TRIAL BY BLOOD [ 1# HEARTLINES DUOLOGY]

Summary

Though she didn't see it, back in the garden, a figure stood carefully behind the large tree at the corner of the fence. They moved into the moonlight as they stared up at the drawn curtains. Miyoung (Friday) Si grew up believing that she had no relatives, so when she receives an urgent distress call from a long lost cousin, she is nothing if not happy to pack up and move. But Liang Si isn't what Friday expected. Her cousin has erratic, frightening mood swings that leave her in a blazing fit of fury one moment and self destructive cesspool the next. But what's probably the most disturbing, is her obsession with The Velvets- a group of elite young women that have the whole town wedged under the heel of their red pumps. Liang is convinced they aren't human- that they have something to do with her mother's disappearance and when Friday finds herself spending more and more time in their company, her initial skepticism over Liang's conspiracies begin to turn into uncertainty. She's having dreams- ones that leave her screaming in the middle of the night. With the feeling that she's being watched at the back of her mind, Friday struggles to figure out who to trust. But things aren't always clean cut, temptations are hard to suppress and our instincts have more control over us then we'd like to admit.

Do you know that feeling? And the cold shiver that washes down your spine, like an unannounced tide licking at the toes of your feet because of it? The sudden heaviness in your chest, as if all the blood in your body had been drained into your heart for it to carry.

It’s that feeling you get when you’re suffocating, only to take a sharp breath of air- it hurts and you almost can’t comprehend it at first because it burns so much that fuck you regret taking it in the first place.

That sense of sudden realisation and discovery- when the truth is so evil it makes you question why speaking it isn’t a sin.

Staring at Sola, bloodied and messy as she straddled Jae’s limp body that night, left that feeling ingrained into my mind for weeks afterwards, haunting me in the of darkest hours.

There was something in the way she had looked at me, the pure ecstasy and power that pooled in her once brown eyes that gave her an almost feral appeal. A concoction of hypnotic oranges and golds that threatened to spill out of her irises like a roaring stream.

It was that look, that look, that made me run.

Down the crowded stairs and across the front lawn.

Away from that god forsaken house, away from the drunken swarm of idiots and away from the idea, the sheer possibility that there was someone, people - people just like me.
