Chapter One

Brooklyn POV, Thursday. 10:26am.

Keeping my head bent down I grip my portfolio tightly as I sit in the bland waiting room. Biting my lip I swallow the lump in my throat before my knee starts to bounce up and down with nerves.

What was I thinking? There’s no chance I’ll get this job. They’d probably hire a dead whale over me for god sake!

Groaning I wipe a bead of sweat from my forehead, I better not have ruined my damn foundation. This make-up took me years to do. Okay maybe not years but definitely a while.

Letting out a quick breath I mentally slap myself in the face. There’s no chance you’ll get the job if you act like a bitch in heat.

Stop rambling!

Taking slow breaths I close eyes and inhale before exhaling slowly. Opening my eyes again I stare at the posters around the room. Some talking about health insurance while others promote fixed funeral prices. That’s reassuring.

Okay just calm down. You’ll have more of a chance if your professional. Smoothing down my black jacket I freeze as my name is called.

Slowly standing on shaky legs I hold my head high and connect my gaze with the blonde woman’s calculating one. ‘Follow me’ she commands before turning on her heel and marching out the door.

Crossing the wooden floor I follow her, matching her strides from behind. Keeping myself calm she stops in front of an oak door and knocks before peeking her head inside and saying ‘I’ve got the next interviewee’. Pushing the door open for me with a barely noticeable creak I smile at her before stepping in.

Okay don’t panic, be professional. Hearing a click I turn my head and see the lady has shut the door. Turning back I face the woman before me.

Walking towards her desk I take a seat opposite her and smile before pushing my portfolio across the uncluttered desk.

‘Okay...’ She begins before opening my slim folder, ‘Brooklyn!’ She says smiling brightly and glancing at me. Nodding curtly in reply I sit still and force myself not to fidget with anything.

Taking in the filing cabinets and bookshelves behind the woman I skim across some of the book titles before she makes what sounds like a noise of appreciation. Looking at her she glances up at me, ‘A masters degree in criminology?’ She says with her eyebrows raised.

‘That is correct ma’am’ I reply, trying to contain my nerves. Feeling perspiration start to bead on my forehead my knee starts to bounce up and down quietly.

Placing my portfolio down she tilts her head to the side, brown eyes twinkling with barely suppressed amusement. ‘Are you... nervous Ms Dale?’ She says before using her hand to prop her chin up.

Chuckling nervously I slowly answer ‘Is it that obvious?’ Smiling sympathetically at me she replies ‘The corner of your mouth is twitching and judging by the continuous, but light thuds I can only presume one of you knees is jolting up and down. You also have perspiration forming above your lip and at your hair line leading me to believe you are indeed, nervous’.

Raising my eyebrows at her statement I shrug, ‘yeah okay I’m a little nervous’. Watching her smile widen she laughs before going back to my portfolio. ‘Tell me Ms Dale, why do you want this job?’ She suddenly pipes up, her face serious.

‘All my life I’ve wanted to make a difference, to help the people around me and I believe the best way to do that is to join an organisation dedicated to it’ I reply simply, getting more comfortable by the second. Nodding in approval she moves her finger down the page before stopping.

‘It says here your father was an officer, is that correct?’ Nodding swiftly in reply I listen as she continues ‘could you tell me a bit about him?’ Clenching my jaw I nod again before speaking up. ‘He was a police officer for 14 years, he’s the one that got me into the whole justice side of things. He’d bring me to the gun range and teach me everything he knew until one day my aunt arrived at our house saying both my parents had been killed’. I finish my voice slightly hoarse with emotion.

Nodding at me I watch her continue to flip through the pages, scanning my degree and what not.

After she asks me a few more questions she smiles and closes the portfolio. ‘You should receive a call within the next 24 hours with my decision. Thank you for coming in’ she concludes.

Nodding at her I thank her back, ‘thank you so much for the opportunity, if I happen to move onto the next stage just know I’ll be working to the best of my ability’.

Pushing a strand of hair behind my ear I stand up and walk to the door, twisting the cool knob I glance at the blonde lady waiting outside who motions for me to follow her back to the waiting room.

Walking down the empty corridor I swiftly walk to the door located at the other end of the waiting room. The one that will led me back to the lobby.

Not glancing at anyone I turn the knob and make my way out. Now I can’t wait to get home to Enchilada.

Pushing my key into the lock I lightly kick my apartment door open and hear Enchilada’s exciting yaps. Scooping the fluffy black and white fur ball up I cuddle him to my chest before making sure the door is shut and slipping my black flats off.

Wiggling my toes I pad across the cold tile floor to the kitchen.

Glancing at the mismatch photos stuck around the simple area I smile at the one of me and Rachel.

We’d just gotten our hair done with loads of feathers and to be honest I loved them. They looked gorgeous in my dirty blonde hair and her brown locks.

Staring at the slightly crumpled picture I take in the bustling background filled with people and then take in the details of Rachel’s face, the slight laughter lines staining the area around her brown eyes, the small star tattoo near her eyebrow and her small nose ring.

Biting my lip I look at her slightly crooked smile which I always teased her about, what I’d do to see that smile again. Blinking slowly I look away.

But she was taken away from me.

Feeling Enchilada wiggle I snap out of my daze and place him down on the ground before opening the cupboard and taking out one of his treats.

Feeling his small paws against the back of my legs I smile as he yelps excitedly. Glancing over my shoulder at him I smile slightly before turning around and crouching down.

‘Have you been a good boy Lada?’ I ask him holding the treat out of his reach with one of my eyebrows raised.

Watching him fidget briefly he barks before sitting down. ‘Of course you have!’ I coo allowing him to take the treat from my grasp.

Smiling contently I run my hand through his fur lightly as he chews on the end of his prize. Letting out a short yawn I shake my head and stand up, stepping over Enchilada.

Ambling down the short hall I stumble into my bedroom and strip off my formal clothes before pulling my drawer open and taking a pair of yoga pants out before searching for a sports bra.

With both in my grasp I quickly slip them on before hunting down my runners. Where the hell did they find themselves? Searching through my small art studio which happens to be the the mini guest room where I paint, I come up empty handed and move onto the cramped sitting room with my it's one couch covered in pillows and colourful throws.

Getting down on my hands and knees I plaster my face to the ground and look under the couch. Scanning left to right I let out a shout of triumph when I spot them. Pulling the grey shoes out I smirk to myself.

I will always find you my shoes. You cannot hide from me.

Laughing at the weird things I say to myself I walk back down the hall to my room and manage to find a clean pair of socks.

Pulling them onto my cold feet I then slip the shoes on and tie the laces up. Grabbing my AirPods I scowl at them slightly first, they look so ridiculous but are so damn handy. No wires.

Making sure they’re connected to my phone I turn on my running playlist before securing my phone in my armband and holding the AirPods in my left hand.

Walking back towards the front door Enchilada trots at my heels. ‘Sorry boy but you can’t come’ I say over my shoulder before grabbing the keys and slipping out the door quickly so he can’t slip through the gap.

Locking it I try the handle to make sure it’s definitely secure before putting my AirPods in. Placing the lone key in a tiny hollow above my door frame I make sure it’s out of sight before turning around and glancing at the elevator.

Let’s take the long way. Passing the elevator I jog down the flights of stairs to start my daily run. Making sure I don’t miss a step I concentrate fully on my feet. As I get closer to the lobby I jog straight to the double doors and watch as Edward pulls one open having spotted me.

Edward’s the sweet middle-aged man who lives opposite me with his shaggy blonde hair and brown eyes.

Thanking him as I jog past I listen to ‘River by Eminem, feat. Ed Sherran’ as it comes on. Mouthing the words I start to speed up, adrenaline pumping through my veins. Quietly pounding the ground I run along the slightly busy street towards the park.

Breathing in and out in quick spurts I push myself to go faster as the gates of the park come into view. Falling into my usual routine I start to run my favourite trail with the remix of Demi Lovato’s ‘Tell Me You Love Me’ song playing. Perfect.

Running in time with the beat I pass some joggers but don’t slow down as sweat starts to build up along my hairline and drip down my back. After a few minutes I slow down a touch and mentally slap myself in the face for the second time today.

How do you expect to be an FBI agent if you can't even keep a steady pace? Push yourself!

Wanting to bite my own head off I continue to run, keeping that steady pace.

Around 1800 words, and approximately 8 pages.
