Departure
In this world there are, how should I say, supernatural beings. They are close but far at the same time, well hidden among humans. Criminal rate of this time helps in a way hide this beings. But they are not totally hidden from the humans, there are some who know about them and live among them peacefully. And there are those who resent them and want to get rid of them. Among these supernatural, werewolves, vampires, fairies, witches, warlocks, necromancers and what not, there are those named hybrids. Those hybrids are supernatural born from two different species. Long ago they were considered dangerous, but not anymore. In today’s time they are formally called protectors. Those protectors are everywhere, in every pack. A pack, as some well know is a group of people come together like a family ruled by an Alpha. Those Alphas, are in turn led by the king of supernatural who rules over them all. Another higher power besides the King are the elders, group of people with special gifts that are born or chosen by the goddess to protect all and work with the king to ensure the safety of us all.
I myself am a supernatural. To be more precise I am a Protector of my pack Shadow Falls. I was born and raised here by the pack elderly. My parents died in one of the wars with the rogues when I was too small to remember. My name is Lilith Green and as I said I am the Protector of Shadow Falls. I don’t know how the other Protectors are treated, maybe I will find out but for me, life was kind of easy. The pack never bothered me or me them. I am usually ignored unless there is a problem; there were never real problems just teenage pranks to be honest. If there ever were problems they never really did rely on me, not trusting me I presume. The thing is, Shadow Falls is a bit of a strange pack. They are in a way stuck with each other and act more like human communities than a pack. Some don’t take matters seriously most of the time, not even the old Alpha’s son who is supposed to be more mature, being that he is now Alpha and everyone counts on him. But back to me, here everyone thinks I am a curse, not because I am a hybrid but because everyone seems to think the reason my parents, well respected people of the pack and ones that kept some kind of order in this pack, died because of me, as they protected me from an attack, now what mother and father won’t protect their child?
As well as they ignore me at the same time they fear me. The reason is quite simple; I am not like any other hybrid. Yes, I am half and half, my mother being a werewolf and my father a vampire, but at the same time I have other supernatural blood in me. At the age of three, when I was bullied by the pack because of my parent′s death, I discovered I am a witch. Years later, two new supernatural roots came to be known to me and so on until today. My pack knows only of my vampire, werewolf and witch side but as I well discovered over the years I have almost, if not all the abilities of known supernatural creatures. I figured that I being three halves of something was enough of information for my pack as I saw the fear in their eyes when they passed me, not anymore though.
I was now reaching my 18th birthday, year that was special, after all at the age of eighteen we find our mate, a soul-mate made just for us. The morning began as usual; I woke up as the first rays of sunrise touched my skin. Nothing was different, just a bit chilly, as winter made its presence known. The land of the pack was now left without any greenery, just the fallen leaves here and there that formed a colourful blanket over the now cold earth. And the mist which rose above the trees dispersing lazily as the sun rose higher and higher made the land visible to those who did not see in the dark. I did my usual morning rounds around the pack house before going for my run around the pack land. I did my duty as their protector even though they did not want me there. I had to be extra careful today as later there would be a celebration taking place. It was not for me in case anyone wondered, it was just a celebration for the beta who had found his mate a few days ago, and by pure chance may I add as he stumbled upon her on one of their visits to Crescent Falls, the land of the king. They were pretty insistent on befriending the king, so insistent that they made any excuse to go there every month without avail. I finished my watch over the pack house and shifted into my white wolf, another strange thing about me as most werewolves when they shifted had the same colour as their hair, whatever colour that may be. In my case it was different as I am red haired, not a blood red but a natural one, more towards orange. What I find unique for myself is the fact that I do not have a specific eye colour. It is constantly changing from one colour to another depending on my mood. As I was now checking the surrounding area and enjoying the cold breeze, I felt one of the pack members trying to reach me through the mind link. I did not bother lifting my barrier as I knew the only thing that they possibly wanted was to inform me of the beginning of the party, which I had to be present for in order to hear the Alpha’s speech. I changed back into my human form, if they were that desperate to reach me, as they tried countless of times to breach my barrier in the last five minutes or so, I figured I should use my vampire speed in order to please them with my presence...just a bit.
‘About time...’Britney, the Alpha’s mate was as-how shall I put it...oh yes just as stuck up as him. She was an attention seeker and did not fail to punish those who stray that attention from her.
’Excuse me for making sure the border did not get breached by rogues...your majesty.’
’Don’t mock me mutt...now go inside your Alpha is about to make his announcement.′ She had a sly smile on her face as she said that, smile that sent chills down my spine. Whatever he was about to say was not to be good, not at all. I went and sat in the far back of the hall room, away from the excited crowd of fools that lingered to every word those two foxes said.
’Thank you all for coming today. As you well know my best friend and your beta had found his mate.’ Everyone cheered at that, but he was not finished yet, he holds his hand up to silence them, and they did.
’But this is not the only thing we shall celebrate tonight. As you well know Ryan, one of our warriors lost his mate a few years back due to an accident’...more of a mistake on his part if you ask me.
’And so, after long discussion we, I and my beta together with our mates and him decided that it is time for him to mate another she wolf. So we decided to mate him with the so cold protector of this pack Lilith Green.’ As those words left his mouth every head turned to me. Oh he was sly, more cunning than I thought, but stupid enough to think I would mate someone that is not my mate.
‘And what makes you think I will mate with him dear Alpha?’
‘Stop with the mockery Lilith, you will mate with Ryan tonight.’
’And if I don’t? What then? You, yourself know that you are not able to force me into mating another wolf other than my true mate.′
’Do not defy me mutt, you will do as I say...′
’And if I don’t?′
‘You will do so or leave and never come back.’
’Are you sure that is what you want? Are you willing to risk the protection I give the pack as a protector if I leave, just so you could satisfy your ego by mating me with him? Are you sure this is what you truly want?′
’Very sure, do what I say or leave, we do not need your services, we never did in fact, and I only put up with you because of father.′
’You are a fool Alpha Marcus and you all are sheep following your master blindly; do not complain when we meet again, because I am damn sure we will at some point in time. Do not say I did not warn you of what danger you will be in without me.′
‘What danger? We can survive without a protector just as we did a long time ago.’
’Oh Britney, as you said it was a long time ago. Anyway, I shall take my leave, by midnight I will be out of this territory and your protective shield will be lifted.′
Never in my life of 17 years did I encounter such stupidity, but then if I said such thing I would be lying as this pack I had the fortune and misfortune to be born in had always been clueless up to a point. They never did respect one another, especially the week members of the pack as the Alpha group, a name I made up, picked on them occasionally. Anyway, as I promised them I was out of their territory and once my feet were past the border line I could feel my protection barrier lifting. I took with me only the essentials, some clothes and the money my parents left me. I was walking in the forests of no man’s land that covered a large amount of ground between pack territories. It was easier this way; I was not bothering the packs, even though I sensed the patrols every time I passed the borders. There were rules regarding protectors. They were not allowed to leave the pack under their care without a justified reason. It meant treason to do so otherwise. I had a justified reason to leave but Shadow Fall pack would not tell the truth upon the intervention of the Elders, or the council as they prefer to be known. Their dishonesty will bestow on me the wardens, those who will eliminate threats to our kingdom. This means I have less time on my hands to reach a populated area, a human one where I would have the chance to tell my side of the story.
