmonic feedback will shear the bedrock pilings in four minutes flat!"
Behind the bulletproof glass, Alderman Garrett Cross's pale, hawkish face stiffened for a fraction of a second before he stepped up to the microphone, the silver lapel pin of a black ledger and crossed quills glinting on his tuxedo jacket.
"What a tragic hallucination brought on by sub-basement hypoxia," Alderman Cross said smoothly, his cold grey eyes betraying the calculated malice of an operative working for the shadowy financial cabal my father had once whispered about in terror—the Black-Ledger Directorate. "When the east trunnion shears in four minutes, Miss Cavanaugh, the entire world will mourn the catastrophic failure of Kieran Gallagher's flagship skyscraper. And when the federal investigators pull your drowned body out of this flooded hydro-cell beside a set of sabotaged stress tables, your stepbrother's fifty-million-dollar insurance policy will pay out in full. Open the river intake valve, Mr. Lowe."
"With pleasure, Alderman," Braxton sneered, grabbing the cast-iron wheel of the main floodgate manifold with both hands and wrenching it counter-clockwise.
CLANG-HISSSSS!
A six-inch pressurized jet of freezing, silt-black Chicago River water erupted from the lower bulkhead grate, slamming into my shins and sending a foaming wave crashing across the concrete floor!
Within five seconds, the icy water rushed from my calves to my thighs, threatening to sweep my tripod and waterproof blueprint cylinders into the sump trench.
"Bye-bye, little basement mole!" Kendall giggled, snapping a selfie in front of the glass as I braced my back against the vibrating limestone caisson and hoisted my green laser-transit onto the high steel drafting table. "Braxton and I will make sure to drink a flute of Dom Pérignon to your memory at the Sovereign Penthouse reception tonight!"
BOOM-CRAAAACK!
Before Kendall could tap her phone screen a second time, a deafening hydraulic percussion blast shook the entire reinforced concrete corridor behind the observation catwalk!
The steel fire-door at the top of the catwalk stairs didn't just open.
It tore clean off its three-inch hardened hinges in a shower of sheared titanium bolts and swirling white steam, flying twenty feet across the catwalk and smashing Declan's crystal scotch decanter to powder!
"What the hell—?!" Braxton shrieked, stumbling backward into Kendall's pearl-studded hard-hat as the heavy tread of custom-forged combat dress boots echoed down the concrete steps like approaching artillery.
Out of the drifting cloud of hydraulic mist strode six-foot-six of lethal, scarred Irish-American underworld royalty.
Kieran Gallagher.
Supreme Warlord of the Gallagher Sovereign Infrastructure Syndicate, ruler of three hundred and ten billion dollars in armored skyscrapers, transatlantic shipping tunnels, and deep-bedrock defense vaults between Chicago and Dublin—and Seat #3 of The Crimson Crown Syndicate.
Even with his bespoke charcoal-wool trench coat billowing open over a rain-soaked white dress shirt that clung to the massive, granite-cut slabs of his chest and shoulders, Kieran Gallagher looked like he had been forged in the same blast furnace as the structural steel above us. A jagged silver shrapnel scar cut through the outer edge of his dark left eyebrow down his razor-sharp cheekbone, his storm-grey eyes blazed like molten tungsten, and bolted visibly beneath the torn left ribs of his soaked dress shirt was a pulsing, micro-fractured black-platinum and tungsten thoracic cage—the infamous Red-Tide Seismic Resonance Brace that was ticking with an ominous red digital telemetry readout at 86.4% PLEURAL COMPRESSION.
And trotting right beside his left knee—wearing a custom titanium-riveted black leather tactical harness with a miniature yellow carbon-fiber construction hard-hat clipped proudly above his massive mahogany-and-iron-grey head—was Rivets, Kieran's legendary hundred-and-fifty-pound Irish Wolfhound-Rottweiler mix!
Rivets let out a bass-drum WOOF that rattled the fluorescent light cages, bared a set of gleaming white fangs at Braxton's trembling knees, and immediately locked his soulful amber eyes on me behind the flooded blast glass.
The air through the breached vent shaft flooded my lungs with Kieran Gallagher's unmistakable, intoxicating scent—smoked Irish peat whiskey, rain-wet structural steel, and warm cedarwood blueprint paper.
"Lord Gallagher!" Alderman Cross gasped, his suave composure cracking as two of Kieran's six-foot-four Dublin tactical engineers sealed the corridor exits with submachine guns slung across their chests. "We—we were just attempting to contain a rogue junior draftsman who locked herself inside the hydro-vault and tampered with the primary caisson stress gauges!"
"She's crazy, Mr. Gallagher!" Kendall squeaked, shoving Declan out of the way to bat her eyelashes at Kieran while clutching my stolen blueprint tube to her chest. "I'm Kendall Cavanaugh, the lead architect who designed your sky-bridge! My unstable stepsister Rory broke into the sub-basement to sabotage my calculations!"
Kieran didn't even glance at Kendall's fake-pearl hard-hat.
As a sharp harmonic tremor shuddered through Primary Caisson Number One, Kieran's big left hand clamped briefly over the ticking black-platinum resonance bar bolted across his left ribs. A muscle feathered along his scarred jaw as the telemetry diode on his chest flashed 86.8%—harmonically slaved to the exact sixty-two-hertz demolition charge vibrating through the bedrock beneath my boots.
His molten tungsten-grey eyes swept past the four cowering liars on the catwalk and locked straight onto me standing waist-deep in the churning river floodwater behind the two-inch glass.
Instead of screaming for help or dropping my equipment, I slammed the blood-emerald plumb-line compass of Crimson Signet #3 into the prism mount of my green structural laser-transit, spun the micrometer barrel with one steady hand, and aimed the coherent emerald-green laser beam straight through the reinforced glass at the center of Kieran Gallagher's ticking rib-brace!
"You have sixty seconds to look at my true foundation blueprints, Mr. Gallagher," I called out over the roar of the flooding intake valve, my smoky voice ringing clear through the sub-basement speakers as the twelve-carat Colombian blood-emerald inside my compass blazed like a supernova against his chest, "before your corrupt zoning commissioner and my idiot stepbrother send all one hundred and ten floors of iron plunging into the river channel—and nobody else in Illinois can reset that Red-Tide rib-frame without collapsing your left lung!"
