The Dock
I stagger around the ports after work. “I hate my stupid job.” I’m now unemployed.... and now it’s raining. I groan as I think that it is officially my worst night ever. The town looks gray as the rain falls. It starts to get heavier; I pick up my pace to get out of the rain, but something stops me. “Is.... someone there?” I think I see a silhouette out by the dock. I squint my tired eyes to see movement. “Who is-” I begin to walk over in their direction. Who would be at the docks at this time of day. All the fishermen are gone, so why? I get over there when I see him. I kid in his twenties standing there. He inhales, then out of nowhere and with all his might he yells. He yells so loud that his body trembles, and mine as well. My eyes widen and my world turns to nothing but colors. The rain glows as it hits every color, and with every hit a colorful splash shows itself. My eyes glisten as these colors hit me all at once, and I can’t help but look at this boy.
After he finishes yelling he falls into the water. I panic and rush to save him. My world starts to go back to gray as I run towards him. The light! I dive in, and opens my eyes to see a blinding light. The ocean becomes a beautiful blue with sparkles and streaks of different colors. It was magnificent. I look to see him again. His eyes were on nothing but me and his face was flushed. I jolt when I realize I had my hands holding him and I let go, but he takes my hands. He pulls himself closer and our noses touch. He smiles and I feel a little embarrassed. I feel us move around as the moon shoots through the water, making the water bright. The moon’s reflection hits the boy’s face and you can see his freckles as they crowd his face. My heart starts to feel funny and I awkwardly smile. It’s almost like we are in a dance as me slowly float it the moonlight. I can’t help but be entranced, and I lose myself in the moment.
We submerge from the ocean’s grasp and I see his drenched hair drip the water. I get a little nervous as he snickers. We get out and sit on the dock, soaked to the bone. We both look at each other, and laugh at our situation. I stop and look at him as he looks at me, still smiling. “I’m Matthew. And you are.” My face reddens. “I’m.... Phillip.” He touches my hand. “Nice to meet you, Phillip.” We talk a little and I end up taking him home with me.
I wake up and see the bright sun. I look to see no one. Was it a dream? Wait.... a note? I open it.
