Prologue: No Goodbyes

"I am going to kill Emily when I see her !!!"This was probably the hundredth time I had thought this same thing in the last forty-five minutes.

"Where is she?"She had told me to wait by the roller coaster counter while she went to get ice-creams for the both of us. Its getting late and when I checked the time it was a quarter past nine. Beautiful! I am so dead!! Mom had said to be back by eight and the last thing I want to see is my mother angry.

I scanned quickly through the crowd, looking for a blonde head. Emily looked nothing like me. She was blonde, tall and slender with warm brown eyes while I had sea green eyes and jet black hair almost to mid-thigh.Emily always stood out in a crowd. But now, I couldn't see her anywhere.
I quickly clapped my hands over my ears as the huge roller coaster sped right behind me along with the screams of its many occupants. I turned around to look at it. It was already near the next curve. I closed my eyes and shuddered as I remembered my last ride. Emily always tease me for that. I hate roller coasters. My first and last ride in it was memorable, to say the least. It took me three days to get the ground under my feet again.
I looked around impatiently. If she doesn't hurry back, I am pretty sure my darling mom would get a promotion from 'town doctor' to 'town murderer' on the charge of killing her own daughter.Mom hated people who were not punctual. I made my way to the ice-cream stall but there was no sign of Emily. The irritation in my mind gave way to fear and anxiety.
'Where the hell is she?'
I cupped my hands on either side of my mouth and yelled:"EMILY!!EMILY, WHERE ARE YOU??" I cried helplessly.
But the only answer was the din of the fair. Ice locked in my chest and my eyes grew wet. I waded through the crowd yelling "EMILY!!". Several eyes questioned me but I pushed past them.
I reached the gate, saw a ladder to its side and started climbing, tripping regularly. I got to the top and turned around to search the crowd for the familiar shiny blond head. I saw several blondes, but not the one I was looking for. I stumbled down and stood on the ground with shaking knees. My vision blurred, tears flowed down my face. I screamed desperately,
"E-M-I-L-YYYYYY....!"
