Chapter 1
Mel’s POV
Saturday 6 a.m.
Mel couldn’t lay there a minute longer. She was too excited because today she and Eli are flying to Mexico. For some fun in da sun.
She hadn’t slept a few hours tops, so she got out of bed and tiptoed to the bathroom, trying not to wake anyone. She figured she could get a shower first.
She was sharing a room with Eli’s baby sister.
Then she heard growling, a little snarl. What the hell she thought as she tried to listen to which way the sounds were coming. Mel thought it sounded like a wounded dog to herself.
When did Eli get a dog? He doesn’t own a dog stupid, she told herself.
She looked over at Sammy and realized she was the one that was groaning and the snarling, it looks almost like she had a nightmare, the way she was thrashing around.
What the fuck was Mel’s first thought.
Sammy, she whispered, but all she got back were moans. Should she check on her?
Yes stupid she answered herself. But Eli’s the doctor, well almost a doctor. He’s going to college in the fall to be a doctor. Yeah, I’ll get Eli she thought to herself.
Sammy, “it’s me, Mel, are you okay? Do you need me to get you some water? Sammy, she whispered again as she reached out to feel her head for a fever. She’s burning up. She leaned her head up to my hand as I quickly snatched it away. I don’t need the flu, not now, not on my vacation time.
Hand sanitizer here I come, I know I got some in my bags down in the entryway.
Sammy shot up in the bed with white eyes that looked cold, It freaked me out, and her body language told me to run, so I ran but I tripped on a fucking throw rug at the end of the bed, she caught me and was pulling me to her trying to bite me. I wanted to hold her off, but she was stout. Foaming at the mouth almost like she was a rabid dog
I’d seen rabid dogs, and this wasn’t a mad dog. She was a ten-year old out for my flesh.
"She’s a fucking zombie,” I realized. That’s when I screamed bloody murder, not caring if I woke the whole damn neighborhood.
She growled louder as she tried to bite me.
Grabbing a lamp off the dresser by the door with my free hand I brought it back and smashed on Sammy’s head, knocking her out, or I killed my best friends sister, either way, I’m leaving.
I grabbed the door knob finally getting it opened running out in the still dark hallway, only to find Eli with a bloody baseball bat in his hands with tears streaming down his face.
I killed them; I killed them all...
I killed my parents.
“He cried. I killed them, Mel. I had to; he tried to explain through his tears.
Mom tried to eat me, He cried then he looked at me as he screamed look out....
Don’t turn around just come to me, Mel.
So I run to him past closed doors in the hallway. When I got to him I seen why he wanted me to run, Sammy was up and hungry for flesh.
Poor Eli had to kill his baby sister. I watched in horror as he slammed the bat into her head like an Atlanta Braves player slamming a home run, but this was real life then I saw her hit the floor, I realized this was fucking for real I wasn’t dreaming.
Oh my God! What in the fucks going on Mel?
Never hearing Eli cuss Mel’s brain started going into overdrive.
I don’t know but we need to go, we need to get the hell out of here Eli.
I need to check on my mom Mel responded in a weak voice.
Grab your bag it looks like we are leaving earlier than we thought Mel told him.
Still, in her pajamas she grabbed some photos of Eli’s family on her way down the stairs, he may want them later on.
Getting down the stairs was easy. Getting outside was another story, it was utter chaos. People were up and running or fighting to survive as we moved to my little white beamer.
Someone tried grabbing the bat out of Eli’s hand, but he snatched it back and slung it in the backseat, get the fuck on man.
“Please help me the man asked?
“Please. It’s my wife she’s been bitten. “I need to protect myself the guy pleaded.
“I’m sorry we can’t help you Eli spit out.
Damn, I’ve never seen Eli like this, but he never had to kill before either.
