Fascinating
"With the sheer amount of books to pick from, this author did an excellent job selecting not only a title, but writing a description for his book that caught my attention out of the rest of the stories on the website. Addressing topics regarding the fluidity of sexuality in a matter of fact way, the author has created a futuristic science fiction story line reminiscent of George Orwell’s Brave New World for the modern reader. The current social feelings toward non-traditional thought in regards to gender identity and sexuality give depth to this otherwise short novel. Typically I find books that switch between character’s stories disconnected and tiresome to read, but the author employed this strategy well and was able to tell the story successfully from multiple character’s eyes. As a book tackling gender identity and conformity might be, I found the pronouns difficult to understand at the beginning. I am used to speaking and thinking only in two genders, male or female, so the use of gender-less pronouns made the book feel choppy and difficult to read until I got further in the story and began to get into the rhythm of what I was reading. This is not a negative critique, rather an observation regarding how ingrained binary thinking is within myself. As with Brave New World, or other science fiction novels, additional vocabulary describing aspects of society were also difficult to understand initially. This difficulty also lessened as I continued to read, drawn in by the plot. Contrary to what some might believe is implied by the title, this book is far from pornographic, instead tackling difficult issues with regards to sexuality and gender in a very tasteful yet descriptive manner. I’m not entirely sure how this platform of writing and editing is supposed to work, but I think this book has great potential, either edited to add more detail and description, allowing for greater understanding earlier in the book, or simply as is reminding me of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451’s shorter storyline. I recommend this book to anyone interested in futuristic stories, or those willing to read about difficult topics regarding social justice. I greatly enjoyed this story and would be interested to read more from this author."
