Chapter 1
This is a story of how my life will never be the same. Before any of that though, we must explore how my life was normal at one time and work from there. So, strap in, get ready and grab some popcorn because this is one hell of a story.
I just got home from school and decided I need to go outside for a little bit before eve attempting to do my homework. “MOM!” I call though the house while looking for her. I eventually find her in her study, not much of a surprise. “Mom, I’m going out for a while, I’ll be back before dad gets home okay?”
“Yeah, that’s fine honey have fun, love you” she says hardly looking up from her computer. I know how hard she’s been working lately so I don’t say anything and leave the room. I walk downstairs grabbing a light coat to keep off the brisk, fall air and go out the back. Once I get to the gate in my backyard that leads to the woods I pause for a second just to look at everything and take it all in.
Once I get back on task I open the gate and walk in. I just relax in the cool calm air of the forest. There is nothing more peaceful in the world in my opinion. Taking in all the trees and chirping of the birds and tussling of squirrels in the trees I pick a comfy looking place and sit down and just breathe the fresh cool air in.
After a few minutes I take out the book I brought with me and start reading it, pausing occasionally, to just look around and think about how lucky I am to live this close to the woods. I read a few more chapters before I hear a scurrying a little bit to my side. I slowly place down my book and look towards the noise. When I spot what the little noisy creature is I see that is a little wolf pup.
The first thing I want to do is go up and cuddle the fuzzy looking pup, but I know that it’s mother or pack could be near and that wouldn’t be smart, so I stay where I am and just watch the pup wander. Longer I watch the more worried I get. Shouldn’t one of the pup’s pack come to get it by now? I get up to see if I can maybe see the pack anywhere around here or find the den to get the pup back to it.
As I stand up I hear a low whimper. I freeze. Then I hear it again, it sounds like a wolf. I very slowly creep towards the sound. I stay cautious as I spot a wolf laying on its side. I stop a few yards away from the wolf and look it over. The first thing I notice is the gaping hole right behind its front shoulder. Poor thing was the victim of some poachers. I know better than to approach it due to it still being a wild animal and that it will most likely attack me in its despair.
Suddenly I feel something dart past me towards the wolf, I look down to see the pup from earlier run to the wolf. It looks at me for a few seconds before it yips at me. When it sees I have no clue what it wants it comes over to me and bits my pant leg trying to pull me towards the wolf. After he quickly realizes that he can’t move me he sits down and whimpers while giving me the puppy dog eyes I can’t resist.
I slowly advance to the wolf with extreme awareness of the potentially very dangerous animal that I’m willingly walking towards. Once I’m close enough to touch it I very slowly sit down and try to seem the least threatening as possible. Soon as I sit the pup comes up to me and sits on me.
I instantly stiffen and nearly stop breathing from the sudden movement from the pup. He eventually lays down on me as almost appears to fall asleep. I look towards the grown wolf, amazed it’s still alive. I can hardly tell the color of its fur under all the blood at this point. She looks at me and appears eerily calm. We look at each other for a few seconds the she looks at the pup, then me and back to the pup. “You want me to take care of him?” I ask. I swear I think I’m losing it because I see her nod to me before taking a final breath.
I look at the wolf pup on my lap only to see it looking at me already. I slowly reach towards him and stroke his soft silver and black fur. He seems to calm down even more and rests his head back on my legs. I let him sit there for a little while longer before I say, “well I guess your mine now huh bud?” he looks up at me. “yeah, thought so. Let’s get going boy, we need to get home.” I gently pick him up and start the walk home.
