Chapter 1: The Shinjuku Clockwork Bunker
TALIA
"Your scarred fingers are only good for oiling rusty clock gears in the cellar, Talia!" my spineless ex-fiancé Preston Vance jeered through the brass speaker grill behind the three-inch ballistic sapphire-glass window of the subterranean horology bunker, twisting the titanium deadbolt wheel while the automated degreasing-solvent vents hissed above my head. "Once my uncle Nigel stamps Bianca's signature onto your thirty-million-dollar quantum tourbillon chronometer upstairs, Sterling-Vane Horology wins the exclusive Shinkansen defense contract—and you stay locked in this sub-vault until the midnight solvent purge scrubs your workbench clean!"
Beside him on the heated red-carpeted observation gallery two hundred feet beneath the neon-lit rain of Tokyo's Shinjuku district, my vain half-sister Bianca Sterling adjusted a diamond-encrusted decorative watch-gear hairpin in her bleached curls and held up the velvet presentation cushion containing six months of my sleepless, microscopic labor.
"Honestly, Talia, you should be flattered that I'm letting the Tokyo Imperial Horology Guild think I built this movement," Bianca purred, admiring her reflection in the bunker glass while wearing the backless crimson silk couture gown she had forced me to hand-hem for her thirty minutes ago—leaving me standing in a torn, oil-stained leather watchmaker's apron over a threadbare crimson silk slip. "Imagine if the press found out a disgraced twenty-two-year-old cellar ghost with calluses on her thumbs and watch-oil on her chin actually engineered the Kurosawa Sovereign Chronometer! Nobody wants a reclusive little gear-rat at a billionaire's gala."
"And don't bother reaching for the emergency intercom button, niece," my corrupt step-uncle Nigel Vane said coldly, stepping out of the shadows behind Bianca and Preston while adjusting the black-ledger and crossed-quills lapel pin on his Savile Row dinner jacket. "In ninety seconds, the quantum electromagnetic pulse resonator I planted inside the base of that presentation cushion will sync with the master atomic clock of Zander Kurosawa's Shinjuku Sovereign Cyber-Tower. When it fires, every Shinkansen bullet train in Japan will lock down on the tracks, Kurosawa's defective heart will stop beating on the auction floor—and federal investigators will trace the sabotage straight back to the disgraced daughter of Arthur Sterling lying unconscious in this solvent-filled vault."
I didn't waste a single breath begging the three cowards behind the glass.
For over a thousand nights since my brilliant father Arthur Sterling had collapsed dead over his watchmaking lathe in London three winters ago—and Nigel, Bianca, and Preston had confiscated my British passport after dragging me to their Tokyo subterranean restoration vault—they had treated me like a human precision machine they could starve and lock in the dark. Every time a royal collector or defense conglomerate demanded a microscopic three-axis mechanical tourbillon capable of operating inside high-magnetic environments where digital silicon chips fried instantly, Nigel shoved the raw titanium blanks down my dumbwaiter chute at midnight, threatened to melt down my late mother Celine's antique Geneva horology tools if I missed his deadline, and then paraded Bianca across international auction stages as the "Empress of Time."
Instead, standing barefoot on the cold slate floor of the subterranean clockwork bunker while caustic trichloroethylene solvent fumes began to curl from the ceiling grates, I kept my calloused right thumb steady on the micrometer vernier of my custom-built High-Frequency Ruby Micro-Laser Caliper.
And resting against the hollow of my throat—tucked safely beneath the leather bib of my watchmaker's apron where Bianca had been too lazy to search—hung the priceless heirloom my late mother Celine Sterling had locked onto a braided black-platinum chain the night before she died:
Crimson Signet #4: The Ruby Perpetual Tourbillon.
Carved around a flawless fourteen-carat Burmese pigeon-blood ruby balance wheel spinning perpetually inside three concentric cages of black platinum at twenty-eight thousand eight hundred beats per hour, my mother's relic suddenly flared with a scorching, rhythmic heat against my skin!
Three-point-two gigahertz.
Through my ten-power binocular watchmaker's loupe, I saw the hair-thin rubidium balance spring inside my mother's tourbillon begin to oscillate in violent sympathy with a sub-atomic carrier wave radiating up through the granite floor from the Shinjuku Shinkansen tunnel below us!
"You didn't just plant an electromagnetic disruptor to embarrass Zander Kurosawa at tonight's auction, Uncle Nigel!" I called out, my crystal-clear voice slicing through the bunker audio pickup as I unclasped Crimson Signet #4 from my neck and locked its fourteen-carat Burmese ruby tourbillon cage directly into the optical collimator of my micro-laser caliper. "You and your Black-Ledger Directorate masters tuned that quantum pulse to eighty-seven-point-two percent harmonic drift—the exact resonant frequency of the 1996 Venetian bio-pacemaker coil wired to Zander Kurosawa's sinoatrial heart node! And Bianca—because you dropped my presentation chronometer when you were taking selfies in the elevator, you bent the upper tourbillon bridge by four microns! If that quantum pulse fires while the bridge is bent, the back-feed will detonate the transformer bank right underneath your observation gallery in two minutes flat!"
Behind the three-inch sapphire glass, Preston Vance's tanned face went chalk-white as he looked down at the velvet cushion in Bianca's hands. "Wait—Bianca, did you drop the movement in the elevator?!"
"I barely tapped it against my champagne glass!" Bianca snapped, before glaring at me through the glass. "Don't listen to her, Preston! She's just trying to trick us into opening the blast door! Flood the bunker with degreasing solvent now!"
"Open the main solvent manifold, Mr. Vance," Nigel Vane commanded coldly, checking his platinum pocket watch. "Lord Kurosawa's security detail is still three floors above us, and in seventy seconds his heart will cease to function."
Preston grabbed the red cast-iron valve wheel marked ULTRASONIC SOLVENT & OIL-SLUDGE FLUSH and wrenched it open!
HISSSSSS-CLANK!
A choking white mist of industrial watch-degreasing vapor and black graphite oil poured from the lower wall vents, stinging my eyes as the oxygen gauge on the bunker wall dropped toward the red line!
"Sweet dreams, little clock-rat!" Bianca giggled, waving her manicured fingers at the glass. "Preston and I will make sure to buy a yacht in Monaco with your thirty-million-dollar commission!"
ZZZZZZZ-KRAKOOM!
Before Bianca could take a single step toward the gallery stairs, a blinding crescent of white-hot plasma light sliced straight through the six-inch solid titanium security bulkhead at the top of the observation corridor like a hot katana through butter!
Two tons of severed titanium armor plate crashed inward onto the red carpet in a shower of molten silver sparks—and out of the drifting smoke strode six-foot-four of scarred, lethal Japanese-British underworld royalty!
Zander Kurosawa.
Supreme Sovereign of the Kurosawa Cyber-Defense & Shinkansen Bullet-Train Empire, master of three hundred and forty billion dollars in quantum-encrypted satellites, high-speed rail networks, and subterranean Pacific vaults between Tokyo and London—and Fourth Sovereign of The Crimson Crown Syndicate.
Even beneath his tailored midnight-charcoal three-piece suit dusted with silver breach-sparks and his white silk dress shirt ripped open at the throat, Zander Kurosawa looked like a modern shogun forged out of dark steel and ruthless precision. A razor-thin silver blade scar cut along the sculpted angle of his left jawline, his piercing obsidian-amber eyes blazed like twin eclipses beneath slash-dark brows, and visible through the parted linen of his shirt right over his right collarbone and upper sternum was the glowing black-platinum and rubidium housing of his Red-Tide Quantum Bio-Pacemaker Coil—its digital telemetry display flashing a lethal crimson 87.2% CARDIAC ARREST DRIFT.
And pacing right beside his left knee—wearing a custom crimson silk-and-Kevlar tactical harness with a miniature golden pocket-watch compass clipped proudly to his collar—was Ronin, Zander's legendary 110-pound pure-white Japanese Akita Inu!
Ronin let out a deep, lion-like WOOF that shook the sapphire glass, bared two inches of gleaming white fangs at Preston Vance's trembling knees, and immediately locked his intelligent dark eyes onto me inside the gas-filled bunker.
Through the breached ventilation seam above the window, Zander Kurosawa's unmistakable, intoxicating scent cut straight through the solvent mist into my lungs: smoked Hinoki cypress wood, rain-wet Damascus steel, and warm Kyoto matcha-ambergris.
"Lord Kurosawa!" Nigel Vane gasped, stumbling backward against the gallery railing as four of Zander's black-suited Tokyo cyber-guards sealed the corridor with suppressed submachine guns. "Thank heavens you arrived! My mentally unstable niece Talia locked herself inside the restoration bunker and triggered a rogue electromagnetic pulse against your tower!"
"That's right, Lord Zander!" Bianca squealed, pushing Preston aside so she could flutter her lashes at the towering trillionaire while holding up my stolen watch on its velvet cushion. "I'm Bianca Sterling, the master horologist who created your Sovereign Chronometer! Talia tried to sabotage my masterpiece out of jealousy!"
Zander didn't spare Bianca or her diamond hair-clip a single glance.
As a sharp three-point-two-gigahertz pulse from Nigel's hidden resonator rippled across the bunker floor, Zander's right hand clamped briefly over the black-platinum pacemaker coil at his chest. A muscle jumped along his scarred jaw as the telemetry readout spiked from 87.2% to 87.9%—threatening to throw his sinoatrial node into fatal fibrillation within sixty seconds.
His blazing obsidian-amber eyes swept past the three liars on the gallery carpet and locked straight onto me standing barefoot in the swirling mist behind the three-inch sapphire glass.
Instead of coughing or hammering on the window, I braced my elbows on my cast-iron watchmaker's lathe, spun the micrometer barrel of my High-Frequency Ruby Micro-Laser Caliper with one steady thumb, and aimed the coherent crimson laser beam straight through the fourteen-carat Burmese pigeon-blood ruby of Crimson Signet #4—projecting a microscopic targeting reticle dead-center onto the ticking pacemaker coil over Zander Kurosawa's heart!
"Lay a single untrained finger on that master tourbillon escapement, Lord Kurosawa," I warned over the hiss of the solvent vents, my voice ringing crystal-clear through the bunker speakers as the fourteen-carat ruby tourbillon blazed like a crimson star against his chest, "and the Eastern Japan Shinkansen maglev network freezes within a minute and a half—while I am the sole watchmaker alive capable of rewinding the ruby escapement over your pericardium before your pulse flatlines!"
