May the Blessings Be, with you, am going to tell you about the most important book you will ever read. And it is not religious in nature. It is called the Dictionary. Now let me explain. We read everyday things like menu’s , directions on a map, fiction, non-fiction, biographies etc. There are approximately 5000 (five thousand) give or take words in the English language. George Carlin got that right in his joke about this. They are all contained within this dictionary. When we read our pay stub, bill statements, contracts (fine print, etc.), rules/regulations and such, we use these 5 thousand words, or at least some of them. If we do not understand a word that we come across while reading, we will not understand what we just read. We will forget everything after that misunderstood word. And until we go back to that word we did not understand, look it up and truly understand it’s meaning in whole, we will never understand what we read that book, contract, rule/regulation for that occasion. So carry an app that has this feature or carry a dictionary. If you are looking up a word that you do not understand and in the description of the word is a word that you do not understand, look that up too. If you do not understand the description of the word, you will not understand the word. At first this will seem like a rather large chore, but the end result is a better vocabulary, better understanding of words (perhaps even in some cases not require a lawyer to translate the “big words” for you, as you will be able to understand most of it, except for the legal terminology which requires someone who knows it. But you must be able to understand the words the “lawyer” tells you in “layman” terms.) and a greater understanding of how words work in day to day affairs. It may even help in not having misunderstandings or arguments, with regarding, to what you hear or speak to another. Our educational system should have a course or study of the dictionary, it would advance our educational system by light years and in the long run produce better learners. If we all understood the dictionary better it would greatly reduce warfare, intolerance, ignorance etc as we would have a better understanding of words and meaning. Anyways this is all up to you to do or not do. If you want change in your life then one must work towards it, this is a good start.
