Soon after getting connected to Pearl, her mother and her grandmothers relationship the Author then plays with the reader's feelings with the bad news for Pearl's vision. "I'd love to see this book in the hands of a middle school language arts class. A wise story of a teenager as she struggles to overcome the difficulties of her impending blindness. This contemporary story might be more relatible to teens than reading about Helen Keller. The supporting characters are strong and complementary, particularly Katharine who is Miss Popularity at school as she tries to hide her unhappiness. With Pearl's help, she discovers more about herself, worries less about peer approval, and becomes her own person while Katharine gives Pearl insight into what it's like to be a teenager, which opens up Pearl's world. The imagery is excellent, such as Pearl's painted walking stick, each color representing a different emotion. These colors provide an additional tool for teens, other than smiley faces, since most middle school students have difficulty identifying their emotions, Pearl's family .dynamic and the romance round out the story."
