The Swedish-Speaking Cheerful Nihilism Club and the End of the World

Summary

The end of the world is steadily approaching, so 16-year-old Lumi Laukkanen is determined to start a "Cheerful Nihilism Club," to show everyone in town the bright side of the apocalypse. (This story is one that's very "everything but the kitchen sink" and yet everything will tie together through to the very end of the world.) The world would end in 8 months, 11 hours, 52 minutes, and 3 seconds...and the current remaining population—mostly Nordic—went about their daily lives as usual. Yes, of course there were big changes to the routine, but all those details aren't important to the story. Instead, we'll concentrate on Lumi Laukkanen, who was determined to start her cheerful nihilism club at school as soon as the idea had hit her. What better way to live out the rest of her days in happiness and to help others do the same? This story is not about stopping the world from ending or reversing what already happened to the rest of the planet. The world will end and everyone will die, but the belief in a new world that holds memories from the old deep in their subconscious keeps a bit of hope alive.

Prologue

Over the past couple years, the world has been slowly disappearing meter by meter, devoured by the nothingness spreading tirelessly...all because of one very powerful wish.

Naturally, many people began to panic and raise a fuss, though some more than others—when America, for example, met its fate, one could experience a bit more peace and quiet. It was admirable that they refused to accept a grim fate and suffer in silence, but did they have to be so noisy about it?

The world would end in 8 months, 11 hours, 52 minutes, and 3 seconds...and the current remaining population—mostly Nordic—went about their daily lives as usual. Yes, of course there were big changes to the routine, but all those details aren't important to the story.

Though half the town sought refuge in the wilderness at their summer cabins, Lumi was sure she could find club members and people who needed help. What else was cheerful nihilism but looking on the positive side of the meaninglessness of life?
