Summary

Can Nick Bradigan solve the cold case that put him on ice seven decades ago or will Nick’s old-fashioned detective methods collapse against today’s high-tech criminal? Then Nick stepped back, stood upright, and spoke softly enough to where we had to listen to be sure we heard correctly. “Got ‘em.” “Got ‘em?” Jackson blurted out. “Got ‘em?” Rodgers sprang over behind where Nick was standing and glared at the pictures. Charles O’Malley stood up to get a straight-on look. Jackson’s legs dropped off his desk and he was on his feet moving toward the group gathering around Nick to get a look. He couldn’t get in any closer than the second row deep by the time he got there. “Got what?” Harrison was agitated and his face snarled up. “You ain’t got nothing, hot shot.” The rest of the detectives massed behind Nick and looked at the photographs and quickly the area in front of the laptop grew crowded. Harrison was the only man in the room not looking. “Those are just photos of the front console, the steering wheels, Nick. What are we looking at?” asked O’Malley. “Look deeper,” Nick said. Can Nick Bradigan solve the cold case that put him on ice seven decades ago working only with ancient clues and skills from the 1940s? Or will Nick’s old-fashioned detective methods collapse against today’s high-tech criminal?

Prologue

She was running as fast as her legs could move her. Sweat was building on her face. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest, pounding hard, and she could see the man chasing her, reaching to grab her collar. Juliet should have run toward her school instead of away from it. But she didn’t. And then she was across the football field and into the street, legs pumping harder than her heart could take. He almost had her. She could feel his hands right at her throat when she turned to look back. The dump truck crashed headlong into her at forty miles an hour - only a little over the speed limit - but enough to instantly end the life of 15-year-old Juliet Mayfield.
