First Day
Jocelyn Mcgee
“Alright Jocelyn, you’re officially in the school’s system now. Would you like a copy of your classes?”
Nodding my head in response to the secretary’s question, I watched as she printed out said schedule before giving my attention to mom. “You gonna be good?” She nonchalantly questioned. Nodding my head once again, I let her place a quick kiss on my cheek before grabbing my schedule from the secretary as she held it out for me. “Thanks.” Receiving a smile from her as a response, I walked with my mom out of the main office before making my way to my homeroom.
“Have a good day at school!”
Waving a hand in the air, I continued my trek to find my homeroom while muttering some lyrics to a song under my breath. Pausing when I found one of the three digit numbers on my paper, I let a small sigh escape my lips as I entered the classroom. Instantly all eyes were on me, the attention instantly making me tense up as my eyes searched for my new homeroom teacher. “Miss Mcgee?” A rough voice questioned. Moving my brown eyes to the owner of the voice, I gave the grown man an awkward smile as he walked up to me.
“It’s great to meet you!”
“You too.”
I hope.
Widening my smile a bit more, I moved my attention to my potential classmates as they all eagerly stared at me with curious eyes. “Everyone, this here is Jocelyn. Now I want you all to treat her kindly and show her around, okay?” Cracking my neck as they replied back with a simple ‘okay’, I decided to search an empty desk to sit in as we waited for the bell to ring. Spotting one by a widely smiling blonde chick, I silently made my way over towards her before sliding my body into the seat behind her.
I knew that she and her friends were looking at me, my eyes staying focus on the phone in my hand as I went onto Facebook. Glancing up as I heard someone clear their throat, I gave the blonde an awkward smile as we made eye contact. “Hi!” She enthusiastically greeted. “...Hi?” I gave her a slightly confused look as she basically brightened her smile. “Where are you moving from?” She curiously asked. Leaning back slightly as I glanced at the time on my phone, I heaved a discreet sigh of relieved when I saw that the bell was going to ring before answering her question.
“Wilkes-Barre.”
“Are you-“
Hopping to my feet as the bell went off, I the girl one last awkward smile before quickly rushing out of the room. “Don’t think I’ll be making any friends today...” I muttered to myself as I began searching for the recording booths. “Need help looking for something?” Jerking in surprise when I heard someone’s voice next to me, I glanced over to it before blinking when I saw that it was some guy with really long blonde hair.
Staring at him with unblinking eyes for a brief second, I decided to go ahead and get some help as I handed him my paper. “I’m trying to find the recording booths” I informed him. Watching him as he nodded his head, I waited until he was done studying my paper before following after him. “So what made you decided to come to CAPA High?” He curiously asked. Folding my schedule as he handed it back to me, I shoved my hands in my back pockets as I followed after him.
“My mom recommended the school ta me a while back since I wanted ta go to a performing arts school, so I decided ’why not?'” I summarized as we walked through the halls. “I see….Liking it so far?” He genuinely asked. Staring at him from the corner of my eye, I answered his question with a slight shrug before going down another hall. “By the way, the name’s Brandon.” Turning my attention back towards him as he spoke once again, I gave him an amused grin as his neck turned a light pink.
“Nice ta meet’cha. I’m Jocelyn.”
“Nice to meet you too.”
Feeling myself relax as we came to a stop, I gave Brandon one more smile as he shoved his hands in his front pockets. “You know…I can show you around the school until you get use to it- if you want though” he sputtered out. A light snicker left my lips as I watched his neck turn pink again, my brown eyes gazing at the blonde amusedly as he avoided making eye contact. “I’m cool with it. See you after class?” I questioned. Nodding once after he affirmed our meeting, I turned on my heel to my first period class before walking into the recording booth.
Like homeroom, all attention was on me, a couple of familiar faces catching my attention as I made my way to the balding man hunching over a desk. “Mister Yoder?” I called out. Jerking back when the man shot up, I waited until his attention was on me before giving him a crooked smile. “Yes, yes, that’s me. I’m guessing you’re Miss Mcgee?” He questioned back. Nodding my head as I gave him a slightly tight smile, I continued to watch him with wary eyes as a wide smile grace his lips.
“Magnificent! If you may, can you tell me what singing range you are?”
“…Alto.”
Taking another step back as he let out a very high pitched squeal, my mind quickly came up with the thought that he may be gay as he made his way towards the actual booth. “God is finally looking my way! Hurry, hurry. I want you to head into the booth so I can record your singing” he proclaimed in a gleeful tone. I gave him a suspicious look. “Why?” I questioned him. Slowly making my way towards him, I carefully shrugged my bag off as I stood beside my Audio and Chorus teacher.
“To record your progress of course!!” He chirped. Accepting the reason with a small sigh, I walked into the booth with my bag and gently placed it down by the door before walking up to the microphone. After placing the headphones on my ears, I moved my eyes over towards the only window in the room as Yoder’s voice entered my ears. “Alright Jocelyn, what song do you want to sing for us today?” He excitedly asked. Glancing up at the ceiling as I thought of what song to sing, I ignored the nervousness brewing in my stomach as a song came to mind.
“Latch by Disclosure.”
Staying silent as I waited for said song to play, I raced to get my phone out before looking up the lyrics. Smiling to myself in triumph as I was able to pull them up in time, I waited until it was the time to sing before opening my mouth.
“You lift my heart up when the rest of me is down
You, you enchant me even when you’re not around
If there are boundaries, I will try to knock them down
I’m latching on, babe, now I know what I have found”
Taking a quick deep breath as I finished the first verse, I made a another silent glance at the glass window before continuing.
“I feel we’re close enough
I wanna lock in your love
I think we’re close enough
Could I lock in your love, baby?
Now I’ve got you in my space
I won’t let go of you
Got you shackled in my embrace
I’m latching on to you
Now I’ve got you in my space
I won’t let go of you
Got you shackled in my embrace
I’m latching on to you”
I smiled slightly as the words began to flow freely from my lips, my eyes not even reading them from my phone anymore as my voice went an octave lower.
“I’m so encaptured, got me wrapped up in your touch
Feel so enamored, hold me tight within your clutch
How do you do it, you got me losing every breath
What did you give me to make my heart beat out my chest?”
Placing a hand on my stomach as I hit the high note, I mentally rewarded myself with a ‘job well done’ as my smile slowly began to widen.
“I feel we’re close enough
I wanna lock in your love
I think we’re close enough
Could I lock in your love, baby?
I feel we’re close enough
I wanna lock in your love
I think we’re close enough
Could I lock in your love, baby?
Now I’ve got you in my space
I won’t let go of you
Got you shackled in my embrace
I’m latching on to you
Now I’ve got you in my space
I won’t let go of you
Got you shackled in my embrace
I’m latching on to you”
Softening the last note as I finished the song, I heaved a satisfied sigh before placing the headphones back on the mic. After grabbing my bag and exiting out of the booth, I gave Mister Yoder a weirded out look as he fanned his face. “Dear lord, you got tears forming in my eyes!” He dramatically wailed out. Staring at him amusedly as he tried to stop said tears from flowing, the elder male let out a couple of sniffles before giving me a charming smile.
I bet he broke hearts with that smile.
Snorting silently at my thought, I gave my teacher a curious look as he clapped his hands. “Oh, you have to join districts! You just have to!!” He excitedly exclaimed. Holding my hands up in mock surrender, I nodded my head in response before looking around for a seat as he squealed loudly to himself. Smirking lightly when I found one, I quickly went over to it before he could ask something else.
Humming to myself as I pulled out my headphones, I quickly connected them to my phone before going onto Pandora. After picking a random station to listen to, I relaxed in my seat and curiously gazed around before letting my eyes land on the two people from my homeroom. Raising an eyebrow when I realized that they were staring at me as well, I felt my head tilt to the side just a tad bit as they began making their way towards me.
Glancing up at the time on my phone as they got closer, I let a small sigh when I realized it wasn’t time to leave yet before giving them my attention again. “Hi Jocelyn” the girl of the two chirped as she plopped herself in the seat beside me. “Hey” I greeted back as I gave her an amused look. “You know, I’ve never heard someone sing like that. I think you had everyone in the room close to tears” she proclaimed as she gave me a friendly smile. Feeling my cheeks heat up from the compliment, I gave her a shy ‘thank you’ before asking them for their names.
“I’m Jordan.”
“Rick.”
Smiling slightly in response, I quickly changed to a different station on my phone before answering a text from Liz. “So what are you tryna go to school for?” I heard Jordan curiously question. After replying to my friend in Wilkes Barre, I gazed back up at my two classmates as I answered her question.
“I don’t really know yet. I might do it for singing, I might do it for audio” I informed nonchalantly. Smiling tensely when I made accidental eye contact, I let my shoulders sag in relief as the bell finally rang. “So what’s your next class?” Rick curiously questioned. Bringing up a good point, I quickly pulled out my schedule before searching for my next class. “Choreography.” Not bothering to see him nod his head, we all made our way out of the room and into the bustling halls.
Silently I gazed around for Brandon, his blonde head quickly coming into view as he made his way towards me. “Rea- oh, hey guys” he greeted as his eyes landed on Jordan and Rick. “Wassup Brandon. Showing her around?” Rick questioned while throwing an arm around the blonde’s shoulders. Said teen nodded his head in response, his face completely blank as my arm was suddenly linked with someone else’s. “We need to hurry up or else we’d gonna be late” Jordan proclaimed as she tugged on my arm.
“I think we’re good since I doubt Richards would gives us detention for showing around the new girl.”
“This ‘new girl’ has a name.”
Raising an eyebrow at the amused look Rick gave me, I decided to ignore him for now as Jordan pulled me down the hall. “Who cares, let’s go!!” Shaking my head at the worried tone she used, I let the brunette take me to our next class as I gazed around to memorize the way we are going. Once we had reached where the dance studios were, we immediately walked into one of them just as the bell rang.
“You guys made it in a nick of time” I heard a deep voice say. Glancing around curiously, I let my eyes land on a surprisingly young looking guy as he crossed his arms over his chest. Slowly his eyes began to land on me, recognition shining through them as he gave me a bright smile. “You must be Miss Mcgee, correct?” Nodding my head slowly in response, I blinked blankly at the brunette of a teacher as he held out a hand towards me.
“Nice to meet you. I’m Carl Richards.”
“Why does it sound like you’re tryna ask her out of a date, Richards?” I heard Rick question in a teasing tone. Feeling my face heat up a bit in embarrassment, I gave my fellow light skin a small glare as he grinned. “It’s called a proper greeting Martínez” Mister Richards shot back with a pair of pink tinted cheeks. Grumbling under my breath, I awkwardly crossed my arms over my chest before cocking a hip out.
“Is there any rules I have to familiarize myself with?” I questioned. Watching as he snapped his attention back towards me, the brunette of a teacher gave me a friendly smile while shaking his head. “No rules, only fun” he responded. Smiling happily at that, I gave my Choreography teacher a small head nod before following Brandon to where he and his friends stand at. Instantly my eyes landed on the blonde girl from earlier, her grey eyes brightening up immensely as they landed on me.
“Cool! We’re in the same dance class!!”
Giving her another one of my awkward smiles, I only nodded my head in response before giving my attention to Mister Richards as he cleared his throat. “Alright class, since everyone is finally here-“ Raising an amused eyebrow when the brunette gave Rick, Brandon, and Jordan a mock glare; I slowly crossed my arms over my chest as he continued talking. “-let’s get to know each other!” I held back a snicker when he had said this, a wide smile gracing my lips as he sarcastically tapped his chin before pointing at one of the boys beside me.
“Martinez! We’ll start with you!”
Shaking my head as I heard Rick groan, a light giggle left my lips as he let out a heavy sigh before doing as he was told. “My name is Rick Martinez. I’m fifteen years old and love to play football. I have four siblings, two younger and two older, and hope to become something big in the music industry” he informed with a nonchalant look on his face. “You forgot to mention that you’re a complete moron...” I heard Brandon mutter under his breath. A light laugh left my lips as Rick turned to him, a small glare on his face as he directed it to the long haired blonde next to me.
“Right. Moore, you’re next” Mister Richards said with a small amused smirk on his lips. The amused smile on my lips never left my lips as I stared at Brandon, his neck turning a dark shade of pink as he cleared his throat. “Uh, my name is Brandon Moore and I live with my parents. I’m fifteen years old and I’m hoping to go to school for Choreography. I also play basketball and football.” Nodding my head in impressment, I gave Brandon a lopsided smile as he glanced my way. “Me next! I’m Jordan Madsen and I’m fourteen years old. I have no idea of what I want to do in the future and I live with my mom and little brother” I heard Jordan inform from somewhere behind me. Glancing at her from over my shoulder, I gave the brunette an amused look as a satisfied smile graced her lips.
“Thank you Jordan for volunteering. Anyone else before I randomly start calling out on more people?”
Glancing around as Mister Richards asked his question, I began fidgeting with my fingers as no one else volunteered. Pulling out my phone when he called on someone I kind of didn’t know, I began playing Subway Surfers while waiting for him to call on me or the people surrounding me. “Mister Kevin! You’re up next!” Feeling my interest piqued, I glanced over towards said Asian looking kid as he dramatically cleared his throat.
“Well, I’m Kevin Lee, but you can call me Kong- matter of fact, call me King Kong.”
I grinned amusedly when he gave us a wink, a wide grin gracing his lips as Jordan and the blonde girl shook their heads. “I’m also-“ I chuckled as he flicked his wrist to glance at an imaginary watch before shaking my head as he continued. “-fourteen years, three months, fifteen days, two hours, ten minutes, and three seconds old. I’m a single child that lives with both of his parents and I’m best friends with Jordan Madsen” he chirped out in a sarcastic manner. The class laughed out in response as Jordan smacked his arm, a wide smile on her lips as she tried not to laugh as well.
“Don’t associate me with you!”
Kevin scoffed mockingly while crossing his arms over his chest. “Too late for that! They already know that we’re the bestest of fwiends~” He cooed while pinching one of Jordan’s cheeks. Again the class laugh, a snicker leaving my own lips as Mister Richards picked on the blonde girl next. “Okay, so my name is Gabriella Thompson -Gabi for short- and my dream is to become a well known Choreographer! I live with my two little sisters and my dad and I’m fifteen years old” she informed with a bright smile on her face. Smiling amusedly as she gave our classmates a bright smile, I gave Mister Richards a raised eyebrow as he gazed at me with curiosity shining brightly in his brown eyes.
“And you, Miss Mcgee?”
Pursing my lips as I forced myself not to give him an annoyed glare, I slowly glanced at everyone in the room before exhaling deeply as I crossed my arms over my chest. “Well, my name’s Jocelyn and I’m fourteen years old....I have two younger brothers and live with my mom” I warily informed as my eyes darted around the room nervously. “And your plans for school?” Mister Richards questioned. Gently bitting down on my bottom lip as I continued to glance around, I finally let my eyes land on my Choreographer of a teacher as he gave me an assuring smile.
“I want to professionally sing or become a music producer. I haven’t really decided yet” I honestly stated. Feeling my face heat up as I was given an impressed expression, I gave both my teacher and classmates a shy smile before diverting my attention elsewhere in the room. “Well, then! I guess it’s my turn! My name is Carl Richards, which I’m sure the majority of you already know, and I’m currently twenty-three years old. I also live with my pitbull, Lucky.” Moving my attention back to Mister Richards as he talked a little about himself, I slightly tilted my head to the side in thought as I wondered what his dog looked like.
Completely random, I know, but I couldn’t help it.
Shrugging my shoulders lightly, I looked up at the ceiling and mentally counted how many lights there were before glancing over towards Brandon as the bell rang.
“What’s next?”
