Chapter One

Once upon a time there was a town at the bottom of a mountain. At the top of the mountain lived a dragon that would from time to time come down to wreak havoc on the town. The townsfolk always rebuilt the town, then send a knight to kill the dragon. Every time the littlest knight was passed up, until finally there were no more knights to send. The town decided to send the littlest knight to face the dragon, they had no other options. The littlest knight gathered his sword and shield and donned his armor and set off to climb the ominous mountain. At the foot of the mountain he looked up and steadied his resolve. When he reached the mouth of the cave the dragon dwelled in he raised his sword and shield to the ready and yelled out.

“Dragon your terrorizing the town has come to an end! I am here to slay you and rid the world of your evil!”

The dragon came meandering out of his lair to face the knight.

“And why exactly do you think I am the bad guy here?”

“Well you’re the dragon, you burn down our village from time to time. You’re clearly the bad guy.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, I was here first. You guys came and set up your village at the bottom of my mountain.”

“And what of it? We rightfully purchased that land.”

“you tanked my property value. The benefit of living on top of a mountain is the view into the valley.”

“No, no if anything, we increased your property value, we just added a bunch of compareables to your area. You should be thanking us.”

“Compareables? You have got to be joking, those are not compareables. You have no where near the facilities, benefits, or amenities of my place. I mean square footage alone, you are out of your mind if you think those are compareables.”

“And what exactly was your plan here? What would the resale value be of a mountain overlooking a burnt-out village?” Because all this talk of property value means nothing if you aren’t looking at resale value. If anything, you are just raising your tax assessment.”

“Oh, don’t even get me started on the taxes here they are ridiculous. Do you have any idea the taxes that they sneak in for mountains? Its highway robbery.”

“I can’t even imagine. I mean it just seems like every year they just go up. I’m sick of this school tax.”

“I know, right! I mean they constantly complain they don’t have the budget for schools, so what am I paying all this money to?”

“It’s insane. The tax man, that’s the real bad guy here.”

“Ha so true, man I have been incredibly rude here, do you want to come in for a drink or something?”

“You know normally I would say no, but that climb was really intense.”

“Well come on in, we have some beer, water, and soda, but its diet. Wife’s really on me to drop some pounds, pillaging season is almost here.”

“Just a water then.”

With that the knight walked inside with the dragon to sit down for drinks. The dragon apologized for the mess as the littlest knight remarked that it was far cleaner than his house. They carried on and laughed for some time, in the dragons’ kitchen.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
