Prologue

I slowly run my finger over the smooth hilt and down the edge of the hunting knife in my pocket. It’s cold steel blade pressing against my leg through the fabric. I carefully shift my weight as I try to get comfortable on the cold roof tiles. I stare at the brightly lit room less than a hundred meters away. I feel my attention sharpen as the silhouette of a girl appears in the brightly lit room. She moves around the room, her shadow pulling on clothes and throwing things around the room. I hear a bang followed by muffled thuds and I cock my head to the side.

She must be moving the furniture around. I remain crouched on the edge of the roof as the light in the room turns off. I slowly stand up after a few minutes and walk back up the slippery roof tiles. I hesitate on the ridge of the roof, I thought that I saw the curtains twitch and her face appear. I stand staring at the dark window for a few moments before shrugging it off and adjusting my mask. My silver claws glinting in the moonlight. I crack my knuckles before jumping clean off the roof. My silky, black cape trailing behind me like a billowing shadow. It doesn’t matter what happens. My number one priority is that she doesn’t discover my identity. No one can. Ever.
