Chapter 1
I’m Cloe Hemperly. I’m 15. I don’t know how to start this story because I have never done this before. Well, maybe I should start by describing my life and my looks. I was born with mahogany hair, red eyes, and I’m tanned. I live in California by the West Coast in a lovely 2018 modern mansion by the coast. My mom died when I was born and now my dad has a lazy cheater as a wife. Her name is Emma. We’re rich, I’m an only child, and we have a Ferrari and live in a 2018 modern mansion. We have a ton of secret rooms and an elevator. We basically own the beach and we’re so popular everybody is jealous of our lives. That’s about it. Oh, wait! One main detail I left out: I have severe depression.
My day started out as sleeping in on a Monday.
“Shoot! No! Why are you broken alarm clock?! DAD!” I screamed as I ran into my walk-in closet to get dressed. I slammed the door as soon as my dad ran into my room.
“What’s wrong this time?” he asked calmly.
“It’s broken!” I pointed to the alarm clock that said 7:45. School would be starting in 15 minutes. I was dressed in my normal school uniform ready to go. Breakfast. I ran down the stairs in heels (the school dress code requires them) and grabbed an apple.
“Ok, I’ll go to the store after I drop you off. C’mon. Let’s go.” He motioned to the door and I sprinted out. I flew over the car door and quickly buckled my seat belt. I turned on my iPhone 8 and looked at the time. 7:47. Two minutes?! Oh, my gosh! That’s a new record!
“Dad? Can I have the new computer and Minecraft?” I showed him my phone screen with the newest edition of Apple computer.
“Sure baby. Maybe for your birthday though.” I thought about my birthday for a minute. That’s tomorrow. Then I heard an ear-shattering scream coming from the ocean. I looked out to the shore. The bay was bloody and a shark washed up on the beach. Then I looked closer. Someone was running toward my friend Marlee. I saw their blonde hair and noticed that it was Amberly. She embraced Marlee in a hug and Marlee hugged her back.
I know I shouldn’t be jealous but Amberly was one of those typical every day mean girls. And she targeted me the most. Why? Probably because I’m much cuter than her, richer, and I’m smarter.
I sighed. I won’t be talking to Marlee today.
“What’s wrong Cloe?” Dad’s words brought me back to reality.
I closed my eyes as we pulled into the parking lot. “Nothing,” I answered.
“Okay, well, have fun at school.”
“I’ll try.” I shut the car door and sprinted to the classroom. I sat down just as the bell rang 8. Miss Emily walked in as cool as a cat and began the English lesson.
“Okay, class! We will begin with the normal quiz on last week’s lesson. I know, I know. You don’t exactly want to do this today, especially when you want to watch the video of a shark washing up on shore,” she said. I heard a couple of my classmates groan when they heard the word “quiz.” I groaned too when I saw who walked in late with my best friend in the world. Marlee would never be late. I raised my hand and waited to be called on.
“May I go to the bathroom please?” I asked when she noticed me.
“Sure. Hurry up though,” she replied. I quickly ran out of the classroom and into the bathroom down the hall. I checked in every stall and chose the farthest one from the door. I stood in the corner and slid down the wall and started to cry.
“Why does this happen to me, God?” I asked.
“What happened this time Cloe?” I heard Marlee’s voice and immediately stopped crying.
“Yeah what happened, brat?” I heard Amberly’s voice come after that as well.
I never wanted to say anything but I did. “Go away. I wanna be alone,” I said.
I heard contact of a fist hitting someone’s face and Amberly yelped in pain. I knew exactly what happened: Marlee had punched Amberly. I laughed for a second.
“Don’t laugh or I’ll pretend to be Marlee and you'll be me! But I’ll do much worse.”
The second she said that I ran out of the stall and back into my seat in the classroom.
“Why are you running in here?” Miss Emily asked calmly.
I sighed. “Amberly said she’d punch me. Like, a lot.”
“No, I didn’t! Right, Marlee?” Amberly looked toward Marlee who had just walked in.
“You, erm, kinda did.” Marlee’s voice faded away with every word she said.
“No, I didn’t you brats!” Amberly screamed.
“What is going on in here? I came by to check how you all were doing but I decided now that I should take Amberly back to my office to have a little chat.” Mrs. Marple grabbed Amberly’s wrist and dragged her out of the room while she desperately tried to escape. I giggled. The school principal was always in my favor. Miss Emily shot me a smile. I returned it to her and started my test. Within the next ten minutes, I was done and had it handed in. I walked cooly back to my seat and picked up a book and started reading. About thirty minutes later the bell rang and I hurried to my locker. I grabbed my math textbook and ran to my next class. The rest of the day was boring. After school, I texted Dad and said that I’d be at the beach if he needed me.
I was laying there sunbathing in my school clothes for about five minutes when I heard a male voice behind me. “Hey there,” he said.
I looked behind me and saw my friend, Asher. He has the looks of an angel and his eyes look like gold. He was another child with superpowers like me. I have telekinesis and he has the ability to teleport.
“Can I sit there?” he asked pointing next to me. I nodded and watched as he sat down next to me. I sighed.
“How are you, Asher?” I asked.
“Good. You?”
“Very well.” I stared out into the ocean at some surfers. One with black hair had fallen off his board and into the ocean. I watched for a minute until his head popped up again.
“Hello? Are you ok? You zoned out.” Asher’s voice brought me back to life. I stared into his awesome golden eyes.
“Sorry. Yeah, I’m fine.” My phone buzzed and I looked at my notification. It was Dad. He needed me at the house. “Hey, uh, I gotta go. I’m sorry. Catch you later?” He nodded and I ran about a yard before running back taking his phone and putting my number in it.
“What the heck did you do?” he asked, skeptical of my action.
“You’ll see!” I called over my shoulder. I ran into the house door smiling like an idiot, currently unaware of the situation.
