Chapter 1
-3018- flashback
The sound of my alarm aches through my skull followed by my mother hollowing down the hallway for me to get up. I stretch my short frail limbs and dive out of bed. First day back from break. Now I wasn’t popular so I never looked forward to going through social torture but call me a nerd, I liked to learn. I put on the school’s dull uniform, grab my backpack and run toward the bus at the end of the street.
When I arrive at school we are asked to head to the school’s hall immediately.
“Denise, what’s going on?” I jump at my name being shouted, Its my friend Tris.
“I’m not sure!” I shout but she’s right next to me. We assemble in the hall where there is a large table with some scientist’s set up for display.
“Students please be seated.” I peer around me and my eyes fall on the table and I read the words immortality is now my heart immediately stutters. What is going on?
“Students, Mr Hawthorn from the republic science lab is here to talk to you, so please listen and show your respects.” My principle looks excited and I can’t bear this tension anymore.
“Right thank you, um students I am very excited, your school has been chosen (well more like one of you) to be part of our biggest invention yet, immortality!” His words echoed through every one of us and a rouse of chattering brew to intoxicating levels.
“Students calm down!” the principles voice created silence. Every body stared at Mr Hawthorn eager for him to explain. “What do you mean one of us?” A boy spoke. We where all thinking it.
“Well, your names are all in the jar and well whom ever name we pull out will be granted immortality” He spoke with such pleasantness.
He gestured his hand out to the the other scientist in the room. He looked much younger but had Mr Hawthorns features. Maybe it was his son? He looked intimidating he clearly didn’t want to be here. He stood with a fierce look and his brown short hair crept just above his eyelids.
“son?” my thoughts broke as the younger guy picked up a large jar and walked to the centre of the stage. He put his hand in the jar, I looked around me and allot of people had their fingers crossed. I knew it wasn’t going to be me, out of all the people in the room what would be the odds. Besides I would politely decline, Immortality might be good for a while but watching your love ones die. No thank you.
My shoulder is nudged by Tris, she’s giving me a ‘what the?’ look.
“what?” I look at her concerned.
“oh your name was called.” My eyes immediately flash to the front everybody’s eyes are on me. I can’t deal with this. I was supposed to be hidden I wasn’t supposed to be part of some science futuristic plan. I couldn’t handle it I pick myself up and force myself to the front of the room. My footsteps are immediately silence by the upraise of applause. I force a smile and shake Mr Hawthorn and my principles hand.
“oh god” is all I can fathom.
My lungs feel as though they are collapsing, my heart throbs as does the pain in my skull knowing that there is a possibility I wont be able to escape this.
“Are you okay dear?” Mr Hawthorns voice echo’s then with a thud I hit the ground closing my eyes.
