Chapter 1:THE BRIDE WHO NEVER EXISTED
London, England — 11:47 a.m.
The church was beautiful.
White roses decorated the aisle, golden candles flickered beside the altar, and hundreds of guests waited eagerly for the wedding of the year.
Victoria Ashford stood before the mirror in the bridal suite, staring at the woman looking back at her.
Her wedding dress fitted perfectly. Her long brown hair fell in soft curls around her shoulders, and a delicate diamond necklace rested against her collarbone.
She looked like a woman who had won at life.
A beautiful home. A successful career. A wealthy fiancé.
What more could she possibly want?
Her phone vibrated.
ALEXANDER ❤️
Where are you, Mrs. Blackwood? The groom is getting impatient.
Victoria smiled as she typed.
Relax, Mr. Blackwood. You'll see me in a few minutes.
His reply arrived almost immediately.
I've waited my entire life for you. A few minutes won't kill me.
She laughed.
"That man is so dramatic."
"You're smiling like someone who has completely lost her mind."
Victoria turned.
Her best friend, Charlotte Bennett, stood in the doorway, holding a bouquet of white roses.
"Have you seen your face?" Charlotte continued. "Girl, if happiness were a crime, you'd be serving a life sentence."
Victoria burst out laughing.
"Please, Charlotte. Not today."
"Oh, today especially! You're marrying Alexander Blackwood. Do you understand what that means?"
"That I'll spend the rest of my life listening to him complain about people who don't know how to drive?"
Charlotte stared at her.
"Wow. Romance is truly dead."
They laughed together.
For a moment, everything felt perfect.
Then Charlotte's smile faded.
"Victoria?"
"Hmm?"
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
Charlotte hesitated before looking towards the door.
"Has Alexander ever told you about his first marriage?"
Victoria frowned.
"His first what?"
"His first marriage."
Victoria stared at her friend.
Then she laughed—not because anything was funny, but because the question was so ridiculous that she didn't know how else to react.
"Charlotte, are you okay? Alexander has never been married."
Charlotte said nothing.
"Right?" Victoria pressed.
"I thought so too."
Victoria's smile disappeared.
"What does that mean?"
Before Charlotte could answer, someone knocked on the door.
Three sharp knocks.
A wedding coordinator entered.
"Miss Ashford, we're ready for you."
Victoria looked at Charlotte one last time.
"We'll finish this conversation later."
Charlotte nodded, but something in her expression made Victoria's stomach tighten.
As Victoria walked towards the church entrance, she forced herself to forget the conversation.
Charlotte was probably nervous. Weddings did strange things to people.
Besides, Alexander loved her.
She had no reason to doubt him.
Or so she thought.
The music began.
The doors opened.
Every guest stood.
Victoria lifted her chin and stepped into the aisle.
At the altar stood Alexander Blackwood.
Tall. Handsome. Impeccably dressed in a black suit.
When their eyes met, his expression softened.
There he was.
Her future.
Her home.
The man she had chosen above everyone else.
Victoria smiled.
Alexander smiled back.
And for a few precious seconds, the entire world disappeared.
Then the church doors slammed open.
BANG!
Everyone turned.
A woman stood in the doorway.
She was drenched from the rain, her dark hair clinging to her face. She wore a simple white dress beneath a black coat, and her breathing was uneven.
A security guard hurried towards her.
"Ma'am, you can't come in here."
"Move."
"Ma'am—"
"I SAID MOVE!"
The entire church fell silent.
Victoria stopped walking.
The woman pushed past the guard and looked directly at Alexander.
His smile vanished.
His hands dropped to his sides.
And for the first time since Victoria had known him, Alexander Blackwood looked genuinely terrified.
The woman walked towards the altar.
One step.
Then another.
She stopped in front of him.
"Alexander," she said quietly.
He didn't answer.
She let out a bitter laugh.
"Did you really think you could marry another woman and pretend I never existed?"
A murmur spread through the church.
Victoria turned towards Alexander.
"Alex?"
He stared at the stranger.
"Why are you here?"
The woman's eyes filled with tears.
"Why am I here?" she repeated. "You promised me you'd tell her the truth."
Victoria's heart began to pound.
"What truth?"
Nobody answered.
Not Alexander.
Not Charlotte.
Not even the priest.
The stranger finally turned towards Victoria.
For a moment, something resembling pity crossed her face.
Then she reached into her coat and pulled out an old photograph.
"Look at this."
Victoria hesitated before taking it.
The photograph showed a young Alexander standing beside a woman outside an old stone building. His arm was wrapped around her waist, and they looked far more intimate than two ordinary friends.
The woman's face was unmistakable.
It was the stranger standing before her.
On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.
October 14, 2006.
Victoria's breath caught.
That was the year she had been born.
She turned the photograph over again, studying Alexander's younger face.
He had been with this woman when Victoria was just a baby.
Who was she?
And why had Alexander never mentioned her?
Victoria slowly lifted her gaze.
"Who are you?"
The woman swallowed.
"My name is Evelyn."
She looked directly at Alexander.
"I'm his wife."
A woman in the front row gasped.
Someone whispered, "His wife?"
Victoria felt as though the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.
She turned towards her fiancé.
"Tell me she's lying."
Alexander opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
"Alexander, LOOK AT ME!"
He finally met her eyes.
And what Victoria saw there frightened her more than the photograph.
Not confusion.
Not disbelief.
Recognition.
He knew this woman.
He knew exactly who she was.
And he had never intended for Victoria to meet her.
"Evelyn," he said quietly, "you need to leave."
She shook her head.
"No. I've spent years keeping your secrets. I'm done."
"Please don't do this here."
"Here?" Evelyn laughed bitterly. "You chose to make promises to another woman in front of hundreds of people. Why shouldn't the truth come out in front of them?"
Victoria's hands began to tremble.
"Alex, were you married to her?"
He looked at her.
"Victoria, please. It's complicated."
"That's not an answer!"
The guests had stopped pretending not to listen.
Charlotte stood near the front row, her face pale.
Victoria looked at her best friend.
"You knew something, didn't you?"
Charlotte lowered her eyes.
That was answer enough.
Victoria took a step backwards.
"I can't believe this."
Evelyn's expression softened.
"Victoria, there's something else you need to know."
Alexander immediately moved towards her.
"Evelyn, don't."
She ignored him.
"Your parents knew about me."
Victoria froze.
"My parents are dead."
"I know."
Evelyn's voice broke.
"That's why I came."
She reached into her coat again and pulled out a small, yellowed envelope.
On the front, in handwriting Victoria recognised immediately, were four words.
FOR MY DAUGHTER, VICTORIA.
Her mother's handwriting.
Victoria stared at the envelope.
Her mother had died when she was twelve.
Her father had followed three years later.
So why did this stranger have a letter addressed to her?
And why was Alexander looking at it as though it contained something capable of destroying him?
Evelyn placed the envelope in Victoria's hands.
"Your mother made me promise that you would receive this on your wedding day."
Victoria stared at her.
"You knew my mother?"
Evelyn nodded.
"Better than you could ever imagine."
Victoria's fingers trembled against the paper.
"What is inside?"
Evelyn looked at Alexander one last time.
"The truth about your family."
Victoria tore open the envelope.
She unfolded the letter.
And read the first sentence.
My darling Victoria,
If you are reading this, then the man you are about to marry has finally made the same mistake his father made twenty-three years ago.
Victoria stopped.
She read the sentence again.
Then she looked up at Alexander.
He took a step towards her.
"Victoria, please. Let me explain."
But she was already reading the next line.
You must leave this church immediately. Whatever happens, do not let Alexander take you to the Blackwood family estate tonight.
Victoria's eyes filled with tears.
She looked at the man she loved.
The man she had trusted with her future.
The man who had just watched another woman claim to be his wife.
"Why?" she whispered.
Alexander reached for her hand.
She pulled away.
"WHY CAN'T I GO TO YOUR HOUSE?"
His silence answered nothing.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Then she spoke the words that changed everything.
"Because, Victoria, your mother didn't die by accident."
Victoria stared at her.
"What did you just say?"
Evelyn's lips trembled.
"Your mother's death was connected to the Blackwood family. And if you go to that estate tonight, you may discover why she spent her final days trying to protect you."
Victoria looked down at the letter.
There was more writing beneath the warning.
A final sentence, written in a different ink, as though someone had added it years later.
Whatever you do, never trust a man named Alexander Blackwood.
Victoria slowly raised her eyes.
Alexander stood before her, his face drained of colour.
For the first time, she wondered whether she had ever truly known the man she was about to marry.
Outside, thunder shook the windows.
Inside the church, hundreds of people waited for her next move.
Victoria removed her engagement ring.
And placed it in Alexander's hand.
"The wedding is over."
She turned towards the doors.
But before she could take another step, Alexander grabbed her attention with four words.
"Victoria, she's not your mother."
Victoria stopped.
Slowly, she turned around.
"What?"
Alexander looked at Evelyn.
Then back at Victoria.
"The woman who raised you wasn't your biological mother."
The church fell silent.
Victoria's world shattered.
And Evelyn whispered something that made everyone gasp.
"Alexander, you promised you'd never tell her."
