Chapter 1

The dry leaves of autumn swept over the street like a wave falling on the shore. It was early hours of night at Spring Town. The street was empty with no living soul in sight. Yellow glowing streetlamps floored the street. The town folks were inside their houses, some preparing meals for dinner while others had already eaten their supper and were now sitting in front of their Television sets watching ‘Dancing With The Stars’ or some easy entertainment show.

Somewhere a loud thud of a heavy object landing on soft ground broke through the easy but queer silence the street had gone into.

It was Rebeca as she rolled over the well-mowed lawn of her house, and with the precision of a stealth artist she stopped herself and got up. She flicked off the mud that had collected over her shoulders and then rubbed the knee area of her jeans. She took a quick glance through the square window on the front of her house. In the living room sitting on the dark brown leather sofa, she could see her parents. Her father was wearing his favorite red snapback hat which gripped tightly to his thick, fat skull hiding his bald head, and he had his arm around her mother, hugging her close to him tight. She had her head neatly tucked in the area of his arm-pit.

The bright lights coming from the Television were being reflected in their eyes. They were sitting there like two people hypnotized by whatever special they were watching on the LCD screen, preoccupied enough to not notice their daughter had just sneaked out through the first-floor window of her room and was on her way to meet Jacob.

Standing beside the doors of a red-colored sedan was a sleek looking tall boy. He had numerous tattoos on his arms. One of them was of a snake over his left forearm which was drawn neatly and in thick black ink and the other was of a scorpion (drawn unerringly in brown, ready to sting) adorning his right forearm. He was wearing a blue colored shirt which was skin tight with its sleeves rolled over.

He took a wholesome drag of the cigarette, sucking all the air it could offer, and then slowly released the milky smoke through the corner of his lip, the smoke hiding his complexions as it made its way out.

Seeing a girl approaching him he threw away the cigarette with a flick of his fingers, the yellow flames from the lit end leaving a trail of ashes behind before disappearing.

“Five minutes late! Now give me my five dollars.” He said while putting out his palm in front of her. She playfully punched him in his chest and said “Oh! Shut Up.”

He wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her towards him. For a few seconds, they both stared at each other, their eyes telling the story of two souls madly in love.

Rebecca kissed Jacob on the cheek.

“Captain, what is the plan now.” She said.

Jacob pulled out his phone from the tight left pocket of his denim. His eyes went over the digital clock positioned on the top-left corner.

“We can go to the bar and dance the night away or, or we can stop by at Stephanie’s. She has her cousin over this weekend, and he always carries his stack with him.”

Rebecca pondered over the two-options, letting out an umm sound while thinking.

“We can go to Stephanie’s,” she said while swaying in his arms.

Jacob let loose a smile and said “Naughty Girl”. He hugged her tighter, this time pulling her close such that her lips landed on his. They made-out for a minute, with Jacob stealing all the sweet-tasting lip gloss Rebecca had so meticulously applied before leaving her house.

They got inside his red sedan and Jacob turned the key for ignition. The sound of the key turning, click, and that of the well-oiled engine purring welcomed itself.

Jacob turned on the radio and played with the knob till he heard a sweet melody coming over from his favorite rock-n-roll station. On the radio were Led-Zeppelin with their killer guitar riffs.

He backed the car out of the parking spot and drove in the direction of Stephanie’s house. The volume on the Led-Zeppelin was maxed out as two high-school sweethearts with raw energies of the youth were heading into the night of careless fun. Not knowing that this night was going to get ugly.
