In the city called the Big Smoke or Toronto the real name of it, the criminal activity is rampant especially at night. But one man named Hank Prosperity on the secret Night Beat unit of division 50 in the downtown area of the city. He was on the force for five years now, still learning the tricks of the trade. He is partnered with a female detective named Rebecca Perry Furtado, a Caucasian white female in her late 20’s, cherry red hair. In her childhood she was nicknamed Red Velvet because of her hair color. Both still learning about each other’s personality and crime solving style.

Hank was a man of color that grew up in the west end from the Lansdowne and Queen area to the Lansdowne and Dupont area where eventually grew up and went to school. His parents split up in his early teens because of issues, but he longed to find his old man one day. Anyway, he liked detective work and crime solving that’s why he wanted to be a cop, always dressing casual him and Rebecca in her blouse.

In Rebecca’s Portuguese culture, families are always tight, so on occasion the family check up on her to see how she doing. They traveled to the Azores, a Portuguese island chain in the Atlantic to see grandparents. Anyway, at 50th division, Chief Saunders had case for them in the night. “Good night team” said Chief Joe Saunders. “I hope you all had a good daytime nap” he said. He wanted the team to patrol the streets for trouble. “Guess I have to load up on coffee” the young man, Shawn Hartley said, a rookie cop.

“Do that Hartley” replied Saunders. Hank and Rebecca were teamed up again to do night patrol. “Prosperity always gets teamed with the ladies” joked Matt Ruiz, another cop. “Well Matthew, are you jealous” said Hank. Matt was silenced there, as he and Hartley patrolled the east section of city. Hank and Rebecca to the west and downtown. In the police cruiser with Hank at the wheel driving west on Queen, they talked. “Thank you for standing up for me up back there at the station” Rebecca said.

“No problem, just some immature jerk” said Hank of Matt. “A robbery of a coffee shop on Bloor and Bathurst, close to 5k stolen” said the radio dispatcher. “Looks like we’re on the case” said Rebecca. “Yeah we are” said Hank. The Night Beat begins with Hank and Rebecca on their first beat of the night in the big city of Toronto.

9:40 pm:

At the coffee shop in the Bloor and Bathurst area, Hank and Rebecca asked the store employees who were shaken up what happened. “They came at us with guns and were in ski masks” said one employee of Robust Cup. “When we’re about to close at 9pm, two masked men came in here and demanded to give money to them about 5k ($5,000)” said one female employee.

The baristas did what the robbers demanded but some of the bills had a red dye on them that exploded on contact rendering the money useless, but had a tracking dye on them. “That’s when we called you cops. The red dye as a tracker on it so you two can find it” said the barista. “Red tracking dye? Have you guys gone high tech?” Hank questioned. To their surprise, the red dye left a mark on the sidewalk on the south side.

“I see the red dye stain and it stopped on the end of the sidewalk” Rebecca said. “Did you see the color of the getaway vehicle?” Hank asked. The employees said it was a grey colored sedan, 4-door Mazda 2004, stolen. “OK, we’re on it” said Rebecca. “By the way, can I have one cup of joe to go?” said Hank. “Prosperity, do we important matters to attend to first?” Rebecca said. “Becky, I know that, just need caffeine fix first” said Hank. The baristas brew two cups of coffee for them and they left.

In the squad car, the both of them pursued them. “Well, you happy now?” said Rebecca. “Yes, I am. Now let’s find those thugs” said Hank. Along Bloor, they heard over the radio, a hold up of a ticket collector at St. George Station, Bedford Avenue entrance. “We got them, call for backup” said Hank. “50th division, we have the two suspects at St. George Subway station, a holdup in progress” said Rebecca.

10:25pm

Both of headed to St. George station where they saw the stolen grey Mazda sedan car outside the entrance. Both went downstairs where they saw the thieves hold the ticket collector in his booth. “Don’t move, 50th division, night beat team” said Hank, introducing themselves with the gun in his hands. “So you cops call yourselves the Night beat team” the robber said, holding a gun at the collector. Subway trains had stopped at the station, passengers remained inside by security. “Well you have two lives to worry about” said the second robber having a young female at gunpoint pregnant. “Please save me, don’t want to die” said the woman.

“You two don’t have to do this, Paul Malone” Rebecca said, doing research on the two robbers on the computer. “How you two know our names?” said Malone. “Through by portal"> the net, scan the dye with my smart phone and trace the mark here” said Hank. He demanded the two to drop the weapons. “2 against two, good odds” said the second one nicknamed Scratch. Just then, more police showed up.

“Put down the guns, Night beat division” Matt demanded, with Shawn at his side. Paul Malone pushed the collector aside and about to fire when Rebecca drew her gun and shot Paul in his right shoulder blade, forcing him to drop his gun on the floor. Scratch (real name Jesse Waters) pushed the woman towards the open turnstiles to the team when he ran downstairs when Saunders came up and decked him, being undercover.

“Can’t let you all have the fun” he joked. The team got them up and handcuffed, bringing them to their squad cars. “That was amazing” said the woman. “Yeah, I thank you cops for saving us, free rides on the transit system for life for you all” said the collector thanking them. They got the stolen money to bring back to the station so the Robust Cup baristas get some of their money back the next day.

5:55am

At 50th division, the night was ending. “OK, good work you four on your first assignment” said Saunders. “No problem, Chief” said Hank. Hank, Rebecca, Matt, and Shawn went to their lockers to pack their guns in the locker. The employees of Golden Bucks got their money back in the morning. Hank and Rebecca went home for the day to their apartment in the mid-town area.

“Hank, we did well for our first case” said Rebecca. “Yes, Becky, we have and there will be more where that came from” replied Hank. And so the Night beat 50th division was formed.
