Chapter 1 - Strawberry Cafe

Another uneventful day, Rosalin thought as she sat in her office staring at her glass window. She loved seeing the way the raindrops poured against the glass and trickled down the surface. It was such a peaceful sight. The 25-year-old business women had everything a girl her age could dream of, a beautiful mansion, loving parents, a flourishing business. What more could anyone want? Well, that’s exactly what she didn’t know. But she knew one thing for sure, she wasn’t satisfied. Why did she feel that way? Why did she feel a void in her heart that never seemed to fill?

How she would trade everything she owned in a heartbeat to find that very answer!

She was brought out of her thoughts by the sound of her hungry tummy. She couldn’t remember the last time she had eaten a proper meal. She always tried to engross herself in her work that she neglected her diet despite her mother’s constant yelling.

She gets up from her seat, takes her handbag and heads towards the exit. Maybe she could stop by a nice Italian restaurant and have some delicious Riso. As she was reaching the exit she could hear the voice of her PA aka her best friend call her.

“Ro! Wait up!” The petite woman calls.

“Hello Em, I was just heading out for lunch”

“Oh, then let’s go. I know this great cafe just around the block that sells the most delicious cheesecakes in the country!”

Cheesecake! The word was enough to get Rosalin drolling. She forgot all about her riso and hurried after her friend, who seemed overly excited.

“Ok, but it couldn’t possibly be that good?! Better than the one we tried at the 7-star hotel?”

“Way better,” she says confidently.

Rosalin couldn’t believe her ears. The cheesecake she had eaten at the 7 star was the best she had ever had. It was a heavenly delight. Something better than that and from a small corner side cafe, it was hard to comprehend.

“We are here!” Emily chirps.

The cafe looked like a simple street cafe. But when she entered the cafe she was welcomed by the smell of chocolate and coffee. Two of the best combinations. What she didn’t expect was the feeling of warmth and the homily vibes she got from the place which was overwhelming.

She seemed transfixed at the spot and she was brought back by Emily pulling her towards an empty seat at the center.

“You just zoned out! Have you been here before?” Emily asks with a weird expression.

She had asked a simple question yet why was Rosalin finding it hard to get her words out. She has definitely not been to this cafe before yet the feel of the place was almost surreal.

“I....I...don’t...”

“Welcome to Strawberry cafe. I’m Kyle, how may I take your order ma’am?”

The deep English accent made Rosalin shiver. She immediately looked up to see the source and for a minute it was like the world had stopped. Never in her life had she seen such a beautiful specimen. The unique shade of grey orbs was longing to consume her whole. The Silky light brown hair and those full lips could please any woman. Why was she thinking of such vulgar fantasies over a mere server was beyond her. She had never felt such strong emotions towards anyone of the opposite sex. Just the thought of it was frightening.

“Ouch!” Rosalin says as Emily retrieves her hand after pinching her arm.

“Ro! You zoned out again! And why were you oogling Kyle? You didn't even hear him so I took the order. Somebody was having some naughty thoughts” Em says wriggling her eyebrows. Heat rushes to Rosalin's cheeks. She had just embarrassed herself and made someone uncomfortable. She made a mental note to apologize for her rude behavior.

“Are you ok Ro? You seem a little flustered”

“Hmmm...I don’t know Em. I think it must be the hunger that’s causing my weird behavior”

“Ladies here’s your chocolate cheesecake,” Kyle says placing the plate in front of Emily “and here’s our special strawberry cheesecake” placing the plate before Rosalin.

“How did you know this was my favorite?” Rosalin found herself asking that before she realized it.

“It’s either that I can read minds or your friend here knows what you like,” Kyle says playfully.

How stupid of her? Rosalin thought. Of course, Emily knew her but somehow she never recalled telling Em what her favorite flavor was. But then she let it slide since she didn’t want to think too much about the matter.

“Sorry about earlier Kyle, I tend to phase out sometimes”

“No worries love. Sometimes the past brings us memories that we wish to cherish” he says. There was a hint of sadness in his tone that Rosalin wished she could comfort.

What in the world has happened to her?! She is crushing on a guy who she just met.

She didn’t know why but she felt as if his words held a much deeper meaning.…
