Chapter 1
My heart began beating at an inhuman rate as the alarm clock scared me awake. “Who invented alarm clocks?” I threw the piece of metal and plastic onto the ground, only to realize that I will have to buy a new one sooner or later. I quickly grabbed my phone and ran to the bathroom, I can’t use my phone as an alarm because I would probably throw it across the room. I looked through my closet and grabbed my favorite outfit; you have to wear the outfit that most defines you on your first day at a new school in the middle of the year.
My outfit consisted of a pair of black high-waisted skinny jeans, a white crop top, and a black leather jacket. “Riot Rose McKinly!” Yelled my mother as she stomped up the stairs, I quickly get cleaned as my mother pounds on the door.
“What is your problem?” I opened the door to my my mother, steam practically flowing out of her ears.
“Hurry up,” she snapped and walked away. Who peed in her cheerios?
After dressing I stuff all of my school supplies into my bag and sneak my way out of the house along with my older and younger brothers. “Alright who turned mom into godzilla today?” I glared at both of them and raised an eyebrow.
“Wasn’t me she woke me up like that,” said Lark my younger brother.
“Wasn’t me, I didn’t even talk to her.” Silently we all came to the same conclusion, mom and step-dad were arguing again. We piled into the car that Kamden (older brother) had gotten for his sixteenth birthday four months before our dad passed in Afghanistan. That was about a year ago, now he is seventeen, Lark is twelve, and I’m fifteen. After the fifteen minute drive we arrive in front of the large five story school, I looked up in anticipation, getting lost will make up a large portion of today.
“We all go to the same school?” Asked Lark, he looked at me for the answer knowing not to trust Kamden.
“No, you go over there.” I pointed to the building across the street and he nodded in comprehension and jumped out of the car and walked across the unused street.
“This is going to be a long day, “ I say to Kam and we walk through the large front doors. Before we are even close to the office we are bombarded with people of all sorts. “What is happening?”
“No idea,” replied Kamden as I hid behind his back.
“Hi my name’s Cassandra, but everyone calls me Cassie.” A very perky redhead asked and pushed her hand towards Kam to shake, and he very politely shook it.
“Kamden,” he said towards her and I saw almost all of the girls practically melt. What can I say? Girls tend to think my brother’s hot, I don’t get it but that’s the popular opinion. “And this is my little sister Riot,” he introduced me and allowed everyone to see me.
“Uhh, hey?” I looked around and spotted a group of girls standing next to the lockers, they seem chill.
“Can I show you to you’re next class and locker?” Asked a random chick with black hair.
“Actually I think I’ll find my own way around.” I edged away from her before quickly adding, “it’s the only way I’ll remember the directions.” She didn’t seem to mind as she went back to obsessing over my brother with the other girls. I walked over to the group of girls, “umm hey?”
One looked up at me and smiled kindly, “hi.”
“I was wondering if you one of you guys could help me find all my stuff?”
“Why didn’t you accept Millie’s offer?” Asked one, she had black hair with some highlights of a lighter brown.
“She’s obviously not a people person,” commented the one with brown hair.
“Sorry; I’m Opel and these are my sisters Nadya and Haven.” Opel had golden blonde hair and deep protruding blue eyes, Nadya had black hair and brown highlights along with caramel brown eyes, Opel’s hair was a light brown fading into a warm blonde with brown eyes surrounded by a ring of grey.
“I’m Riot,” I tried to give them a friendly smile. My curly brown hair with blonde highlights ran down to my waist and my eyes changed colors, today they were a bluish grey.
“Can I see your schedule?” Opel asked and held out her hand waiting for me to hand the sheet of paper to her, I set the green sheet on top of her palm and she quickly scanned the letters and numbers.

“Wow,” said Opal after reading my classes out loud to the other girls. “I have 1st, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th with you,” Opal said and handed the paper to Nadya.
“We have 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 7th with you.” she said handing the paper to Haven.
“We have 5th, 7th, 8th, and 10th with you.” She handed the paper back to me, “ so the only classes you have without one of us are 3rd and 9th.” I smiled and they showed me to my locker, which was conveniently placed right next to theirs.
“C’mon let’s start heading to class,” Opal said and grabbed my hand. I flinched slightly but allowed her to drag me around like a rag doll, we entered the room and sat in the back of the class. We got to know each other, surprisingly she was easy to talk to; but I didn’t tell her my whole life story, just miniscule things like favorite colors and stuff. My mind was fully focused until my gaze met with another pair of crystal blue orbs…
