Prologue
As I close my eyes, I take a deep breath to inhale the sweet lavender scent the plane cabin has. I’m finally going home. I can not wait to hold my daughter in my arms again or to kiss my husband. It’s only been a year but it feels like more.
I take a sip of my champagne and let my thoughts take hold.
I remember the first time my daughter said my name, years after I made that promise. She looked at me with her little innocent eyes and I felt the guilt like a knife in my side. I made a promise to never use my power again. And I was never going to teach my children how to use it if they ever inherited the power. It’s too destructive.
I remember the first time she ever used her power. She was three and we were playing tag. I remember how she ran faster than sound because she didn’t want to be caught. Superspeed. It was very unexpected.
I also remember the time she broke a lamp and as it hit the ground, the world shook. It was later recorded a...
No, that’s not what happened. I open my eyes to see the champagne in my glass shaking violently. I lean out into the aisle and look into the self-flying plane’s cockpit. All the lights were on so I assumed it was just turbulence.
Not wanting another drop of champagne to go to waste, I pick up the glass and hold it in my hand. I take another sip and slowly drip back into my memories.
But before my memories full took hold, I was shaken with a force strong enough to throw me out of my seat. I look back into the cockpit and see each light, one by one, click off. I quickly turn and open the floral curtains of the window and see the earth slowly coming toward me. I stifle a gasp of shock as it full hits me what’s going on. I didn’t think the turbulence could get any worse, but it did. The plane shook so violently, I could almost feel my brain move.
I try to get up and in the process, I drop my glass, causing the broken glass to fly everywhere. My seatbelt automatically locked on, trapping me in the seat. The plane shook so vigorously that I had to rest my head on the back of the already reclined chair. The moment I did that, I saw little cracks forming in the roof. Then I realized that if the cracks were ‘small’, I wouldn’t be able to see them. There was a loud groaning/cracking noise so loud I had to shut my eyes. I heard something break off, then an enormous pulling sensation. I could barely open my eyes past a small slit, and through there I saw an astonishing sight. The roof of the plane was no longer there and thought the huge hole in the roof, I could see the beautiful blueish purple hue of Orion. when I finally tore my gaze from the gorgeous view, I saw the ground quickly racing toward me through the window. With one final glance, I quickly decided what I was going to do. ‘I’m sorry’ I thought as I broke the promise I swore I wouldn’t.
