Cupid's Flight

Person 1: “We’re sorry to inform you that you’ve missed your flight. If you would like to reschedule for the next closest plane we’d be happy to help.” I sigh as I try to hold my anger. “Thank you, I would like that please.” I hear them chuckle in the background and my irritation grows. “We have you scheduled, have a nice day.” “Tha-” They hang up. I walk away from where my original flight line was in frustration. “This is why I hate people. They laugh at other’s misfortune thinking that they’d never make that mistake. Stupid! Argh, this is just stupid!” I speed up a little to make it to the airport and see when my flight was.

Cupid: “What do you mean you’re dumping me because I’m late!?” I listen to the person speak to someone on the phone. Silly human, it’s because they were never your soulmate no.... you haven’t met yours yet. They grip their phone in anger and slump in a seat. I sigh, wondering why I’m here, then they came. I look at them, and immediately know. The Soulmate.

Person 2: This is aggravating. You miss ONE flight and suddenly they aren’t into you.... or maybe I’m being cheated on. I click my teeth in anger of my own incompetence. I look to see my flight isn’t for another twelve hours. “Great.... twelve hours contemplating on why I’ve been tossed aside. I look to see someone rushing over, and once they saw the time for the plane, they hold in tears. My eyes widen when I see they’d also missed their plane.

Cupid: “This is perfect! They’re here, in the same situation with lots of time on their hands! This might be easier than I thought.” I watch the person holding back a cry sit in a chair like pudding. Goodness, no manners. The other person looks at them in awe, and sits next to them. “So, you missed your flight too?” They try to start a conversation. Hmmm, I should give them little code names. Let’s see, how about Back Door and Uneducated. Makes sense because they’re fake significant other is actually cheating on them while the other missed their flight because they didn’t really pay attention to how different time zones work. Yep, perfect. Uneducated looks at Back Door with regret in their eyes. “I missed my flight while I was walking from my last flight.” “How’d you manage that wrong ticket or they lied to you?” They shake their head. “I didn’t pay attention to the time zones” Back Door looks at the bags under Uneducated’s eyes seeing they were exhausted. “Did you forget to look it up?” Uneducated nods. “I didn’t think it would matter.” Back Door scoffs. “Well then that’s you’re own fault.” Uneducated gasps feeling hurt. Oh boy, this might not be that easy. “If my excuse was so poor then why are you late, huh!?” Back Door gets defensive on Uneducated. “My partner told me the wrong time for the flight and I made it late.” “Wrong time?” Back Door nods. “Dating for two years and a couple of months ago it had to go long distances with work. We thought a visit would be nice so they said they’d buy the ticket, and well they gave me the wrong time. That’s all!” Uneducated smirks. “Sounds like you’re being cheated on.” “Yeah, well it also sounds like you’re a lazy ass bum that can’t do anything independently.”

My eyes widen with what I hear. Uneducated grits their teeth and slap Back Door. “You don’t even know me!” Tears flow out that were waiting to be let loose and Back Door just looks up at Uneducated leaving. Can’t say I blame Uneducated, they’re very insecure about being a new adult for only a couple of months. The world is hard, for Back Door too. How should I fix this.... since I let it get out of hand? I mean, can they really fall in love with each other after only meeting each other for like half an hour? I work my magic on Back Door and I make them feel more guilt about what they said. “Do you really want to leave it at that, sure they were brutally honest but what you said was worse for words, right? Back Door scoffs. “Being like that to a stranger isn’t criminal. I’ll never see them again so it doesn’t matter.” “I saw the way you looked at Un- them. You felt a thump in your heart, a spark. You knew from the moment you laid eyes-” “What kind of thoughts am I having anyway? All I felt was pity.” I sigh seeing that this was going to be more challenging. “Fine, leave them. Have them hate you while you go to that lover of yours. You know they are cheating on you, but you won’t accept that fact.” Back Door puts their hands over their eyes as they try to ignore me. I click my teeth. I notice Uneducated is still in sight. Alright, you’re next. “That was harsh, wasn’t it.” Uneducated sniffles. “This is my first time flying on my own. I don’t even know why I’m going, I just. Felt like I had to go.” I see, so you felt it even before Back Door did. “It was nice meeting someone on the same boat as you, wasn’t it.” “Yeah, for a little. Until they decided to insult me!” “To be fair, you did say something harsh as well.” Uneducated sighs. “Right, it was kinda mean, but not AS harsh.” I sigh. “Make a compromise with me here!” “Why am I being so hard on myself. What I said was the truth, nothing more, nothing less. They were a good for nothing jerk anyway.” Facepalm. I should give them time, so they can clear their minds.

After about three or four hours, Uneducated actually fell asleep. Hmmm. Alright Back Door, time to be helpful. “Seems they fell asleep. That’s dangerous with the world we live in. Go, sit beside them.” Back Door looks over and sighs as they walk over and sit with Uneducated. Back Door wipes Uneducated’s tears and just sits there on their phone. I smile thinking that this might work. After a couple of hours, Back Door’s phone dies and Uneducated wakes up. Uneducated see Back Door and jumps in surprise. “Why are you here!?” Back Door scoffs. “You fell asleep, it’s dangerous to do that when you’re on your own.” Uneducated gets offended. “I don’t need parenting, especially from you!” Baco Door frowns, “I could’ve stayed away and left you alone, but most people don’t like that vulnerability.” Uneducated pouts, “I’m an adult now I can handle myself.” “You’re acting like a child. How old are you anyway?” “I’m 18!” Back Door’s eyes widen. “Why, how old are you!?” “I’m 23.” Uneducated frowns. “Whatever!” Back Door sighs. “I’m sorry about what I said earlier.” “What?” Back Door grips his fists tighter. “I said I’m sorry OK.” Uneducated’s face loosens up as their eyes widen. That’s my cue. “Seems you were wrong about them.” Uneducated’s tears come back. “D-don’t cry!” “I-I’m sorry too!” Uneducated hugs Back Door surprising them. Alright Back Door, your move. “This is better than before, right?” Back Door slightly nods. “Stay with them, OK?” I speak with sincerity seeing my job here is done. Back Door smiles as they hold Uneducated. Seeing that mistakes can make miracles.
