Not Exactly A Funny Story
A 17-year-old girl and a 52-year-old-woman travelled to the same island on the same day.
They had never met before, but witnesses on the boat said they had sat next to each other and "made small talk".
The boat arrived on the island at 10:01am, and the visitors were given a brief welcome talk and a map before being allowed to scatter and walk around the island as they pleased.
The boat back to the mainland was due to leave at 19:30pm.
The young woman and the old woman were not at the docks at this time.
After half an hour of the island staff looking for them, their bodies were found on opposite ends of the island, the West and East peaks.
The post-mortem declared that they both died of natural, unidentifiable causes.
So two women who have never met before go onto an island and die at the same time about 5 miles away from each other.
Needless to say, D.I Amelia Humphrey was stumped.
She knew she was a skilled detective, but this seemed to make no sense. She couldn't be satisfied with coincidences, and yet that did seem to be the only thing that wasn't ridiculous and completely implausible.
She tried to clear away her confusion on the boat over, taking in the sea and the sky and the mountain points of the island. The spray hit her back a few times, and she tried to let the feeling of it tie her down to Earth.
She got out and onto the dock with shaky legs which had only slightly started to turned to sea legs, but now we're just plain useless.
"Detective," she was greeted by the woman in shorts and a t-shirt who was the Head warden of the island, "Thank you for coming. This way, please."
Amelia spent a total of four hours inspecting the two crime scenes with her team, and then she went off on her own to search around the island. She did not entirely know what she was searching for, but it felt important to cover all bases.
Finally, half an hour before the boats were due to sail back, Amelia ascended the Western peak of the island.
The bodies had been taken away, and Amelie sent the team down to the docks to get ready to go. The mystery of it all lay tangled in a knot in her head.
But, as she gazed across out into the open ocean, and saw the last rays of the setting sun continue to sparkle on each wave, and as she felt the wind tug at her hair and remind her she was alive, and as she heard the birds wheeling over her head, and as she smelt the salt in the air like a promise... Well.
