Summary

Dear Reader, I wrote this book to show you that anything is possible. The novel has a fragmented structure but I dare say that it forms a harmonious and inseparable whole. The cycling-orientated parts of the text aren’t long-winded, firsthand descriptions so as to suit those not tempted by the cycling life and terminology. I decided that otherwise I would disturb the pace and obscure the story. Despite the first person narrative of the story, I’ve tried to keep my presence in the text to a minimum and the focus – on the faces and situations around me. Not unlike standing in the eye of the storm and writing only about the near and far whirlwinds of clouds. And another thing. The storytelling is choppy. Much like the rhythm of the Internet. That’s how I pictured its skeleton, I liked it and fleshed out the body. I believe that the finished image is even dressed in modern clothes. Each separate dance can take place at any given time in the story. But I have danced them in the order presented below in the text. In my eyes, they make a well-orchestrated ball night only when played in this order. Every person might see it differently.

Bicycle kiss

Spas Hristov

The work before you was sent to and judged by BNT’s television show The Manuscript. I wrote this for the show and I’m satisfied with my participation. A look at the cover should be enough to make the connection obvious. When the 72 participants were narrowed down to 24, I didn’t make the cut. Personally, I cannot kick the text even one notch higher. I realize that it needs an editor, correctors and a number of other diligent workers to slave over it before it becomes a product ready for sale. With the help of that whole army of repairers it will attract less critique over stylistic and grammatical errors. BUT! For me, the AUTHOR is at the heart of everything. And no author can be expected to plant the cotton, weave the cloth, take the measurements, sew the clothing and then embrace all that critique over a crooked button. The client has the right to ask for a perfect product. Every stylist/writer in their right mind hires other people to do their dirty work. I present the text to you just as it was written for the show. I talked to my editor and he said: “Look, this isn’t THE NOVEL, it’s THE MANUSCRIPT. If you are getting it published, I might join in.” For now, I present it to your critical eye the way it was created, in its raw, original form.
