A New Beginning

Chapter 1

Zaria

Valentine’s Day.

As the humans called it.

A day dedicated to love, affection, and the promises people made to one another. I had heard enough conversations about the holiday to understand its meaning, though I had never truly believed a day on the calendar could change the way someone loved.

Love had always been a complicated thing in my life.

For years, I had been taught that I was a disappointment. That I was weak. That the very thing that made me different was the reason I would never be worthy of the things other people took for granted.

Yet here I was.

The mate of the Alpha King.

Keron.

The man whose presence had once unsettled me. The man who had kept his distance because he did not know how to handle the bond between us due to my blindess. The man who had slowly, patiently, become someone I trusted.

And now, as I sat near the window in our chambers, listening to the gentle winter breeze brush against the glass, I found myself thinking about the night everything changed.

The Winter Ball.

It had been the first time I had willingly allowed Keron to present me to his kingdom as his mate.

And I remembered every moment.

The Winter Ball had been held on December twenty-fourth, the night before Christmas.

The Royal Packhouse had been filled with the sounds of preparation long before the guests arrived. Servants moved through the halls, musicians rehearsed their instruments, and the scent of pine, cinnamon, and fresh flowers lingered in the air.

I had spent the afternoon with the Queen and Selene, allowing them to help me prepare.

I was nervous.

Not because I was afraid of the people who would be attending, but because I knew what the evening meant.

Keron wanted to present me as his mate.

Not simply introduce me as someone he was spending time with. Not hide behind the uncertainty of our bond.

He wanted the kingdom to know.

And I had finally given him permission.

“You don’t have to do this tonight,” Keron had told me earlier that afternoon.

His voice had been low, careful. I could hear the concern beneath it.

“I know.”

“We can wait until you’re comfortable.”

I had turned toward his voice.

“Keron, I am comfortable.”

He had gone quiet.

I reached for his hand, finding it after a moment. The warmth of his skin against mine sent that familiar spark through my fingers.

“I want you to present me as your mate,” I whispered. “I’m tired of feeling like something you have to keep hidden.”

His fingers closed around mine.

“You have never been something I wanted to hide.”

“Then let them know.”

I felt him bring my hand to his lips.

“Tonight, Zaria,” he murmured. “The entire kingdom will know.”

And for the first time, I believed him.

The ballroom was alive with music when Keron escorted me inside.

I could hear the conversations around us, the gentle clinking of glasses, and the rhythmic movement of people dancing across the polished floor.

The room smelled of roses, winter pine, and the faint traces of hundreds of different wolves gathered beneath one roof.

Keron’s hand rested firmly against mine.

His presence was unmistakable. Even among the many scents and voices, I knew when he was beside me.

“Are you all right?” he asked quietly.

“I’m nervous.”

His thumb brushed over my knuckles.

“You have nothing to fear.”

“That’s easy for you to say. You’re the Alpha King.”

A quiet chuckle escaped him.

“And you are my mate.”

The words warmed something deep inside me.

Before the evening began, Keron had explained that his parents, the elders, and several important members of the kingdom would be present. I knew the announcement would carry weight. I knew some of them would have opinions.

But I was no longer the frightened girl who had spent her childhood believing she was unworthy.

I had survived too much to allow their judgment to define me.

When the music softened, Keron guided me toward the center of the room.

The conversations gradually quieted.

I felt the change in the atmosphere. The sudden attention. The way the room seemed to hold its breath.

Keron’s hand tightened around mine.

“Tonight,” he began, his voice carrying through the ballroom, “I stand before my kingdom with something I should have acknowledged long ago.”

My heart beat faster.

“I have found my mate.”

A murmur passed through the crowd.

Keron turned toward me. I could feel his attention resting on me, steady and unwavering.

“Zaria.”

He said my name with a tenderness that made my chest ache.

“She is the woman the Moon Goddess chose for me. But more than that, she is the woman who chose to stand beside me.”

My breath caught.

“I present to you my mate. Your future Queen.”

For a moment, I could not speak.

The room erupted in applause. I heard the king's mother delighted voice, the King’s father approval, and the elders acknowledging the announcement.

But I heard something else, too.

A whisper of disbelief.

I knew not everyone would accept me immediately. I knew my blindness would become a subject of conversation, whether they spoke of it openly or not.

Still, Keron did not release my hand.

He leaned closer.

“Are you all right, my Queen?”

I smiled.

“Yes, my King.”

His breath caught at the words.

And then he kissed my forehead.

The applause grew louder.

For the first time in my life, I did not feel like I was standing in the shadow of someone else’s expectations.

I felt like I belonged.

The evening had been a success.

The elders had acknowledged our bond, Keron’s parents had welcomed me warmly, and the kingdom had accepted the announcement far better than I had expected.

Even Keron seemed lighter.

But the night held another surprise.

Elena.

Keron’s longtime friend.

The woman who had once shared a relationship with him before our bond changed everything.

I had known she would be attending the ball. Keron had been honest with me about their history, and although the knowledge had once unsettled me, I had chosen to trust him.

Elena had been standing near the refreshments when something unexpected happened.

Noah.

My friend.

The man who had spent months beside me, helping me navigate the unfamiliar world of the Royal Pack.

I heard the sudden change in his breathing. The startled silence that followed. The unmistakable tension between two wolves who had just discovered something neither had anticipated.

A mate bond.

Selene had been the first to whisper the words.

“Noah?”

I turned toward the sound of her voice.

“What happened?”

There was a pause.

Then Noah’s voice came, strained and disbelieving.

“She’s my mate.”

Elena’s response was equally stunned.

“Mate?”

The ballroom seemed to fall silent around them.

I could only imagine the shock on their faces.

Keron’s former lover had become Noah’s mate.

The Moon Goddess certainly had a sense of humor.

Later, when Noah finally found me, he was still struggling to process what had happened.

“I don’t even know what to say,” he admitted.

I reached for his hand.

“Then don’t say anything yet.”

He laughed nervously.

“You’re taking this surprisingly well.”

“Perhaps I’m simply waiting for you to stop talking long enough to think.”

He groaned.

“Zaria.”

I laughed.

For all the uncertainty that surrounded the evening, I was happy for him.

Noah deserved love.

And if the Moon Goddess had chosen Elena for him, then perhaps there was a reason their paths had crossed only tonight.

The ball had brought more than a royal announcement.

It had brought a new beginning for all of us.

The new year arrived quietly.

There were no new reports of attacks along the eastern border. No signs of the vampires who had threatened the kingdom. No whispers of the witch who had appeared so unexpectedly in my life.

The pack had returned to its routines.

Keron spent his days handling royal matters, attending meetings, and overseeing the kingdom. Darius remained at his side, as dependable as ever.

Noah and Elena were slowly navigating their new bond. Selene teased Noah whenever she had the opportunity, and I could often hear his protests from across the room.

Life had become peaceful.

Almost ordinary.

And yet, something inside me had changed.

I could not explain it.

Sometimes, when I was alone, I felt a strange warmth beneath my skin. It was subtle, almost like the feeling of sunlight resting against my face.

Other times, I sensed something stirring deep within me.

Not my wolf.

Something else.

I remembered Amara’s words.

Your magic has awakened.

The thought made me uneasy.

There had been no sudden transformation. No visible change in my body. No dramatic surge of power that I could identify.

I was still Zaria.

Still blind.

Still learning how to navigate a world that had never been designed for someone like me.

But I could no longer ignore the feeling that something was waiting.

Something I did not understand.

And perhaps that was what frightened me most.

Because for the first time, I was beginning to wonder if the darkness I had lived with all my life had been hiding more than I ever imagined.

A gentle knock interrupted my thoughts.

“Zaria?”

Keron’s voice.

I smiled.

“Come in.”

The door opened, and I heard his footsteps approach.

He stopped beside me.

“What are you thinking about?”

“Valentine’s Day.”

He chuckled softly.

“The human holiday?”

“As they call it.”

“And what does my Queen think of it?”

I reached for his hand.

“I think it’s a reminder that love can begin in the most unexpected places.”

His fingers intertwined with mine.

“And do you believe that?”

I turned toward his voice.

“I do.”

He leaned down and pressed a kiss against my forehead.

“Then perhaps we should celebrate.”

I smiled against his hand.

“Perhaps we should.”

For a moment, everything felt perfect.

The man I loved was beside me. The kingdom was at peace. My friends were finding their own happiness.

And yet, beneath that peace, something stirred.

Something ancient.

Something waiting.

I did not know what the future held.

But I knew one thing.

Whatever came next, I would not face it alone.

Not anymore.
