The Dawn of a New Day
What is the purpose of this world? I never got to learn. I know that people are always fighting, whether the fighting is between countries that are in war or two friends having a petty argument on what guy looks cuter. There is also the fact thousands of people die of gun violence. So world peace is out of the question. I don’t know what this world is about, but I know one thing. I can never escape this dark, maddening world.
My name is Jake Bagwell. I am fifteen, and I am about to start my first year in high school. Ever since I was thirteen, I hadn’t been able to leave my house.
It was because I tried to commit suicide. I tried to hide the fact that I was depressed and suicidal. I tried to hide it from my family, I tried to stop their worrying. I tried so hard to keep them in the dark about my problem, but my little sister managed to walk in on me putting a noose around my neck. That’s when she started to scream her lungs off until our butler, Steven, came and tackled me off the chair. He wouldn’t get his three-hundred-pound body off of me until my mom came running in. I swear next year we’re not giving him chocolates for Christmas this year, we’ll get him a gym membership or a personal fitness trainer.
I see things, things that are not real. I know they are not real, but they affect me, badly. These things are like a combination of animals and humans. They’re not like centaurs or mythical creatures that a child imagines, but these monsters like you would see in horror movies. They tell me things, and somehow they are always right about these things. These things come and go every now and then, but the one that stays with me the most is Night. Night is like a creature you would imagine would come in a nightmare. Night is the only creature that I’ve ever made friends with.
Before I tried to do “it,” I do remember someone. His name was Philip. Philip something. I forgot. He was my, “best friend,” as others would say. We had a strong connection. I did have feelings for him, but that dream would’ve never happened.
As a child, I always understood adult matters. Matters that normal children never understood. I understood that not all dreams came true, or as some would say, “not all suns rise.” I understood that not everyone got a happy ending. I knew that people who are not normal get cast aside, that it’s better to have power and looks than to have a personality.
When people look at me, they see a fifteen-year-old with brown hair and green eyes. When people look at me, they see an heir to a company that helps tons of people weekly, maybe even daily. When people look at me, they don’t see the scars that I hide. They don’t know the pain that I go through every day, every morning when I wake up. No one knows the pain that I go through every-
“JAKE!!!” I hear my sister, Jasmine, call. “MOM SAID THAT YOU NEED TO GET UP BEFORE YOU’RE LATE!!!!!”
I guess it's time to start the day.
