"The first thing that jumped out at me ..."but then my heart broke and I was left heartbroken' or some such. That is redundant. You only need one of those because you're repeating the same statement. I kind of want to go paragraph by paragraph and 'fix' things I see like that but I don't want to appear to be harsh on the author. There is a lot of good here and I think you're a good storyteller; it just needs help with clarity, syntax, and formatting."
