The Meet
“God!! Nandini, are you ready yet? They have arrived.” My mom yelled, entering the room.
“Yes, mom,” I replied. “Chalo jaldi.” She said and began pulling me by my arm.
We reached down and I found a lady and two men sitting on the sofa.
“Look, here comes Nandini.” My dad said and I sat beside him and found my grandma glaring at me. Shit! I wasn’t supposed to sit. I stood up abruptly before looking at her confused. She pointed her eyes at the feet of the lady. What? Ohh yeah, I needed their blessing. This is so embarrassing! How could I sit down like this?!
I found a pair of eyes looking at me with amusement. I took their blessings and looked at my grandma as if asking for permission to sit. She nodded. Phew...
“I think we should let the children speak privately, after all, they’ll be deciding if they have to marry.” The lady which I took for the guy’s mom spoke. My grandma smiled “uhh. Yeah of course. Nandini bring him to our garden beta.” I found my jaw touching the floor. She agreed, just like that? Wow!
I stood up and started walking out hoping he’d follow me. I looked back, just in case he wasn’t but found him busy on his phone while walking. I guess he didn’t see the pole because the very next movement he banged his head on it. “Shit!” He cursed and I started laughing. As if sensing my presence he looked above and glared at me. I coughed hiding my laughter. He clenched his jaw and soon walked faster, I turned and we were finally in the garden.
He sat on the bench and was busy on his phone again. I sat in front of him waiting for him to say something. After what seemed like hours, he finally locked his phone and glanced at me. I cleared my throat.
“So..?” I trailed. “So what?” He asked. He’s so annoying and rude and jerk and what not.
“You don’t want to marry me?” I questioned more as stated. He kept silence, taking it as a yes I continued.
“I don’t want to marry you and I don’t think you want to marry me. Right?”
He didn’t reply. He was just staring at me intensely.
“So we should go inside and tell everyone that, we don’t like each other. Don’t you think?” I asked, hoping that he’ll go and tell everyone he doesn’t want to marry me. I glanced at him hopefully.
“umm... I guess I want to marry you. You know, we’ll not even bother each other. You’ll live your life and I’ll live mine.” He said smirking.
“What?!” I cried.
“Ohh yeah and I don’t think your parents would want to have it any other way around.” He said.
“But-” he cut me off. “Look I won’t bother you after marriage. We sure are going to live under one roof but we won’t be living as practical husband and wife.” He stated.
“Are you out of your mind?” I asked standing up with a jerk.
He laughed “you are funny, I’ll for sure be entertained.”
I gaped. “You are marrying me for entertainment? You stupid egoistic jerk.” I said my voice already raising.
“Mind your language.” He warned me and started walking inside.
Shit! What have I gotten myself into?
I followed him running. He stood their acting shy, his eyes on the ground. What an actor! And then looked at his mother and nodded smiling innocently. She smiled and stood up to hug him and then walked towards me and hugged me.
“Congratulations Nandini, I’ve never been so happy. Everyone started congratulating and hugging both of us. Believe me, my family has never been this overwhelming.
I looked at the jerk to find he was already smirking at me. Way to go!
“Mom, I need to talk to her.” He said acting all shy and all. Everyone laughed and his mom nodded. He came towards me and started pulling me holding my wrist. As soon as we were out I yanked it out of his hold and he started laughing like there’s no tomorrow. I glared at him.
“What the hell was that?!!” I shouted.
“What happened my soon-to-be-wife?” He asked chuckling. He’s so dead.
“Why would you fo that?” I asked and I guess he noticed my seriousness as he stopped laughing.
“I am marrying you and that’s final.” He said in a strict tone.
“Not happening I’ll convince my family. This not at all going to happen.” I said.
“Well, best of luck with that I’ll be waiting for rejection.” He said and turned to walk away.
“Wait at least tell me your name!” I yelled but he was already gone.
