BRUNETTE
He’s waking up in the car, you can see the trees flying pass through the window as they make it to their destination. They arrive, he’s at his school. His mother tells him “we’re here”. He replies “yeah i know” stretching waking himself up then looking out the window. He gets out about to make his way to the front doors but interrupted by his mother giving him his keys, he resumes. Before he gets to the door standing on the concrete steps he turns around and sees his mom pull off. He walks over to the outside lunch area, he stands there for awhile like he’s waiting for someone the he turns to the left of him and see a pink camo colored backpack sticking out the corner.
Walking toward that way he rubs his fingers through his nappy afro whispering to himself “oh”. He walks up behind the person and took the hood off. It’s a girl, his girlfriend. She fixes her curled hair from it being in her hood and him taking it off roughly. She muffs him “hey you gonna mess up my hair dumbass!” He says an acceptable sorry while telling her to keep it down. He then leans on the wall saying “so what you doin”? Before she could say anything someone comes up from behind him, his friend they call him Revro. A kid with curly hair even though his hair isn’t a good length for it and uses a rubber band to stretch it out. The boy punches him “ the fuck are you doing, that’s kinda suspect don’t come up behind me like that “. They dap up. Revro replying with his hands up with a sarcastic “ aight bro, scary”. He ignores it and turns back around to his girl, leans on the wall and crosses his arms. “what were you saying”? She rolls her eyes and starts picking under her sky blue nails that comes to a sharp point and are medium long. She says “don’t ask me anything if your not gonna listen”.
“ Sorry “ …
She replied “ you’re always sorry “.
It’s silent for a while its now nine in the morning, you can hear the birds chirping. They’re sitting at one of the tables, you can still see the sharpie marks on the tables because the janitors were too late to clean it before it dried. The boy realized they haven’t entered the school yet. He asks them both, “ so should we turn ourselves in, or stay out here and get eaten alive by these mosquitoes”? Smacking his neck. Revros too busy to reply since he’s looking at old memes on instagram. He looks over to his girl. She glares at him. “ what?“. He replies with a little anger “ what!“He gets up and walk towards a pole with a flag attached. It has words written on it.
Black Women In 2018 Are Not Brunettes!
He raises his left eyebrow with a curious look on his face. “ are black Women considered brunettes?. Some asian kid with a black skull cap that says has #Stay Woke on the fold says “sounds deep”... The boy turns and looks at him not listening to what he’s saying stares at his hat. “It’s fake” The boy says interrupting him. The kids replies “what the hat, does it matter”. “Anyway my names Zach.” The boy looks at him with a intimidating straight face. “Yeah whatever, why are you here shouldn’t you be in class?” Zach saying with a wide smile on his face “ it doesn’t concern you, you’re not the boss of me”. The boy combs his hands through his afro probably saying to himself he’s write about that. His girlfriends grabs his hand there’s a taco truck over there, she points over to a sketchy white truck with a “uno dos tacos” logo on it. It’s lunch time people start to come outside to the lunch area and sitting at their tables they’ve picked for their “cliques”. The boy thinks to himself was i really looking at that flag for that long, while being dragged to the taco truck.
They’re about to order. You can see the boy looking around eyes wide looking around thinking buying from it is a bad idea considering the name of the truck is pretty generic and a little. racist. His girlfriend is ordering now. She looks at the menu with her hand groping her chin. “Can i get a steak supreme with..” before she could finish the guy taking her order abruptly interrupts her with “sorry we don’t have any more steak. The boy looks at her with a smirk on his face. He says confidently “told ya”. She replies with some frustration in her voice “ told me what, you didn’t tell me anything”. He looks in the air “i did, in my head”. She refuses to reply in her opinion stupidity and tries ordering something else.
“Can I get a chicken supreme then”?
The person ordering replies “sure”.
She puts her hand out to pay the boy grabs her hand it saying “i got it”. Kissing her cheek. He digs in his coat pocket “how much is it”, two-fifty he says in his Mexican accent. He gives him the asked amount. His girl grabs his hand and stares at him with satisfaction in her eyes.
THE BELL RINGS .
The boy grabs her food and hands it to her. “You think we should go to class” he says to his girl. She replies “I’m gonna be lonely though” clenching his hand tighter. “But then you’ll miss school in the future” he replied. She lets out a pout, then accidentally lets out a burp. Embarrassed she covers her mouth. The boy lets out a quick chuckle. “How’d you burp you haven’t even eaten yet” he says. She decides to go to class because her friends convinced her to. The boy instead sat in an empty field grass mildly high with some bumblebees not bothering him. He has his earpods in listening to some alternative hip-hop the kind with a little R&B involved. It’s a vibe.
After a couple of songs he pulls out his earpods ands looks around, there’s some couple making out against the wall but he just ignores it. He’s looking for something that interests him but sadly fails. Wiping out his phone he turns it on and scrolls down Twitter looking for new albums that’s dropped. That also fails to occupy his time, he goes up inside the building eagerly looking for something to meets his desires. He decides to go into the gym room, there’s a ping pong table with some coaches playing on it. The first thing he thinks of is how he could get her to play with him. Before he figures that out he starts to play with the gym coaches beating them multiple times he felt confident that he could beat anyone who opposed him. They played for a while until classes were over. He rushes down the halls people looking at him like he’s crazy or mentally diseased. Finding his girlfriend he quickly drags her back down the halls to the gym room and introduces her to the pool table.
“Pool table, girlfriend-girlfriend pool table”.
She looks at him crazy “really, really you introduced the pool table to me first” says folding her arms. The boy shakes his head “yeah whatever, but like you down”. She looks at him with a you sure look “ i hope you know i’ve won tournaments in ping pong”. The boy laughs “ keyword won”. She replies with an aggressive tone in her voice “okay”, she picks up the paddle. The boy throws the ball up and takes the first hit over the net. She strikes back with a light hit, the boy can keep up with her for a while. Then she hits the ball with a lot force, the boy lets the ball fly past him. He shakes his up and down “okay, okay” he says with nerve in his voice. After a couple back in forth hits she hits it with some force again hitting so he misses it. “Emm two” the boy says. She hits it out again winning. She tells him jokingly “what’d I you you think you honestly had a chance”. He looks at him with an are you serious face, kinda confused with his eyebrows raised. He replies “why’d you do that” she puts a what do you mean face on.” I don’t blow you out in space invader in front of everyone”. He hints at the the guy behind which is zach from earlier. “Oh, was he there the whole time”. The boy just walks away from her throwing his paddle on the pool table. She sits there with a what is wrong with him face, you can tell that she’s thinking that why is he so angry it’s just a game. Her friends were watching they go over to her quoting
“He just being the lil bitch he is”.
Her other friend “what’s the problem with him a whiny bitch”.
She just looks at them and chuckles “yeah true he can be a bitch sometimes, i don’t babysit”. She feels a little bad because she wants to always be with him. The next few days the boy comes to school not talking to her, going to all of his classes, looking a bit unusual doing things he probably wouldn’t do. You can tell from his face that he misses her. Everyday before lunch by three lockers they walk past each other. Always taking a peek at each other before looking away. He sits at his lunch table he sits at everyday with his friend Revro, Zach too he always finds a way to invite himself to the table. Revro always asks questions like are you still dating or should you really be mad over that. Zach saying forget her and giving him false rumors like she’s meeting up with other guys. He always responds defending his side and as if he doesn’t care about what she does with a regrettable “i don’t care”. He gets on the bus home not calling his mother to pick him up because he doesn’t want her seeing his depressing face or not wanting her to ask how he and that girl is doing. The ride home and reminisced to back to when they first met, they met on a bus. A bus coming from a field trip to Great America. He thought he be partnered with his friend but instead was partnered with some random girl, which was her his soon to be girlfriend. On a walk to one of the rides it was a miracle she even chose to talk to him and doing it again and so on. He liked her, she liked him but she never really showed it with facial expressions but thinking back he never really did either.
She was a girl who was smart and funny but didn’t really think she was herself. Saying weird stuff to make her laugh and her responding with something two or three times dumb to make her laugh, but who always gets “weird and wise sometimes I could never be. She had beautiful black hair where it was cut straight to about the jaw-level with perfect bangs to the front, judging from the way she curled she was a take her time girl. We’re back on the bus now her face showed that she was having a good time with the boy. When they got on they sat in back row of the bus they started talking making jokes again. The time when everyone was asleep except a couple of other people who were either on their cell phones or making out the boy asked, can i tell you something serious. She replied with a comforting “mhm”. All of a sudden he’s telling her, her face is there and gone and there and gone as we gon under the orange lamps that a lines the side of the highway. Going on about love at first sight and what she thought about it about how it seemed like destiny meeting her. He knew that if he didn’t say anything then it’d be too late, it’d be especially too late if there was another. There’s no expression on her. At this point he’s just talking to lengthen the time where they live in a world where she hasn’t said yes or no yet. Before long he’s out of stuff to say, then she smiles and says “okay”. He doesn’t know what she means by it but to him it sounds vaguely positive. He would leave not to ruin the moment with his awkwardness but there’s nowhere to go because they’re on a bus. So he turns over and pretends that he’s asleep and before long he really is. He wakes up. Someone from a distance calls out for him, “aye boy, i left you something message me when you get a chance”. He turns over, in between his legs is a note with an username on it. He gets home, all that day he hesitates to text her. Thinking it’ll probably be some girls trying to make fun of him for even thinking he had a chance in the first place, or it could be evenly scary if it was the real thing. Later that day he texts it anyway. Somehow the girl already texted him she probably got it from someone he knows. He’s too scared to even open it. The boy doesn’t really know what he’s afraid of at this point, probably because he knows that this is something serious and there’s no other way out of it unless it’s being careful. They eventually started talking and as the “flirting” progress the girl asked the question he was afraid of all along. “so are we going out”. He stares at his phone he replied “yes”. They were a thing.
The bus stops, he arrived home.
