My Brothers Best Friend

Chapter One...

Flash back

“Give it back Link!” I whined as my brothers friend dangled my new doll over my head just out of reach.

“Fine! But you have to get it from me, here. Take it.” Link held my doll out for me to grab. Looking at him curiously I went to reach it, just as my little fingers were about to grip the fabric of the dolls dress it was pulled out of my reach and I watched as it sailed across the room to where my brother Chase was waiting to catch it. This back and forth game went on for a good ten minutes.

“Give it back now or I’m telling mommy!” I threatened.

“You wouldn’t dare” my brother glared at me. Our eyes locked with one another. We heard the honk of my mother’s car pulling into the driveway signaling that she was home, looking out the window then back at my brother I made a mad dash for the door having both boys hot on my tail. I raced out the door and down the stairs, right when I was about to call out to my mother I was tackled from behind by Chase and Link, we tumbled down the hill having both of them land on top of me when we reached the bottom. Screams of pain erupted from my mouth as they climbed off of me. My mother ran over to see what all the commotion was about.

“What happened?” My mother said sternly as both boys stood with their heads to the ground, arms behind their backs. Mom crouched down to where I was still whimpering cradling my very obviously broken arm.

“We were just playing mom.. We didn’t mean for Hails to get hurt.. We’re sorry” Chase said to my mom who was still paying attention to me. She picked me up bridal style and carried me to the car, she placed me in the back seat and buckled me in.

“Go inside and get your sister’s blanket and her doll and meet me back here. I have to go get her health card and other paper work. Link sweetie are you staying the night or am I taking you home?” My mother had always had a soft spot for Link, no matter what him and my brother did to me. Link just nodded his head in response letting her know that he would be staying. She gave him a soft smile and motioned for him to get into the car beside me. Once my mother left Link walked over to where my now broken doll was laying on the ground. He picked it up only to have its head fall off and roll to the open car door. A few lone tears slipped out of the corners of my eyes as I looked up at him he looked so sad. He picked up my doll’s head and went to the garage and retrieved some duct tape and taped her head back on before placing her in my lap and buckling himself into the car beside me. He didn’t take his eyes off of me the entire drive to the hospital, nor did he say anything.

End of flashback

That was 12 years ago now. And if you were thinking that was the last time that Link and my brother put me in the hospital than you are sadly mistaken. Now a days I just ignore them and stay in my room whenever Link is over, which is basically every night. He sleeps in the spare room that we have that is located beside mine, and just down the hall from my brothers.
