The roommate

Lee Nari POV

No way, no freaking way. Why is this happening to me?! Of all the people in the world, I could roommate with it has to be him. I let myself fall on to my new bed. Fifteen minutes into my new life here on campus and I already want to go home.

“Ughh, if only I didn’t want this so bad,” I cry out in frustration. I stare at the white ceiling. It looks so plain and in a way endless. I suddenly realise I might look at this ceiling quite a few times. I am after all going to be looking at it every night before closing my eyes and falling asleep. After some time has passed, I’ve calmed down and sigh heavily. Maybe this isn’t so bad, I think to myself. It’s not like I’m with him all day, every day. I have class and then he’ll probably just be with his friends all the time. The last one is more of a hope.

“Just keep your mind positive, this school is great, it’s your dream,” I remind myself. Overall there are more pros than cons. I’m in one of the best universities in the world: Seoul National University, I didn’t have to pay since I got a scholarship and my dorm room is amazing. I was a little surprised when I walked in here the first time. When you first walk in there is a kitchen to your right, coloured mostly in greys and beige colours. It looks quite modern and there is an island. There are stools up against it as well as a table on the left. On the other side of the big open space is a sofa area with a working desk. The sofa looks so comfortable I might get tempted to sleep in it. What I was most surprised about though was the flatscreen which is stuck to the wall. This is way better than I could’ve hoped for. In the middle of the room on the right wall is a door, which opens up to a hallway. A little one where the bedrooms are. My room, his room and a bathroom connecting the two of them. Great, just great. I’ll have to share a bathroom with that jerk. I’ll have to remember locking the door at all times. The best thing about this studio flat is my bedroom, it is amazing. It’s not too big and not too small, just perfect. I’ve already occupied the shelf with my books and hung up posters from my favourite bands. With my black bedsheets and pillows I’m sure I’ll be able to make this place homely. There’s also a desk in my room, which I’m grateful for, then I don’t have to work in the living room or in my bed. I go on a treasure hunt in my suitcase looking for something very dear to my heart. After a while I finally find it. It’s a photo of me and my best friend Min-Ji. I put it on my desk and smile a little.

If only Min-Ji were here with me. She has always kept me in a positive mood. I don’t even know how we became friends. From afar we would seem as opposites, but we stick together like glue. That is, we have until now. Min-Ji went to study abroad in America, in NYU. Her parents are really rich, owning one of the biggest companies in South Korea and against Min-Ji’s will bought her entry to the school. She hates being one of those kids who doesn’t have to work hard to get anything, I can’t understand her. I would give anything to be able to fall back on something if I were to fail. If she makes mistakes, she can use money to fix her problem and I guess that’s what she hates. This is why I was so surprised those seven years ago when Min-Ji walked up to me and started talking. I remember thinking: Oh no she’s going to diss me, isn’t she. I thought she was going to make fun of my clothes or the fact that I had no friends but instead of becoming one of the popular brats in school, who worry about guys, cake their faces and wear clothing to school I’d wear to a party, she picked me. And since then we’ve been inseparable.

I finish unpacking my things and decide to try and venture out again into the living area. I open my door and walk as casually as I can. Before I go through the door from the hallway into the living space I catch a glimpse inside. As I thought there he is, lying on the couch on his phone, acting like he doesn’t have a care in the world, maybe he doesn’t. I bite my lip trying not to get angry, but he’s getting on my nerves. The way he’s splattered on the couch, trying to look laid back and cool, annoys me. I take a deep breath and walk, calm and collected into the kitchen and get a glass of water.

“Well hello there sunshine,” I tense and turn around. He has stood up and is now looking at me with a smirk tilting his head to the side. He runs his hand through his hair.

“My name is Nari and you know it,” I say grinding my teeth. I don’t know how he does it, but just that one line made me feel like taking that smug smile and ripping it off his face.

“Awh is Lee Nari perhaps feeling a little angry?” He says in a voice you use when talking to babies. “Does my little angel want a hug?” He opens up his arms, smiling and walks up to the island.

I take a step back involuntarily, “I plan not to hug Satan until I die.” I say flatly and turn around. I grin a bit, proud of my comeback.

“Call me Nari,” I turn back again and look him in the eye to tell him that I’m serious. He blinks and smiles a little, clearly amused at my frustration. He then sighs and seems to give up on whatever he was trying to do.

“Alright Nari, mind to pass me a glass of water?” He leans on the counter, now much too close to me. The way he is talking is so different to a second ago that it’s like he flipped a switch. Caught off guard I drop my comeback and quickly go make it for him. I hand it to him and with that, he turns around and waltzes into his bedroom leaving me behind confused. I quietly drink the rest of the water and blink in confusion. I for sure thought he was going to say something snarky or call me something else to annoy me. The four years that I’ve known Jeon Jungkook has he never done anything remotely considerate. At least not to a nobody like me.

That’s right, this new roommate of mine is not somebody I met this minute, no. I am rooming with the most popular, ignorant guy from high school. Jeon Jungkook.
