Chapter 1: The Not Normal

The cold slap of the wind on Sky Hale’s body created goosebumps on her arms, but the raised hair on her neck and back was due to the fact she might die tonight.

Her heart was beating so loud she was sure the vampires who were chasing her could hear it. “Dammit why does this always have to happen” she whined to herself as she turned the corner of an unfriendly street. She had no idea where she was. “I’m such an idiot, why would I think that I could be normal” she huffed out loudly.

The wind started getting rough and her dark brown hair flapped in the wind, getting all clumped together. The navy-blue skinny jeans, beige leather jacket and boots were not helping in insulating the heat she once had. She had a petite frame, so she quietly slipped into a bush of roses to cover up her scent. knowing it would work, the vampires walked straight passed her. She peeked out and when she thought the coast was clear she quickly sprinted to the nearest busy street. They wouldn’t dare come here. “Outsmarted another stupid vampire, don’t get me wrong I ain’t that intelligent” she thought to herself as she walked down 5th street, New York.

As soon as Sky got a cab she raced home, only to find that all the lights in her face-bricked four-bedroom house, were off. “Did everyone fall asleep already, that’s funny, normally they stay up to yell at me?” she thought as she made her way to the stairs to her room. She had one foot onto the first step when the lights came on. “Who am I kidding in my family, no one sleeps”

There was Sky’s mom, Elana. She had brown hair much like Sky but bright brown eyes. She was sitting on the floral couch glaring at her. Her dad, Jake, who used to have dirty blond hair, but was now greying had his soft brown eyes glued to the wall across from him. Jake sitting on the other side of the floral couch always had a soft spot for Sky and could never be angry with her but today there was something in his eyes that said otherwise. She gave a small nod towards them and then braced herself for the lecture that she was going to get. Sky’s older brother, Octavis, sat on the top step with a sad look in his eyes, watching as his parents screamed at his reckless and courageous sister.

Sky tried her damn hardest to make it believable, that she was only late because she couldn’t get a cab, but her parents suspected something else. They were always suspicious of her. They had the right to be. Sky’s parents had no clue that their daughter is constantly a target for hot, sexy and dark-haired vampires. Sky really didn’t want her parents worrying about her even more. Octavis was the only one of her family members that actually knew as he was always getting her out of trouble. He’d always be at the right place at the exact right time.

2 hours later

Sky plonked herself onto her fluffy warm bed that faced her large window seat. She normally stared up at her skylight and would just admire the stars, but it was cloudy today and it felt like a storm was brewing. “Why can’t I be normal” she sighed. Slowly she fell asleep exhausted from the day’s work of avoiding vampires.

Somewhere in New York, a storm was brewing. He stood alone at the bar, his usual emerald green eyes a shade darker. He was hungry. He scanned the mass of drunk and sweaty people, looking for his dinner.

He stopped on a dark-haired Indian girl, she seemed to be enjoying the beat of the music. Her lushes curves showing through her tight red lace dress. She had slender caramel legs that were accentuated by the black wedges she had on. The dark man set his sights on her, licking his lips, hungrily. In an instant she felt the man's stare on her, she seductively made her way to him, never breaking eye contact. She wrapped her arms around his neck. He dipped his nose into the crook of her neck and inhaled. The delicious scent filled his nose, and now his eyes were not green anymore but a bright blood- red.

The man knew exactly what he was going to do to her that night, and it wasn't what she had in mind.
