Smoke filled the girl’s lungs, waking me up. Orange flames licked up the walls. The girl jumped out of bed and began looking for her dad. The smoke was choking her and making her eyes water. She immediately went to the basement where her dad usually makes his inventions. When she got there, her father was slumped over his desk. She shook him and he didn’t move. She tried to wake him as flames ravaged all around them. Outside the house, two people were watching the fire. The girl asked, “Are you sure about this, Santiago?”
Santiago rubbed his eyes together. “Well, Kimiko, if she can’t get past this, maybe she doesn’t deserve to join us.”
