Today was a cold and rainy day. This Friday had really awful weather that made you feel lousy. Lily went to school as she did every day. But that all changed when Lily came home from school.

After school, Lily got on the bus and rode home. When she got home there was an ambulance at her house and everyone was in a state of panic. Lily walked in and asked what was going on and her mother told her that her little sister, Brooklyn had been sick and was being rushed to the hospital just to make sure she was okay.

Lily and her family followed the ambulance to the hospital where Brooklyn was being taken. The doctor that they didn’t know what was wrong with Brooklyn, so they sent her to see a different doctor. Lily started to talk to her mom while they were waiting.

“Mom, is Brooklyn going to be okay?” Asked Lily.

“I don’t know sweetheart,” said her mom.

“Is there anything we can do?”

“Right now we just need to hope for the best.”

They were at the hospital for a very long time when the doctor finally came out to talk to Lily’s mom.“We cannot diagnose the problem with Brooklyn right now. We will transport her to the hospital in Boston,”

“Okay Thank you doctor,” said Lily’s mom.

Lily’s little sister was brought to the hospital in Boston. Lily’s family met her there and they waited for four hours to find out what was wrong with Brooklyn. Brooklyn was diagnosed with Leukemia. Leukemia is a type of cancer that makes it hard for your body to fight off infection because of the amount of white blood cells in your body. The treatment that Lily’s parents and the doctor chose was Chemotherapy because it could be done at their local hospital. The doctor would keep Brooklyn overnight for two nights to start the treatment, then they would go back home the day after and continue the treatment at the local hospital. The first step of the treatment is called Induction Therapy and would consist of four weeks in a hospital.

After the two overnights in the hospital were done the family headed home and Brooklyn continued her treatment at the local hospital. Lily wanted to keep her sister’s illness a secret. She was worried about people treating her differently if they knew about her little sister, so she didn’t even tell her best friend, Skylar.

Lily couldn’t sleep that night before she went to school the next morning. She was thinking about what she would say to Skylar when she asked her what she was doing all weekend and why she hadn’t responded to any of her texts. Lily spent all night thinking about what her story was going to be, then she decided she would say that her family went on a short trip to Boston for a family vacation. Lily thought this was a believable story even though Lily hated the idea of lying to her best friend. Lily thought she had to lie for her and her sister’s sake. Lily still couldn’t sleep even after she made up that story and she realized it was because she would have to lie to Justin as well along with everyone else in the school. Then she thought, “If my sister is going to be in the hospital for a month what am I going to say to Skylar when she comes over to do homework?” Lily realized that she could just say that she was at after school care which she used to be most days after school anyways. There was still more bothering Lily that night. She realized sometimes she was going to have to leave her studying with Skylar to go to the hospital and she would need to have a story for that as well. She decided that for the first few times she would just say she had an appointment. “But that will only work for some time I am going to need another story,” she decided she would say she had a family dinner out at a restaurant. After Lily figured all of this out, she went to sleep.
