Chapter 1: Escapees
June 12, 2013
Seokjin POV
“And this is where we keep our prized experiments,” said the tour guide as she gestured to the big room before the rest of the interns.
It was a large room that had open space in the middle. But along the right were tall cylindrical tubes with water that held 3 young boys in a fetus ball position. All of them had dark brown hair and wore a white t-shirt and white lounge pants.
The boys held their fetus position as they were held submerged in water. Their hair flowed around their heads showing their solemn faces and closed eyes.
“These young lads have been genetically modified to be more advanced than the average human being.” The tour guide had a spark of amusement in her eyes as she continued on. “These young boys have been here since birth, all of their mothers volunteered to carry children in order for this experiment to be a success. With that, we only call them by their last names.”
The tour guide ushered for all of us to come closer to the tubes.
“Jin, this is wrong, they shouldn’t be directly experiments on humans, they should use rats or mice for the first stages of the experiment.”
I looked to my right to see my close friend and colleague standing next to me. Kim Namjoon. He has an IQ of 148 but he usually breaks the tings he touches. And with that, he’s usually careful with smaller things.
Namjoon continued on, lowering his voice, “I can’t help but think that there were more ‘experiments’ before those 3. They were probably the only ones that survived. The youngest of all of them is probably 15? Jin, I’m not sure about you but this whole thing feels wrong.”
I felt the same exact way as Namjoon, but no words could form in my mouth. All I could do was nod and follow the group to where the tour guide was standing.
“Here we have ‘Jeon’,” as she gestured to the youngest looking boy, “he is genetically advanced with speed, and not only running or doing tasks fast. Jeon can also heal fast which makes it a plus side if we were to put him in a war - he could potentially be ‘untouched’“.
She moved on to the next boy in a tube, “The next experiment is ‘Kim’. There have been incidents where we would find his tube to be empty and have thought he has escaped. But that was only his power being unconsciously used. Kim has the power of invisibility or to camouflage into his surroundings. If we can stabilize this power, Kim can be very useful on assassinations.”
“And finally, ‘Park’.”
The 3rd boy in a tube seemed to look more healthy than the other two. His skin had more colour and there were subtle twitches you could see.
“Park has the ability to control water. Anything that has water, Park will be able to manipulate it. And that includes humans as well. If Park were to join a war, the side he is on, would be the side to surely win.”
The tour guide stopped and turned to face the group completely.
“In short, these boys are killing machines.”
~
After the tour, all of us were lead back to our rooms. I shared my room with Namjoon and there he was lost in thought on the swivel chair next to the window.
I sat on my bed lost in my own thoughts as well. Those boys don’t deserve to live like that, but they were made just to be here. This was their purpose but I knew that there was so much more to them.
Without second doubting my decision, I opened my mouth to tell Joon but he was already talking,
“Jin, let’s break them out.”
I grinned at my colleague creating a plan in the small room.
~
“Joon where are we supposed to go after we free them? We know we can’t let them stay by themselves.”
“Jin, if you don’t shut up, we’re going to get caught.”
Namjoon and I were dressed in all black with black masks that just covered our mouth and nose. We quietly shuffled down the empty halls slowly approaching the room. “Kim Namjoon, you know we can’t leave them after we let them go.”
“And that’s why we’re taking them with us. Now close your mouth while I hack this system.”
With Joon’s high IQ, he could easily disarm the system and know which wires to cut so the cameras all shut off. Both my parent’s worked in the medical field, one being a doctor and one being a surgeon. With ease, I slowly pushed the wires around to find the ones I had to cut, thanks to Namjoon’s instructions. And in no time, we were in.
All the lights were completely off, the only source being the 3 tubes that held the captives.
I turned to Namjoon asking the most obvious question that lingered in the air, “And now what? How do we get them out of the tubes? How do we know if they’ll be able to breathe the oxygen in? Can we carry them all? Where are we even going?”
“Wherever we’re going, I can run myself, the only people you have to carry are Kim and Jeon.” A muffled voice came out of nowhere when me and Namjoon made sure that no one else was in the lab.
To my absolute horror, the voice came from a tube. the tube that had the healthiest boy.
“OH MY GOD JOON! NAMJOON!” I whisper yelled hitting my partners arm rapidly. “HE LIVES! OH MY GOD JOON!”
All my partner could do was nod whilse I was in the middle of freaking out. I nervously glanced at the other 2 tubes to see if the other boys ha also woken up. To my relief, it was only the one that was talking to us.
I turned back to the singular boy and gave a tilt of my head, “Are you a fish?”
Namjoon looked back at me in disbelief and hit my arm hard, “Seokjin!” he said in an angry whisper, “That is NOT a good impression.”
The boy in the tube laughed and his eyes crinkled up into small crescents, “The tour guide told you right? I have control over water, so I can easily breathe in here.” From bubbly to suspicion, Park narrowed his eyes. “Why do you want to free us? To experiment on us too? I’m sorry but I will not have you experiment on my dongsaengs.” Park released himself from his fetus postion and simply stoof, submerged still in water. “You already know I can control anything that has water in it. And that includes both of you.”
Before I could react, Namjoon had his hand in front of me, signalling me to wait.
“Mr. Park, My name is Kim Namjoon and this is Kim Seokjin and-”
“Are you two married?”
I choked on air after hearing the simple question Park had just asked. I looked at Joon and there was the tiniest bit of red, painted on his cheeks.
Namjoon cleared his throat and continued, “How you’re being treated and experimented on isn’t the right way at all. Even though you were ‘made’ for this whole thing, all 3 of you deserve a chance at actually living life. I want to help you 3 escape and with the help of Jin, live together in a mansion. My mansion.”
My eyes widened at Namjoon’s proposal. He hasn’t returned to his family mansion since high school, he was disowned and had only told me a few months before we started the science internship.
Namjoon went on with his bargain, “I assure you, no one is living there now. All of my family had moved to the States and left me behind. But there is someone who I know cleans up the house from time to time, and it’s my childhood friend. So I assure you, no one will harm you there.”
Park raised his eyebrows and gave a hard stare. “Will there be food provided?”
Namjoon nodded.
“A place to sleep?”
Another nod.
“Clothes to wear?”
“Mr Park, any basic needs you all have, we will surely provide.”
Park gave a cheery smile and quickly agreed to come with us.
I was excited to help these boys out but there was another thing to be handled before our runaway.
“So, how do we get you out of these tubes?”
Park looked me in the eyes, and gave an eerie smile.
“I can handle that.”
~
We were running through a field, hearing the distant screams and threats of the scientists far behind us.
“C’mon! Only about 800 meters until we reach the main road! That’s where we’re getting picked up!”
Namjoon sprinted ahead, carrying Jeon on his back like a rag doll.
I was carrying Kim, trying to catch up to joon and Park was only a few meters behind me running with little difficulties.
“Park! You okay back there?”
The younger looked like he was fine, but I could hear the heavy pants behind me.
“I’m okay hyung. Just not used to this oxygen we have here.”
When we finally reached the highway, a black van was waiting for us to get in.
We stuffed Jeon and Kim into the farthest back row, Jimin and I sat in the row in front of that, and Joon took shotgun.
As soon as the vans doors closed, we hit 100km/h within 1 minute and 30 seconds.
Us and the boys were home free. Namjoon’s mansion was hidden far from the public’s eyes so that guaranteed extra safety.
After half an hour of silence, our driver began to speak.
“Namjoon, I never would have thought you were the type to start a break out.” He gave a chuckle and then turned to me, his red hair being illuminated by the moonlight. “Jung Hoseok reporting for duty, our adventure starts now.”
