I was walking into my school for the last time. I was finally getting out of this hellhole known as "school" I silently walked over to my locker and turned in the combination.
Five over here, thirty-six this way, and twelve over here. I heard a faint click and I swung open my locker. I tried to look as casual as possible, but I couldn't help but smile. I was finally free!
"Hi!!" Someone said behind me cheerfully. I turned around and saw my friend, Sage bouncing around excitedly. "Hey," I said as I turned around. I proceeded to pile stuff into my book bag that I would need throughout the day.
"Hey Ivy?" Sage asked. "Yeah?" I questioned as I zipped up my book bag. "We're still gonna stay in contact with each other once school ends. Right?" She asked.
"Of course," I said, "Why wouldn't we?" "No reason. Just I've heard stories about how people are the best of friends and just completely split up and never talk again for no reason at all." She explained. "Well, there's your reason." I smarted off.
I always heard those stories too when I was young. They were always so sad and nobody noticed either. they were always about how somebody had this super tight group of friends. And then high school ended. And they never spoke to each other again and completely forgot about each other.
They weren't even interesting because they all had the same plot line and they all ended the same way.
But now I just had to get through the school day. But I figured all the classes would be the same. Sit there, get handed back papers and tests, and say our goodbyes. I know at least one person in each class who's going to be really dramatic over the "saying your goodbyes" part.
"Hey Ivy?" Sage asked. She could get a little annoying with these questions sometimes. But other than that she was nice to be around. Plus she was my only friend, so I kept her around. "What, Sage?" I responded.
"You want to get together tonight. Just hang out at your place?" She asked. "How about your place instead of mine." I negotiated. "oh no," she said. "What happened this time?" "It's a yes or no question," I said, trying to avoid telling her.
"Yes." She said.
I smiled at her as the bell rang. Time to go to class. I swung my book bag over my right shoulder and headed off to class.
All of my classes were the same. Just as I had predicted. I didn't get handed back as many things as I thought I would. Only three to five papers per class. And usually, I got handed somewhere around ten to twenty papers per class. Then everybody said their goodbyes. Goodbyes to their friends who they didn't have any more classes with and their favorite teachers. Girls said goodbyes to their boyfriends, and boys said goodbyes to their girlfriends. Knowing that they'd end up calling that night for hours on end.
I just found it kind of stupid. If you're such close friends with them, then why are you saying goodbye? If they're your best friend you should have their number. I didn't say goodbye to anybody. I never do at the end of the school year. Not since I was in fifth grade.
The school day went faster than expected. I was already in my last class. But for me, it felt like a regular school day.
The bell rang, dismissing the whole school for the summer. I hoped that this would be the final time I heard that bell. It gets annoying after a while.
I walked to the front doors of the school, where sage was waiting. We always waited at the front doors for the each other. Then walked home together. Which worked out great since our houses are on the same road.
"Let's go." She said as I approached her. "That's what I planned on doing," I replied. "You always have some smart-ass remark, don't you?" She laughed. "Yup," I said.
We made our way from the schools front door to the sidewalk. Once we got to the sidewalk we started talking. Like it was some sort of habit.
"How was your day?" Sage asked. "Fourth period was emotional for Maranda." I joked. "OMG! She was totally fake crying." Sage exclaimed. "She was!" I replied. Sage and I had fourth period together. We both started to laugh.
"Hey! Short stack! Barbie!" A guy from behind us yelled, "Wait up!" behind us were Chad and Jack. "Just keep walking," Sage whispered. We both kind of picked up speed and heard the sound of Jack and Chad running up to us.
Chad yanked my bookbag off my shoulder by the zipper. Causing it to open and everything to spill out of it.
Papers, folders, pencils, and multiple packs of gum scattered the sidewalk. Jack was over there tormenting Sage. While Chad was picking through my stuff on the ground, stealing all the gum.
I bent down to start picking things up. Chad grabbed all my folders. "What are you doing, Chad?!!" I yelled. "Calm down, short stack." He said. "Give them back," I demanded as I tried to grab them.
He put them all in one even pile. He flipped them upside down and started to shake them, causing more papers to scatter the ground.
"Jack, let's go," Chad said. Chad and Jack continued walking and acted as if nothing ever happened.
I turned to look at Sage. Her stuff was all over the ground as well. "Hey!" Someone said. They jogged over. Turns out, it was two guys.
They both started to help pick things up. "Thanks," I said. "Sure thing," the one helping me responded. We all continued to pick things up for a little longer. "I'm Ivy," I said, trying to make conversation. "Liam," He stated.
"Well, Liam. Thank you." I thanked. "What else was I supposed to do? Just rudely walk by you and do nothing?" He joked. "That's a really good point." I agreed.
We shoved the last of the folders in my bookbag and stood up. The person helping Sage stood up as she zipped up her bookbag. She stood up and said, "Thank you, Sam." "Sure thing," Sam replied.
Sage and I swung our bookbags over our shoulders as Liam and Sam walked off. We let them walk for a little longer until we started walking again. Just because we didn't want it to seem like we were following them.
We walked down the sidewalk silently for fifteen minutes until we were at her house. "I'll be back over after I drop my stuff off at my house," I explained. she simply nodded her head and walked inside, shutting the door behind her.
I walked down the sidewalk, now alone. My house was only seven houses away from Sage's house. so there's that.
Once I got to my place, I walked inside and set my bookbag down. I went to the bathroom and grabbed a bottle of water. Surprisingly, nobody was home. I decided to leave a note. It's the least I can do.
I'm at Sage's house. I'm only staying until dinner.

"That should be good," I said to myself.
I walked outside and made sure the door locked behind me. I started to walk down the sidewalk to Sage's house.
