Chapter 1: The Subterranean Quarantine Stables
CAMILA
"Your calloused fingers are only fit for mucking out quarantine stalls in the cellar, Camila!" my spineless ex-fiancé Hector Morales sneered through the wrought-iron observation grate, sliding the heavy Toledo-steel deadbolt across the subterranean stable door while my vain cousin Marisol Valen and my corrupt step-uncle Don Rodrigo Valen stood gloating behind the pressurized glass partition.
Down in the subterranean limestone quarantine vault beneath the Royal Valen Equestrian Estate outside Seville, the air smelled of surgical iodine, bruised alfalfa hay, and betrayal.
I stood in the center of the pressurized surgical stall in my blood-flecked white veterinary coat and mud-splashed riding breeches, my surgical gloves steady on the ultrasonic tendon-probe I had just used to save a twenty-million-dollar purebred Andalusian dressage stallion from acute laminitis—a surgery that Marisol and Hector were already claiming on the upstairs broadcast monitors that they had performed.
"Open that quarantine blast door right now, Hector!" I called out, my voice echoing off the seventeenth-century Moorish stone arches as I wiped a lock of honey-bronze hair back from my forehead with my forearm. "The ventilation dampers in Sub-Cellar Three are sealed! And whatever synthetic compound Uncle Rodrigo just pumped into the upper dressage stables is leaking down the intake duct into my surgical bay!"
Behind me, standing guard in front of the recovering thoroughbred's stall, were the only two loyal souls left on the entire four-hundred-acre Seville estate:
On my left stood Churro—my ninety-five-pound golden-sable Belgian Malinois-Podenco hound, his black ears pricked like twin daggers above his crimson Kevlar tactical vest and his dark eyes locked with lethal canine hatred on Hector's throat.
And on my right stood Bandido—a forty-five-pound, chest-high miniature spotted Appaloosa-Andalusian stallion with a snow-white mane, black leopard-spotted hindquarters, a custom crimson leather show halter fitted with a miniature golden stirrup bell, and the fearless temperament of a warhorse ten times his size!
Bandido stamped one tiny, polished iron-shod hoof against the limestone cobbles with a sharp CLACK-JINGLE, pinned his spotted ears flat, and bared his teeth at Hector through the glass.
On the other side of the three-inch reinforced observation window, twenty-four-year-old Marisol Valen smoothed the gold-embroidered lapels of my late mother's stolen Royal Andalusian Grand Prix riding jacket—which was pinched so tight across Marisol's padded shoulders that the gold buttons were straining for their lives—and blew a kiss at me.
"Why on earth would we open the blast door, cousin?" Marisol giggled, holding up the gilded Royal Seville Jockey Club Breeder of the Year Trophy that had been engraved using the genetic bloodlines and surgical protocols I had developed down in this cellar for the past three summers. "In ten minutes, Mateo Delucca—the Cartel Sovereign of Andalusia and Buenos Aires himself—is landing his helicopter on our front dressage lawn to inspect his prized black war-stallion El Rey before the Royal Ascot-Seville auction! And when Lord Delucca discovers that someone slipped a lethal dose of Sangre-Negra neuro-toxin into El Rey's oats, who do you think the Royal Stewards are going to blame? The glamorous face of House Valen upstairs... or the disgraced orphan vet locked in the quarantine basement with a vial of toxin in her surgical vent?"
My heart slammed against my ribs as I looked from Marisol's gloating sneer to my fifty-eight-year-old step-uncle Don Rodrigo Valen.
For three long summers since my beloved father Don Carlos Valen had died in a suspicious cliffside riding accident in Ronda—sixteen years after my mother Dr. Elena Valen had vanished in the 1996 Adriatic yacht disaster alongside Mateo Delucca's mother Doña Isabella Delucca—Don Rodrigo had confiscated my passport, frozen my trust fund, and threatened to euthanize every horse in my mother's heritage herd—including little Bandido—if I ever stepped out of this subterranean clinic or revealed that I was the real surgeon and trainer behind every championship ribbon in the trophy hall.
Now, looking at the encrypted black-platinum lapel pin glinting beneath Don Rodrigo's bespoke Seville riding coat, every piece of the puzzle clicked into terrifying focus.
"You didn't just poison Lord Delucca's stallion upstairs to frame me, Uncle Rodrigo," I said coldly, my emerald-gold eyes narrowing as the digital air-quality sensor on my surgical monitor flashed WARNING: SANGRE-NEGRA NEUROMUSCULAR AEROSOL DETECTED IN VENT SHAFT 4. "You're Operative Number Five of Arch-Chancellor Alistair Thorne-Vane's Black-Ledger Directorate! You're using the Royal Seville Equestrian Gala tonight to assassinate Mateo Delucca and hijack Sovereign Vault Sector Five beneath this estate!"
Don Rodrigo's thin silver mustache twitched in a cold, reptilian smile as he checked his gold pocket watch.
"Always too clever for your own survival, just like your mother Elena and your father Carlos," Don Rodrigo murmured into the intercom speaker. "Ten days ago in Buenos Aires, my operatives slipped a slow-acting, four-stage chelated strain of Sangre-Negra into Mateo Delucca's morning yerba mate. Right now, the Cartel Sovereign's neuromuscular paralysis index is already sitting at eighty-four-point-six percent! The moment he steps into the upper stables and inhales the secondary aerosol trigger I just vented into the courtyard, his diaphragm and cardiac plexus will lock into one hundred percent paralysis within sixty seconds—and the ambulance crew in my pocket will wheel his body straight out the service gate while I claim his three-hundred-and-fifty-billion-dollar shipping and thoroughbred empire!"
"And as for you and your little spotted circus pony and mutt, Camila," Hector Morales jeered, reaching for the red PURGE QUARANTINE VENT — MAXIMUM AEROSOL CONCENTRATION switch on the outer wall panel, "once the ventilation fans push the rest of the Sangre-Negra gas down into your cellar, the coroner will rule that you accidentally poisoned yourself while concocting the toxin that killed Mateo Delucca! Adiós, sweetheart!"
Hector flipped the red vent switch—and a hiss of sweet, bitter-almond-scented violet mist began curling out of the ceiling grate at the far end of the quarantine corridor!
"Get back behind the positive-pressure surgical curtain, Bandido, Churro!" I ordered fiercely!
Instantly, Churro barked a sharp tactical command and herded the recovering thoroughbred and little Bandido into the hermetically sealed inner operating cube, while Bandido used his teeth to yank the heavy rubber oxygen-curtain seal shut!
I didn't panic—and I didn't beg at the window.
Because Don Rodrigo, Marisol, and Hector had no idea what I had kept hidden inside the hollow titanium heel of my late mother's surgical riding boot at the back of my instrument locker for the past three years.
Spinning toward my stainless-steel autoclave cabinet, I twisted the hidden biometric latch that only responded to the silver foal-hoof crescent scar on my left wrist and pulled out a heavy, velvet-lined saddle-case stamped with the intertwined crests of House Valen and House Delucca.
Resting inside on a bed of crimson silk was Crimson Signet #5 (El Estribo Carmesí — The Ruby-Spur Sovereign Stirrup-Key)!
Forged in 1995 by my mother Dr. Elena Valen (The Fifth Matriarch of the Crimson Crown Syndicate) and Mateo Delucca's mother Doña Isabella Delucca, it was a breathtaking sixteenth-century-style royal Andalusian riding stirrup and detachable rowel-spur crafted from solid black platinum and inlaid with an eighteen-carat, star-faceted Burmese pigeon-blood ruby—housing a microscopic rotary microfluidic centrifuge and three concentric chambers of lyophilized molecular counter-serum inside its arch!
The moment my fingers closed around the black-platinum stirrup arch and a drop of sweat and blood from my calloused thumb touched the eighteen-carat Burmese ruby rowel, the ancient relic hummed to life at thirty-six thousand revolutions per minute!
A dazzling three-dimensional crimson hologram projected straight out of the spinning ruby spur onto the glass wall of my surgical bay:
[FIFTH CRIMSON SIGNET: THE RUBY-SPUR SOVEREIGN STIRRUP-KEY — AWAKENED] [CUSTODIAN VERIFIED: DR. CAMILA VALEN (FIFTH MATRIARCH BLOODLINE)] [ALERT: SEAT #5 CUSTODIAN (DELUCCA, MATEO) WITHIN 40 METERS — SANGRE-NEGRA PARALYSIS AT 84.6% & RISING!] [STAGE 1 COUNTER-SERUM SYNTHESIZED IN MICRO-CHAMBER ALPHA — LOAD PNEUMATIC TRANQUILIZER INJECTOR NOW!]
With a crisp metallic CLICK, the base of the black-platinum stirrup ejected a glowing crimson crystal ampoule of Stage 1 Resonant Counter-Serum directly into my palm—alongside a paired ruby-and-black-platinum horse-spur choker clasp and an octagonal Burmese ruby cuff-stud!
Working with the lightning speed of an emergency trauma surgeon, I slotted the glowing crimson ampoule and the ruby rowel-prism directly into the breech of my high-velocity Valen Mk-V Pneumatic Veterinary Micro-Injector Rifle!
Outside the observation window, Hector and Marisol's laughter suddenly cut off in a chorus of terrified shrieks as the entire subterranean limestone ceiling shook with the deafening roar of a military-grade breach charge!
BOOOOOOOOOOM-CRACK!
At the top of the subterranean freight ramp thirty feet behind Don Rodrigo, Marisol, and Hector, the twelve-inch reinforced steel stable doors blew clean off their hinges in a blinding cloud of gunsmoke and limestone dust!
First through the smoke charged a magnificent, twelve-hundred-pound coal-black Spanish war-stallion (El Rey)—his muscles corded like black marble, though his nostrils flared and his front legs trembled from the early stages of the Sangre-Negra aerosol Don Rodrigo had vented into his stall upstairs!
And striding right beside the black stallion's shoulder—flanked by six heavily armed syndicate guards in black Kevlar—was the man who made every cartel boss, shipping magnate, and corrupt politician from Seville to Buenos Aires cross themselves in terror.
Mateo Delucca.
Six feet five inches of broad-shouldered, whipcord-muscled Argentine-Spanish lethality, dressed in a bespoke midnight-black leather riding coat over a charcoal silk shirt open at the throat, Mateo moved like a caged jaguar despite the lethal neuro-toxin coursing through his veins.
A jagged silver saber-and-shrapnel scar cut through his left eyebrow down to his square, shadow-darkened jaw, and his eyes—piercing, storm-lit dark obsidian flecked with molten Spanish gold—swept the subterranean vault with absolute, ice-cold savagery.
Even through the pressurized surgical glass, I could see the dark violet veins straining along the right side of Mateo's neck where a sub-clavicular titanium medical telemetry port flashed red (84.6% ... 86.1% ... 87.9% NEUROMUSCULAR PARALYSIS), and his left hand gripped a custom gold-inlaid tactical shotgun aimed straight at Don Rodrigo!
"Don Rodrigo Valen," Mateo Delucca's voice rumbled across the stone cellar—a deep, velvet-over-granite Argentine-Spanish baritone that vibrated through the limestone floor beneath my boots. "My satellite team in Tokyo and London just traced the Sangre-Negra neuro-toxin in my blood and in my stallion's stall straight to this subterranean vault. You have five seconds to tell me where the antidote is before I paint these whitewashed walls with your brains."
"I-it wasn't me, Lord Delucca!" Don Rodrigo squealed, shoving Marisol and Hector aside to point a trembling finger straight through the observation window at me! "It was my ungrateful niece, Dr. Camila Valen! Look at her inside that quarantine room—she's holding a pneumatic rifle loaded with a glowing red vial right now! She's the Black-Ledger chemist who poisoned your stallion!"
Mateo Delucca's six-foot-five frame pivoted toward the observation glass—his storm-gold eyes locking onto mine as the toxin telemetry monitor on his collar spiked to 88.4% — 60 SECONDS TO DIAPHRAGM LOCK—and he raised his tactical shotgun to blow the glass partition apart!
I didn't flinch.
I kicked open the inner surgical airlock door, braced my Mk-V Pneumatic Veterinary Micro-Injector Rifle—with his late mother's eighteen-carat Ruby-Spur Sovereign Stirrup-Key (Crimson Signet #5) blazing like a crimson star on the barrel—against my shoulder, and aimed the laser crosshairs dead-center at the subclavian port on Mateo Delucca's chest while Bandido reared up on his spotted hind legs and Churro let out a booming war-bark!
"Drop the shotgun and hold your chest still, Señor Delucca," I called out clearly over the roar of the alarms, "or in sixty seconds both you and that twelve-hundred-pound black stallion behind you go into full respiratory arrest—and I'm the only equine surgeon on earth holding the ruby spur that can restart your lungs!"
