Her
Lee (Y/N) scowled darkly at her soup, ignoring the worried gazed of her four friends that came her way.
“Um... (Y/N), sweetheart?” Kim Jisoo, a dark-haired and motherly senior, ventured. (Y/N) looked up at her, still scowling blackly, and Jisoo forced herself not to be too intimidated.
Jesus, this girl’s glares are terrifying.
“What.” (Y/N) sulkily started stirring the sour-smelling kimchi jjigae, her spoon clinking against the bowl.
Jisoo went silent. (Y/N) definitely was not in a good mood.
“(Y/N),” another voice piped up, this one belonging to Jennie Kim, the transfer student of a junior who hailed from New Zealand. (Y/N) turned her glare on Jennie who, being the cowardly girl she was, immediately fell quiet.
Park Chaeyoung, a sweet sophomore from Melbourne, Australia with dark dyed red waves, stayed quiet. Chaeyoung, otherwise known as Roseanne or just Rose, had known the maknae of their friend group long longest, having met in her in high school where they’d joined the same club and being the one to introduce (Y/N) to the rest in the first place, and had learned long ago that when the (H/C) haired girl was in a bad mood, it was best to shut up.
Which left Manoban Lalisa, or Lisa for short, the round-eyed Thai transfer student whose name had greatly confused the school’s population before Jennie had suggested she shorten it. The sophomore girl looked around the table at her unnies and sighed, setting down her chopsticks and placing her food on the bench next to her where she knew it wouldn’t be sent flying.
“(Y/N) ah, ” she said sweetly, sweeping a hand through her stick-straight, dyed platinum blonde hair, attracting stares from the majority of the male population as her tresses settled over her forehead and just above her shoulders. (Y/N) turned her gaze on her friend, and her eyes instantly honed in on Lisa, her scowl deepening.
Chaeyoung noticed, and located the exact spot where (Y/N) was focused on.
“Oh,” she made a small sound of realization as she realized what the younger girl had been staring at, smiling knowingly at her. “So that’s it.”
(Y/N) switched her gaze to over to the smiling girl, before going back to her soup, muttering darkly.
The other three looked at Chaeyoung curiously who just tapped a spot on her wrist. Realization dawned on the other three girls and they looked back youngest of them all, wearing identical knowing smiles. “(Y/N)?”
(Y/N) peeked up at them, and sighed.
“Fine,” she said, pointing her spoon, which had previously been in her mouth, in her friends’ general direction. “You got me. Yes, my soulmate timer changed again, and I’m still salty."
Jennie and Lisa’s smiles changed into smirks and they turned their hands to show (Y/N) the insides of their wrists just to bug her.
Kunpimook Bhuwakul, Lisa’s read in Thai, the only Thai (Y/N) could read, having seen that name every day. Lisa had met her soulmate last year, a handsome boy who everyone called Bam Bam who was her age. He was sweet and funny, and all the girls were good friends with him.
Kim Namjoon, small neat, characters spelled out on Jennie’s in Korean. Namjoon, also known as RM, attended their university. Jennie had bumped into him on her very first day. Namjoon had since graduated, and Jennie visited his apartment often. (Y/N) had only met him once or twice, and he was tall and handsome, exactly Jennie’s type. He was also very smart and had two cute dimples in his cheeks when he smiled, and treated Jennie like a queen.
Both made their soulmates extremely happy, and vice versa.
Jisoo and Chaeyoung shook their heads at the two’s antics, their wrists decorated with a row of small, ever-changing numbers, always getting smaller and smaller.
(Y/N) looked downright murderous, poised to throw her saliva-coated spoon at the two smirking girls. “Why you-”
“Language,” Jisoo chided, plucking the spoon out of her hand just to be safe, and the now weaponless sophomore ( she was just a few months younger than Lisa ) stared back at her meal, releasing a string of colourful curses aimed at both the foreign transfer students under her breath. Jisoo chose to ignore this, storing the spoon safely on Chaeyoung’s plate.
Chaeyoung chuckled.
“Ne, (Y/N) ah,” she said, propping her chin on her hand and looking at the girl with amusement dancing in her eyes, “Come on, tell us, what does your timer read today?”
(Y/N) looked around her at the girls’ expectant faces and the other students who were no doubt trying to eavesdrop on the conversation of the prettiest ( and most popular ) girls in the school.
She sighed again, defeated, and dropped her head into her arms, soup long forgotten and pushed aside.
I wish my soulmate would come walking right up to me, all tall and handsome and perfect... well, to me, anyways.
“Sixteen centuries,” she mumbled, looking at her wrist to make sure that was correct.
“Wait, no,” she said, seeing that it had changed yet again, to the value it somehow always returned to after she made that wish, before it would jump to some bizarre number again.
“Thirty seconds,” she said dully, and watched as it counted down. As always, just before it reached zero, it jumped again, this time to ten years.
“I swear, this thing is broken,” she complained, burying her head in the fluffy comfort of her sweater-covered arms.
“(Y/N),” Jennie discreetly moved some of the girl’s hair away from her bowl of soup, where the (H/C) locks had been dangerously close to getting soaked in kimchi jjigae, “There’s no such thing.”
“Yeah,” Lisa, who sat across from her, patted her back. “Jennie’s right. For once.”
Jennie started whining and Lisa continued insulting her, Jisoo laughing quietly.
“I bet mine’s the first ever broken timer then,” (Y/N) insisted, “I’m telling you, it’s spoilt. And I think my soulmate, whoever he is, would agree.”
Chaeyoung’s gentle voice spoke up.
“Well,” she said, smiling softly at the dejected girl. “At least one thing’s for sure.”
“What?” (Y/N) asked, curious.
Chaeyoung’s smile widened.
“Your soulmate really is going to be special, (Y/N).”
How right she was.
