6:40 AM
If I could get rid of any noise, it’d have to be any and all alarm sounds. Maybe not fire alarms because we need those, but the morning alarms. Yes, I understand that they are there to help us wake up and start our day, but sometimes I just wish that I could stab it.
Right now is one of those "sometimes". It had barely gone off a second ago and I was already trying to find the off button. Okay, that’s a lie. Since it’s on my phone all I have to do is look at it and press a button. But the light of my phone was blinding my eyes and my finger couldn’t quite hit the off button. I just wanted to sleep a little more.
I finally get it to stop when my mom walks in.
“Buenos días mí bella. Time to get up.”
I groan. “No school please.”
“Oh, c’mon. Get up, you don’t want to be late for your first day of senior year do you?”
I’m about to reply but she doesn’t give me a chance to by turning on the lights.
“Mama!” I groan.
“Get ready. Don’t make Xavier be late.” She says, walking out.
I check my phone real quick and scroll through the notifications before rolling my attractive self out of bed and falling onto the ground. I force myself up and go to the bathroom to get ready.
“Ready for your first day as a sophomore?” I ask Xavier on the way to school.
He shrugs. “It’s just a filler year. It’s nothing special.”
“Well, if you need anything, just let me know.” I offer as I park.
“Yeah, sure.” He responds, getting out of the car and walking towards the building.
I sigh.
“Heyyy!” A voice that belongs to my best friend Emery fills my ears as I turn around.
“Hey, Em! How was your summer?” I give her a quick hug.
“It was great. I met some really cute guys when I was on vacation. But alas, they will never compare to the fictional ones.” She frowns.
“Amen sister. You ready to walk in?”
“Let’s do the damn thing!” She beams, holding her arm out for me to take.
I roll my eyes and take it. On the way inside, I notice a few people whispering about Isaac Coleman. I knew little things about him and had briefly exchanged greetings with him. I hardly cared to pay attention to him.
However, since it was the first day of school, I was curious. Of course since I didn’t have the slightest clue on what exactly they were talking about, I asked my number one source; Emery.
“Hey, Emery? What are people saying about Isaac? It’s the first day of school. Were their summers really that boring?”
She shakes her head in pity. “Oh, Mar. What would you do without me? Apparently, he was seen with some girl this morning in her early 20's. Looks like his lifestyle never stops.”
I just nod and get to my locker to unpack. Emery does the same, and in the matter of a minute, we are ready to head off to our first class; English. Emery takes a seat in the front while I take one in the back. I see her immediately starting a conversation with the person next to her and smile. I take out my book and wait for the teacher to arrive and get things started.
Almost a minute until the bell rings for class to start, someone sits on the desk next to me. I don’t think much of it because although no one really ever sits next to me, it doesn’t really matter if one person decides to sit there for the first day of school. They’ll probably be sitting somewhere else tomorrow.
I take a quick glance at who it was. Unexpectedly enough, it was Isaac Coleman.
The sound of the teachers heels coming into the classroom take my attention and I mark my place in the book.
“Good morning seniors. Get ready to start the first day with boredom as your expectation. The only thing we will be doing today is going over the syllabus. I trust you all know how to read by now, so you may look over it yourselves and make sure you have the supplies needed for this class. That is all for today, so find something to do quietly.” She passes out the papers and sits at her desk.
I scan over the sheet, making a mental note of anything I have missing. I’m only missing one thing which I technically don’t have to worry about since it’s just the first book that we will be reading and it’s provided for us. I put the syllabus in my folder and open my book backup to pick up where I left off.
“Hey.” A whisper interrupts the dialogue of my characters. It’s followed by a tap on my shoulder.
“What?” I turn to the book-blocker who goes by the name of Isaac.
“I was just gonna say that that is a really good book.”
“Are you joking?”
He looks confused. “No?”
“You’ve read Fangirl?”
“Is that so hard to believe?”
“Yes, actually it is.”
He opens his mouth to say something else but then closes it and shakes his head. I look at him for another second before shrugging and going back to my book that I can actually enjoy in peace now.
12:10 PM
“So, anything interesting with you day and classes so far?” I ask, sitting across from Emery and pulling out my sandwich.
“Not really. Except for the fact that Mr. Shaffer is super boring and I don’t think that’s going to change.” She sighs, taking a bite of her apple.
I nod.
“What about you?! I saw you talking to Isaac in English. What was that about?”
“Nothing really.”
She gives me a look.
“I’m serious. The only thing that happened was a brief conversation in which he told me that he thinks the book that I’m reading is good.”
“He’s read Fangirl?”
“I couldn’t believe it either.”
“I guess you do learn new things every day.” She says thoughtfully, taking a sip of her Ginger Ale.
“I guess so. What class do you have next?”
The conversation goes on like any other and soon, lunch is over. We say goodbye and go in separate directions for the rest of the day.
2:45 PM
hey, are you riding with me today?
I text Xavier once I get to my car since he’s got a thing for leaving school as soon as he possibly can. It is the first day of school though, so he might just be catching up with some of his friends. I lean against the car and pretend to be doing something on my phone as I wait for a response.
“Hey, Amara!”
I turn. To head to the direction of the voice. It’s Adam Ulrich. He’s in my history class and like a few others, has been going to Dawson since Elementary school.
“Hey!” I smile as he gets closer to me. “What’s up?”
“Not much. Glad the first day is finally over. Did you get a lot of homework today?”
“Nope, not really. Just the usual syllabus signing and like, a worksheet for math. What about you?”
“Pretty much the same.” He responds while adjusting his book bag strap.
We don’t really say much else and it’s about to get slightly more awkward when thankfully, my phone chimes. It’s Xavier.
hanging with ryan before going home
I send a quick response before telling Adam that I should get going. I give him an awkward goodbye wave before setting my stuff in the passenger seat and driving home.
3:54 PM
I’ve been chilling on the couch in my pajamas watching Netflix since I got home. Technically, it hasn’t been that long since I got home, so this isn’t really that bad. I’ve been watching Baby Daddy for like, the sixth time. Unfortunately, I have to pause Ben’s speaking to open the door since someone is knocking.
“What are you doing here?” I immediately ask him once I open the door.
“Amara, you know why I’m here.”
“Tyler, now’s really not a good time. My brother is going to be home soon. As in, any minute now. And my sister should be home from dance practice soon too.”
“C’mon Am. Just a quickie?”
“No. Bye.” I quickly shut the door in his face before he can say anything else and I lock it.
I turn off the TV and go to my room to work on the little homework I had gotten until Xavier and eventually Rosie came home. I made sure that they both had something to eat and set the table for my mom and dad before getting dressed to go to work.
I don’t have to be there until about six-ish, but it takes me almost two hours to get to Books & Beyond.I like working there because pretty much no one from school goes there since Barnes & Noble is way closer. I kiss Rosie goodbye and set out.
I don’t get there until 5:58 so I hustle my way into the building. There’s not many people here, but as the sun dips into the horizon and the sky gets darker, more people arrive. Especially around midnight.
Much to my surprise, one of those people happens to be none other than Isaac Coleman.
