"Must you grow up so fast?" My mother pleaded.

"Mom, we have been over this. I am gonna come home on weekends, and we will have dinner at my place once a month. I know it will take some adjusting but, I'll only be a short 45-minute drive away." I explained with a sincere smile.

"I know Sophie, but you are fresh outta high school. Don't you think you are rushing into things. I mean come on, stop and smell the roses for a bit. I barely ever saw you the past three years, you went from the center, to school, to the center, and didn't get home till late."

My mom was right. But, I'm growing up.

I have always believed in setting a goal and sticking to it, and that is what I did. I have been working my butt off for three years at the Tech Center Nursing Program at my high school. My mom knows this struggle, and she still guilt trips me.

"I'm sorry mom. But, I'm just trying to get what I've worked so hard for. And I think that moving toward the city and getting this intern job will get me where I want to be," I defended.

"I know, and I'm very proud of you for that. I just hope you aren't biting off more than you can chew. If you ever feel it is all just too much, me and this house are always around. I mean you are 17 afterall."

"C'mon mom, you know I turn 18 in a week." I let out with a chuckle.

"Yeah, yeah. My little girl is all grown up," she said with tears springing to the corner of her eyes. Causing me to bring her into an embrace.

"Okay mom, I have to get going. The moving truck is probably arriving at my apartment now." I stated releasing her.

"Okay sweetie. Drive safe, I love you." She called after me, as I walked to my 'lil old Jeep Cherokee' as I liked to call it.

As I began to drive through the city, I looked around at passing shops and coffee joints, trying to keep them in mind. 21st street has a Starbucks, remember that for early monday mornings.

I pulled up to my apartment building in the afternoon, the movers were already there unloading my belongings and furniture I had collected throughout the past few months. I followed one mover in and began to head up to my fifth floor loft.

When I walked in I was immediately relieved. The loft had actually looked like the pictures. Nice sized kitchen, reasonable living space, snug dining set, and roomy master bedroom.

I could definitely call this home. About an hour later the two movers had finished their job and I proceeded in paying them, with a fair tip for not breaking anything. I finished the night unpacking some essentials in my bedroom, and bathroom. In a week I'd hoped to be unpacked completely, and by two I'd be starting my new intern position. And following, in a few months I'd start nursing classes at Clemson University on a scholarship.

I could hardly wait.
