1-Charles
Have you ever had that one dream where the girl you are insanely in love with realizes she loves you back? Or one about your dog getting hit by a car, then comes back to life and eats you alive? Perhaps you’ve had one like the one I’m living?
I open my eyes, travelling alongside cornfields and farms with cute little cows and horses grazing on the grass. Music is playing, sounding poppy and energetic, bass pulsing, vibrating the insides of what seems to be an automobile. The air is warm and windy with the windows open. “You finally awake, sweetheart?” I can hear Mum saying cautiously and faintly in her thick British accent. Looking around, I figure we are moving somewhere, seeing that there are piles of suitcases belonging to my mother and me. Suddenly, I feel a rattling shake my bones. And some more faint yelling…
“Charles! You’ll be late for school if you don’t get up right this instant! Get your arse out of your bed! I’m going downstairs, and you better be up in less than two minutes!”
Mum’s voice cuts through the waves of my sound sleep. Recognition passes over me as I bolt up, already searching my drawers. “Be down in a minute, Mum!” I yell down the stairs, jumping into a pair of jeans. I take a look at my watch, rushing to shove a shirt onto my torso, walking into my bathroom.
I run down the stairs minutes later, carrying a boulder on my back, the thing that is supposed to be a backpack weighing me down, grabbing my coffee and swing the front door open. I get into my car, hoping I won’t spill the hot liquid on my expensive polo, starting the car and speeding down the road towards school.
As I pull into the student parking lot, I hit the curb, bumping my coffee. Thankfully, it ends up not splashing on me, but on the floor mats I installed in my car yesterday. Great thinking, Mum! I try to send to her telepathically. I park, and struggle climbing out of my car with my boulder attached to my back. Seconds later, I'm lying on my back, staring at the sky. Paper whipping around me, I sit up, finally able to breathe right again. This girl is on her knees, rambling as she looks into my eyes. Wow, her eyes are so pretty... I can't help but think as I start piling papers. This girl is now talking about how embarrassing this is and how much it will hurt her reputation. "I can't believe this! I just wanted to start off the year I take over the school on a good note!" and continues mumbling. It feels like it's been hours since we started picking up paper, and as I hand her the last sheet of paper, our hands meet, and a shock rips through my veins.
Maybe this year won't be so bad...
