“Rough night?” She asked, knowing full well who was on with me for the betterment of the night.

“He may be a machine with no feelings or waste producing organs, but the rest of us need are human and need breaks, bathroom and food related. I cannot even imagine what he is doing to those poor interns following him about all night.” I washed my hands, then taking a lie down on the bench behind me.

“I remember being one of those poor interns following him around, he wasn’t that bad back then, but then again he didn’t run the trauma department back then either. Come on, you and I can clean up the mess he left behind.” Cass said sliding her white lab coat on, and patting my thigh to get up. “Did you tell Shawn what was going on tomorrow morning? Or is Simon going to sneak attack him and kidnap him to the boxing place?”

“Yup, I told him, it went over so well he is refusing to talk to me, text me back or answer my phone calls. Bette said he hasn’t moved from her couch at all. She had to tell Simon to get him from her place in the morning and where her hide a key is. I don’t know what to do with him anymore. I mean he is only 10 years old; he isn’t even a teenager yet! He shouldn’t be this sullen and angry just yet. I thought I still had another 3 years at most.” Cass gave me a small smile and slung her arm around my shoulder.

“You and I both know that this has nothing to do with you, or the fact that he is turning into a teenager before his time. It has everything to do with Marcus and his popping in and out of Shawn’s life.” I nod not even looking up at her as we walked back to the nursing station. “He was here for a while and was doing really good at keeping promises, leading everyone into that false sense of security he is very good at building and then he found some new woman and fucked off again.”

“What did I see in him again?” I ask out loud not really expecting an answer, I flopped down in the desk chair pulling up the nightly reports I needed to work on and get a few things squared away before rounding on patients for medications and the usual check in.

As I was looking from the tablet to the bed numbers trying to fix the logistical nightmare that one of those interns created by just inputting a bed number in the system after checking the patient in, noticed a name in the chart that made me smile, normally when you see a repeat name in here, they are here for pain meds, domestic abuse victims that just aren’t ready to admit they cannot change their partners, and the homeless looking for a warm place to sleep

“Hi Mr. Ward, what brings you back here today?” I ask walking in the curtain off area, to see the sweetest older man, he had heart issues and seemed to press his life alert 2 to 3 times a week over small scares.

“I knew my girl was working tonight, and I needed to see her.” He reaches out and takes my hand in both of his. Mr. Ward was in his 80s, and was funny and a perfect gentleman. At least once a month he asks to run away with him and be his personal nurse and marry him, to which I always politely decline.

“You know you can always just call me when you want to see me Mr. Ward.” I laugh, and start doing my checks and hooking him up to monitors. “Why didn’t the doctor who checked you in hook you up?” I asked, more to myself than to him.

“He seemed a bit wet behind the ears, and nervous that he was going to miss something big.”

“Unc!” I heard someone call from outside the curtain.

“My boy is here.” Mr. Ward said with a proud smile on his face.

“Bed Seven.” I called out, busying myself with the monitor when I heard the curtain open and close, trying to distance myself to let them talk.

“Unc, Jason said they had to put you in an ambulance again. Why were you at the gym so late?” The nephew asked I heard the chair scrap closer to the bed.

“Well, the boys wanted to train a bit later, and I miss watching and being ringside.”

“But, you know you need to be home and take your meds at the times I have set on your alarm, or these kinds of things will keep happening.” The nephew spoke softly.

“No need to whisper, my girl knows all about it, she is the one who found me the fancy pill holder for my key chain.” Mr. Ward reached over and took my hand turning my attention to him. I looked down at him with a kind smile, he was a sweet man, and I was very happy that he had family looking out for him, I glance up to meet the eyes of his nephew, those very familiar sky blue eyes.

"Hey, Rhiannon?" Terry stood up, he was much taller and broader than I remember, and the wife beater and shorts he was wearing showed off the muscles I had guessed he ad that night in the bar.

“Terry, Hi, I didn’t know Mr. Ward was your nephew.” I reached my hand out to shake his, Mr. Ward still holding my other hand.
