Chapter 1
She used to believe that some things are better left unsaid. With this theory she could do things despicable to all moralities one would strive towards. Her name also described a great personality trait she would need to adapt to the evil world she would call home. “Dziki” the polish word meaning fierce. This was an unfamiliar name for a girl growing up in Cape Town. Kids at school used to refer to her as Ziki. Ziki hated school, why would she like it if she knew she had to obey rules?
She is a firm believer in education though. She used to switch on their flat screen and carefully watch the arrows on Bloomberg. Wondering why they changed colors and moved up or down. Ziki was also a 'numbers' girl - never had problems counting big amounts of cash or remembering digits. A zero, she had zero tolerance for weaknesses and falling in-love. Who would marry an infamous drug dealer's daughter? This phenomenon could not be hers.
Ziki has the perfect life. She wakes up to the vision of Table Mountain, this is definitely an Instagram worthy view. Her dad would kill for her and her mother's absence is not missed, or is it? She drives a Mercedes and moves with speed. She has a killer body and loads of money. She has been accepted to the University of Cape Town to further her studies in economics. Young Ziki should not feel worried about the next step towards her future.
Luna like the moon. Luna and Dziki loved spending time together and would unknowingly spend a lifetime knowing each other. Luna was the daughter of Lionel, a very successful land developer. He used to be a nice guy. However dealing with these riches involved business meetings, alcohol and other substances. Luna would look at the moon wondering how much better a planet without an economy would be. Kind of like a world of peace. Where there is no need for wealth or aggression. Aggression. A key player in this story.
Luna and Ziki met at a brunch. Their families loved fine dining together on the Grey Goose mansion's patio. Luna's mother was a quiet lady with an impeccable sense of fashion. Lionel never allowed his wife to have a career though, such a feminist. Lionel liked having control over people. He would soon lose control.
Ziki's father was Antoni Kowalski. He made his fortune from filling gaps in the market. Antoni was a ladies man. He always had attractive secretaries and believed there is no God, you are your own god. He met his wife, Dziki's mother, when he came to South Africa in the 80's. She was a singer with a radiant skin tone.
South Africa is known for it's lenient judicial system and dangerous cities. Antoni believed that his business would thrive in this environment and he was right. He had high-end clients and homeless clients. He is rich and smart but not emotionally intelligent at all. They had Ziki at a later stage, as a baby she knew money made the world go round.
Enough character sketches, human beings believe that circumstances can shape us. We also believe that we should not let circumstances form us. There's many famous people reminding us of this example, like Eminem. This story is not the next Eminem dream. These circumstances did form Dziki, a childhood filled with sad memories.
